Oh my Heck! Let me sell you on a life saving device. Four weeks ago I went deer hunting here in Utah with a friend of mine, his dad, and another guy. Well, everyone filled their tags, with the exception of yours truly, on the opening weekend. Needless to say, my friends ditched me and I had to call another friend who doesn't hunt to come with me on Monday. We went and to make a long story short, got my deer just about dark, but ended up about 4 miles from our truck in the mountains with a snowstorm starting. We started for the truck with my deer. Five long hours later....LOST in the snowstorm. We ended up finding the truck but spending the night in it waiting for the storm to pass and didn't get home until about 830 the next morning. What does this have to do with the Magellan SporTrak, you ask?
Well, money is tight for my wife and I and our three kids, and my wife hates when I say, 'Hun, I need this little thing to use for hunting,' to which she replies, 'How much is it?' Anything over about $10 and she goes nuts. Well, even after worrying all night that her husband was dead in the mountains and that I wouldn't be found until Spring, it was still hard for me to convince her to let me purchase a GPS for hunting. I looked on SEVERAL websites, magazines, and stores for the best one for the price, and eventually decided that the Magellan SporTrak Pro was the one for me. Here at Vanns.com, I would even save about $50 over the next best price, and that even came with no tax and free shipping. Now, to convince the wife. I somehow was able to get this done and proudly went online to place my order. When I clicked on 'add to basket' for my SporTrak Pro, a window popped up and said something to the effect of 'someone returned a brand new SporTrak Pro and you can buy it even cheaper now...' or something like that. Well, the price ended up being about $150 dollars less than some other websites and now I was really getting excited!! Can you say 'I have a very happy wife!' I ordered it, and lo and behold it came within 3-4 business days!! It came with a full warranty, and I honestly couldn't even tell that it had been opened, if it ever was.
The test. I started using it, trying to get used to how it works and decided to put it to the test and go hunting, since I also had a cow elk tag. Well, I immediately marked the position of the truck and off we went. As is my luck, we were tracking a herd of elk and lost track of time and our position. Now it's dark again, and thanks to being in the mountains of Utah, it's also snowing. This time, it pull out my awesome, new, affordable Magellan SporTrak Pro Thanks to Vanns.com and walk to 3.4 miles back to the truck and arrived home to my wife and kids before 900 PM as promised. I didn't get my cow elk, but I got home safe and sound without sleeping overnight in the mountains in my truck! It was a much better experience even without shooting anything....just ask my wife. I love my new Magellan SporTrak Pro! It is very easy to use and figure out. I'm not much of a 'techy', but like I said, it only took a couple of hours to play with and figure out how to use it. I even downloaded a topographic map of the area we hunted for the elk onto my SporTrak Pro with some software I purchased! Thank you Vanns for helping me get to go hunting again, and the peace of mind my wife has now when I go.
Awesome detail and reception!

I've only had the sportrak pro for several weeks, but during that time i've taken it backpacking several times, as well as navigating on the road. All I can say is that the unit works great! I've always been able to get a position fix...even at the bottom of a rugged gorge where I was camping. It picks up under heavy tree cover, too.
I also uploaded maps from Mapsend Topo Usa, so now I've got great detail wherever I go. The vertical profile utility works great...it lets you know how much farther you have to hike uphill!
All in all, a great value for the money...I'm not disappointed in the performance.

I live five miles from the Garmin world HQ and have several friends working there. That is probably why it took so long to decide. In this area Garmin is considered the best and they are good, however, I learned from asking many question from many backpackers and backcountry hunters (three actually had one) that getting a signal is kind of important and the SportTrak Pro has a quad helix antenna something the closest Garmin (eTrex Vista) does not.
I fish/hunt and mountain bike and although it will be used hunting and biking I really like it fishing. With the proximity alarms you can get right on top of the hot spots. With Magellan’s Topo software the SportTrak Pro can hold detailed regions of the size of Minnesota including all of the lakes we frequent, even the little puddle. Along with Minnesota it holds the KC metro area and most of the Ozark lakes.
To get the same thing (memory, antenna, alarms, etc…) in the Garmin line you would have to get the 76S and end up paying close to $500 when you can get the same thing in the SportTrak Pro.
It is an awesome little unit. For an all around compact unit this is the unit I would recommend.

I initially had a Garmin Venture. I had a recurring problem that would turn off the gps when the tracking feature was on, making that feature self defeating. I contacted Garmin, and found out that the unit I had purchased new had had 4 software updates that had not been updated, one of them affecting the tracking feature. I could have downloded the updates, but in doing so, it would have wiped out all of my recorded waypoints. They offered to do it at the factory, so I sent it in. Got back a replacement that had a defective click stick, wouldn't download data, and still had the tracking problem. Then went out with a friend who had a Magellan sporttrak pro, and compared reception. In several areas, when I could not get a satellite, she was getting two to three. In addition, the Sporttrak Pro has a larger screen and graphics, and is much easier to read. Sporttrack has a $50 rebate till June 30th, making the price close enough to the Venture to go in that direction, which I did. The Sportrack Pro is far superior, and worth the extra cash.

