Full HD 1080p Resolution

With the KDL40XBR2, full HD 1080 means 1920 x 1080 pixels and 1080p video inputs. Your lifestyle demands the best in high-definition and with BRAVIA Full HD 1080 products you get it. This panel's resolution, with over 2 million pixels (more than twice that of 720p HDTV) is exactly what you need to reproduce the 1080p content that can be delivered by products like Sony's 1080p Blu-ray disc player. The BRAVIA Engine

The KDL40XBR2 features the BRAVIA Engine PRO full digital video processor. Sony improved on the great benefits of the BRAVIA engine by adding a picture quality enhancement circuit called Digital Reality Creation Multi-function v2.5. DRC-MFv2.5 now has the added ability to process interlaced and progressive video singals and because it has twice the processing power of previous DCR-MF circuits, it can do its processing and output them to 1080p (Native 1080p input signals are not processed through DRC-MVv2.5). Add to this the crisp details, outstanding contrast, eye popping colors, and dramatically reduced digital artifacts that DRC-MF circuitry is known for. And the best part of all is that this technology is user adjustable according to the video source. All of this helps define the reason why people want Sony TVs to begin with -- unparalleled picture quality.

Live Color Creation

Sony not only pushes resolution to the limits but also brings color reproduction to new heights. Live Color Creation achieves more precise and wider color reproduction using a combination of advanced chroma signal processing algorithms along with Sony's WCG-CCFL (Wide Color Gamut Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp). The results have to be seen to be believed. Clearer blues, more natural and broader range of greens -- vibrant colors throughout any scene.

High Contrast Ratio

Sony uses a dynamic backlighting system called ACE (Advanced Contrast Enhancement) on BRAVIA TVs. ACE automatically senses the APL (Average Picture Level) of the video signal and adjusts the intensity of the backlight for improved contrast. VESA test and measurement methods are applied yielding a contrast ratio of 7000:1. This number represents the widest possible ratio between black and white contrast levels. Sony also measures their BRAVIA televisions with a more stringent method that measures the amount of black and white levels that can appear on the screen at the same time. This method yields a more real world measurement of 1300:1.

Designed for maximum versatility, the KDL40XBR2 LCD TV is equipped with a comprehensive range of input interfaces. The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. HDMI technology supports enhanced or High Definition video, together with multi-channel digital audio to provide matchless image and sound reproduction. The KDL40XBR2 includes 3 HDMI 1080p inputs. The PC input (HD-15pin) offers easy connection to your PC, allowing you to use your new high resolution BRAVIA as a computer monitor.

Audio Sweet Spot

In audio lingo the "sweet spot" is the zone where audio sounds its best. Most of the time this is not truly a sweet situation. Put an average system in a typical room and you may not have much of a sweet spot. Rather than rearrange the furniture or settle for sound that's less than it should be, you should turn an ear toward Sony's TruSurround XT system. Building on the success of TruSurround, TruSurround XT adds three new audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience. Dialog Clarity brings movie dialogue into focus during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper. TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself. And WOW widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system. There is also an audio output that can be set for fixed or variable output, giving you the option of sending your television's audio to an external sound system and either controlling the volume through your receiver/amplifier (fixed output) or through your TV (variable output).

I searched long and hard to find the right TV, I was looking specifically for an ~40 LCD and it came down to the Sony, Sharp and Samsung. After a quick look in person at the Sharp, I was simply not impressed. The picture was broken up even at 1080i. Seeing the Sony I was blown away by the difference in quality of picture. Even standard def television looks great on this tv, HD looks simply amazing. The Samsung looked good, but the Sony just looked better to me.

I have had the tv for a couple of weeks now and my only complaint is that I was unable to get 1080p from my mac mini via a DVI-HDMI cable. I have it hooked up through the PC VGA input and the picture does still look great, but I was hoping for a pure digital connection. I am able to achieve full 1920x1080 resolution via the VGA input.

To sum up, this tv is worth the money. Vanns did an amazing job, I got great financing and shipping was insanely fast. I ordered the TV on Friday and received it the next Monday, I wasnt expecting it for another week!

Pros - Great picture, lots of inputs, easy to use on-screen menus, aesthetically pleasing

Cons - Can only achieve 1280x760 via DVI-HDMI
