| My new 50 inch Samsung lives up to all its promises. It is superior to the 60 inch Sony it replaces in several areas. The most important is the sharpness and clarity of the LED picture. I am also impressed with the shallow depth of this rear projector TV and with the large number of outputs conveniently placed on one side. The number of controls to the picture and sound are also impressive, as is the light weight. This set gets my highest rating. I would also like to commend the delivery company, Yellow Transportation, for the excellent service they provided. |

I purchased this television through Vanns. Great price, 2099 with FREE DVD recorder. The Samsung is replacing my trusty Pioneer 533HD5. Which was rather large compared to the new DLPs. I chose the Samsung for the size and looks. I did run around to a few brick and mortar stores to get a look at the picture.
The stores I went to did not carry the 5089s, I only came across the 5087s. I was happy with what I have seen in the stores. Considering they did come off a split signal between all the other sets. Great picture overall. Very bright. Great color. HD is outstanding. One thing I think my Pioneer has over this Samsung is converting standard 43 to widescreen. I havent come across a television yet that really does it as well. All in all that can be forgiven.
The LED light source is the main reason I purchased this television. I have been holding off for quite a while. I didnt want to have to replace a bulb every year, if not less than a year. And a color wheel spinning at 14000 RPM sounds like a possible repair in the future.
I have not had any issues with this set yet. Only owned it for about a month now. Given that happy so far.

| We just received our Samsung 5089S and couldnt be happier. We have a standard sized living room that is fairly well lit windows, etc and the picture quality is great in the room. The HD broadcasts look wonderful. The product arrived within days of our order and the TV was easy to hookup. |

First I have to say that until a few days ago I didnt even know about Vanns until I went searching for the hard to find Samsung HLT5089S, the ONLY 50 DLP that Samsung lists as having HDMI 1.3 inputs.
Vanns had Free Shipping, No Tax and the best price I could find anywhere.
Its a little scary to make such a large purchase from a website you never heard of, but the fact that they even had this set in stock, coupled with the free shipping and no tax made it too hard not to take a chance.
Vanns, YOU ARE AMAZINGLY EFFICIENT -- When I made this purchase on Apr 2, 2008 at 21748 AM PDT, the shopping cart estimated delivery for Wednesday, April 9, 2008. Of course, I got an immediate confirmation by e-mail which most online stores do.
First thing in the morning at 838 AM Vanns sent an e-mail that the order was approved, and just 10 minutes later another e-mail came, informing me that the order was sent to their shipping department. At 119 PM I got an e-mail with a tracking number saying that it had been shipped.
A few hours later, the trucking companys website said it was scheduled for delivery on Friday, April 4, 2008. Could this actually be true? Well, on the morning of April 4th the trucking company called to confirm delivery for that afternoon.
WE GOT IT 5 DAYS EARLIER THAN THE EXPECTED DELIVERY DATE!!! WOW!!! Vanns, youve got a new customer for life!
Now on to this fabulous HDTV... I had to take a 2 hour break after the last paragraph because this TV is so awesome I couldnt stay away from it!
Brilliant, is the best one word description you can give this HDTV. While waiting for my HDMI 1.3 cables to be delivered, I was using the component outputs of my 2 Dish Network DVRs. When watching a high quality 1080i HDTV broadcast, it makes you say, How could it possibly get any better? Then UPS came with the HDMI 3.1 cables and I hooked them up.
With HDMI 1.3 the picture got even sharper and the colors more saturated. Even the sound going to my audio system got more brilliant and Im still waiting for my optical audio cable to be delivered. WOW!!!!!
This TV has so many switchable inputs, 3 of them being HDMI 1.3 Im actually able to switch back and forth between the component and HDMI inputs from my DVRs to verify that Im not kidding myself. Simply Amazing! HDMI 1.3 cables Are A Must!
How can the picture get any better? 1080p -- the output youll get from some Blu Ray and HD-DVD players, which through my own stupidity I havent been able to view on this set yet, because I hesitated just one day when Vanns had the LG Combo player for less than the price of most Blu Ray only players, and now theyre all gone. I hope the get them in again or I may just have to wait for a Recordable Blu Ray set top box to come out at a reasonable price.
Remember, DLP gives you finer detail than plasma and LCD because there are no ugly pixels to see if you look closely at the screen. Also, this set does away with the expensive projection bulb that usually burns out after 1-12 to 2 years, because it uses Brilliant LED Illumination instead, which is supposed to last the life of the, OK Ill say it TV.
NOW FOR THE DOWNSIDE
For all of the above, I had to make a sacrifice - NO Variable Audio Output, so I have to use 2 remotes to control the volume, because the built-in speakers do a great job of bringing VOICES in front of all the great surround sound and background sounds. I also use a center channel speaker from my sound system ABOVE the set. This combination make the dialog appear to come right out of the screen where the people are!
The only other downside that other reviewers mentioned, is that poor quality Standard Definition can look really bad. THIS IS NOT THE FAULT OF THIS SET, its just that this set is so sharp and clear, it shows every minute detail, so garbage in is garbage out, big time.
Ive been watching my Dish DVRs for about 2 years on a 46 Toshiba CRT rear projection set, and it wasnt until I hooked them up to this DLP, that I could actually see that the progress indicator when you pause or fast forward is actually Hand Drawn. THATS HOW SHARP THIS PICTURE IS.
Get one while you can. Samsung has already discontinued this model, probably because the wont be able to sell replacement projection bulbs to owners of this extraordinary HDTV. |

The TV looks great, even when its not on. Its beautiful. The set-up was fairly simple and it looks spectacular. The menus are straight forward and filled with nice options to optimize the set. The first source I plugged in was my Xbox 360 and after setting it up to output 1080p, I finally saw how great a video game can look. I really cant put into words how fantastic it is. The HD channels from my cable box are clear as a bell and even SD channels are good, though with a set this size, you do notice that its a substandard signal. Oh well.
One review I read from CNet said there was a bright spot in the center of the screen. I havent noticed this in the slightest. The blacks are deep and rich and the colors are vibrant. I really couldnt be happier about purchasing this set. The price was right and vastly more affordable than competing technology of a simila size. Anyone thinking about going to a big screen should strongly consider this family of DLP tvs. |