I had never seen, let alone used, a GPS unit before receiving my Magellan SporTrak, although I am very familiar with GIS and the terms used for location and direction. From a hardware standpoint, the unit is top notch. It is solidly built, the buttons are convenient to use and well labeled and organized. Also, the screen is easy to read, despite its size, and the backlight helps in low light situations.
I found navigating through the various menus and screens a bit daunting at first. The manual is OK at best. One of the screens is not even mentioned in the manual, and the organization of the manual (which has no index!) is wanting. Still, after a few days of experimenting and reading, I mastered the unit and its software. I am almost never without my SporTrak, having taken it on a bicycle ride last weekend, whenever I hike, and even using it in my car.
All in all, I just love this little GPS receiver. Now all I have to do is get the street maps and the car adaptor and I'll never get lost again.

I did a lot of research on the handheld GPS's before I bought one. The sportrak suited my needs best. It is very user freindly, fits your hands just right and very accurate. Don't let the size fool you. This little package is stuffed with information to get you where you want to be. The zoom will get you right down to ground level, or up so you can see a great distance. I could have gotton by with a less expencive unit, but I wanted to be able to download topo maps. If all you are looking for is finding you way, not getting lost on the water, or in the woods, then I would go with a less expencive unit and save some $$.

The Megellan Sport trak PRo is a pretty user friendly device. It is loaded with extra features which really make it a pleasure to use. If these features don't interest you, I would definitely get a lower model, and save some $$$. I purchased mine for mostly use with driving directions as I am always getting lost. The unit itself is easy to use, but the mapping software (MapSend) isn't so easy! I'm still working on directions, all I've figured out is downloading entire grids of streets or states and than driving utilizing that. I haven't messed with it too long, so I need time, but I'm heading three states north tonight, so I hope it helps me! Weight and size are great as well!

This model GPS is just incredible. It's easy to use even for directionally challenged people like myself! It's kind of cool when the satellites lock on and it takes you right down to street level. It feels like some sort of sci-fi movie thing going on. I ordered it on a Monday and it was there by Wednesday. Plenty of time to get used to it for the fishing trip I had planned for the weekend. It has a fishing probabilty clock installed, so I didn't have to waste all my time sitting in a boat doing nothing but drowning worms. I highly reccomend this model GPS. It does its job and it's easy to use.

Being slightly long of tooth, 67, I was concerned that I would not be able to figure out how to use a gps for navigating the fishing lakes in the BWCA. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of programming and uploading the Mapsend Topo data. I do wish you could upload more than one Region at a time. I'm not sure any of the available gps's can do that, but it would be nice to have my home region AND the BWCA region.
The screen is small but adiquate. The zoom feature makes moving around the region easy and quick. Marking waypoints is a breeze. In general, a good addition to my fishing, hiking, and camping equipment.

I didn't realy know a lot about gps's untill I purchased the magellan sportrak pro. As a firefighter in a rural and heavly wooded area I needed a gps that would give accurate coordinates for dispatching choppers to accident sites. The sportrak pro is quick to lock in with the correct information, not like some of the other gps's that other people here own they take as long as three to five minuets to give coordinates and sometimes you have to move to get them. Maby because of trees or whatever but the sportrak pro will work even the thickest of foilage usually in about 45 seconds to 1 min. The mapping and goto feature is realy nice in doing searches both in the woods and on water aswell as in the car on trips. I really dont know what else I can say about the Magellan Sportrak Pro exept anyone that moves about outdoors should own one of these, and I don't know why I waited so long to purchase one but with all the mapping features and the many maps that you can download into this gps I won't ever be without one again. Thanks for such a great product Magellan.

This unit worked great for the first year or so...though it didn't get much use.
Then it started locking up...just after the warranty expired of course. It has happen 3 times and now I have a very expensive paper weight!
The first time it locked up was because of an incomplete download of the MapSend software. I had been throught the process before, but for some reason while loading an update the unit locked up.
So after trying numerous times to get help from Magellan via telephone and email and finally getting a response that was no help at all, I had to sent the unit back to them for repair. It cost me $15 each way for shipping and Magellan charged me $95 to fix it.
Once it finally got sent back about a month later the unit worked for a few more weeks and then one day when I turned it on it went into eternal restart mode over and over again and finally locked up on the start screen. The only way to turn it off was to remove the battery pack. So, once again I had to pay for the shipping each way and the repair charge of $95 and wait.
Then, once again the unit failed the same way it did previously. So, now I have a $500 paper weight because of the initial $250 purchase price and cost of sending and repairing the unit twice.
Bottom line is DON'T BUY IT!
