First let me say that this was a totally positive buying experience. The Vanns staff was very helpful in the selection process and with questions after the sale. I was a little concerned about the delivery because I had never had anything shipped by Yellow Freight. In tracking the shipment I called them a couple of times. They have to be the most professional, knowledgeable and friendly support people I have ever talked to, including the driver. And the television was delivered on time.
There is no question in my mind that this is the best picture on a 50 inch television available. I looked for weeks and nothing comes close in color accuracy and shadow detail. One of the best ways to see this is in a night scene of a black street. The detail and clarity is amazing. Nothing else looks this good. The blacks are so black that in a night scene with black sky at the top of the picture, you cannot tell where the screen ends and the black border of the bezel begins.
As a serious photographer I wanted to see how my images would look viewed on the PRO1150HD. What I saw was far better than my LCD computer monitor. While the computer monitor is sharp, it does not show the subtle changes in color that the Pioneer does. If it were not for burn-in concerns I would do my Photoshop work on the television.
The sound is pretty good for on-board speakers but not as good as the 4 year old DLP television it replaced. This all changed when I hooked up a powered subwoofer to the output on the television. Before you invest in an additional sound system, I would suggest you try adding a powered sub first and see how it sounds in your room.
The remote control is somewhat directional. This only became a problem for me because I had located my satellite receiver on the left side of the television and the televisions sensor is located on the right side. So in using a common remote, one would sometimes come on and not the other. Eventually Ill move the receiver to the right side.
This television is 720P but is available from Pioneer in 1080P. Dont waste your money. I viewed the two sets side by side in a high end electronics store. With an HD disk playing you had to be 3 feet from the screens to see the difference and then it was only very slight and not visible on all subject matter. From a normal viewing distance you could not see any difference at all. I think the improvement of 1080P probably starts at 60 and above
The setup was a breeze. The hardest part was trying to neatly arrange all the cables from my various components. The color was great right out of the box. Dont let anyone sell you on a custom in home calibration.
I know the trend is rapidly going to LCD. But if you have a critical eye and want the best 50 picture available this is the set. Nothing else will match it.
