Where You Are
The trouble with ordinary maps is, they don't know where you are. GARMIN's exclusive 12 channel receiver gives you a position fix in as little as 15 seconds, and stays locked on to satellites in the toughest of conditions-even under heavy foliage or tree canopy. There's even a position averaging feature that helps reduce the effects of Selective Availability (SA). An external antenna provides impressive reception for added security and reliability.
Where You've Been
This GPS remembers where you've been as well. Your route is tracked and stored along with names, icons and a brief description. With one keystroke, trip odometer and speed calculations are in clear view. You can even display sunrise and sunset times so you're not left in the dark.
Where You're Going
The most remarkable thing about the GPS III is it's basemap. It shows primary landmarks for North, South and Central America. And after telling you how far you are from a given point, it will figure the time required to arrive.
Getting Back
GARMIN GPS gives you added peace of mind knowing you have the TracBackª feature to create a one-touch route to follow your path all the way back home-without marking a single waypoint. If an emergency does arise, just press the MOB button and your location is instantly captured and steering guidance back to the position is computed, so help can reach you sooner.

I recently purchased the Garmin GPS III+ from Vann's. I could go on and on about how good the customer service is, but this space is for product review. On the glorious day my GPS unit arrived, I was amazed at how compact it was. I wondered how all the features it had could be packed into such a small unit. I have used it on numerous trips to plot quicker routes, record mileage, and to gain better perspective of surrounding areas. The Garmin unit allows me to see my speed of travel, compass direction, and GPS coordinates. One touch is all you'll need to go to the next screen for even more info. The backlit screen is a must for night time use, and the unit won't be damaged by a little rain if you're camping. The Garmin GPS III+ is a great buy for the money when you consider all the features. You won't believe how much safer you feel travelling with this unit than with the old, out dated paper map. Buy the GPS III+ and buy from Vann's, you can't go wrong.

I recently purchased the GPS III PLUS after owning a Etrex LEGEND for several months. The GPS III PLUS is much more user friendly, and it's accuracy far surpasses that which I found with the LEGEND. I recently traveled the exact same route that I have numerous times with the LEGEND, and found that the III PLUS never came close to losing a signal, which has happened several times with the LEGEND. While the LEGEND touts the side controls being user friendly, I found the III PLus controls (face mounted and labeled) were much easier to utilize especially while driving. I sincerely feel that the External antenna sported on the III PLUS is a step ahead of the LEGEND. Battery life of the III PLus is really a "plus" also.... so far I am going on 21 hours with rechargables.
PS: Vanns has been one of the most user friendly, informative, and cooperative businesses online, and via landline that I have had the pleasure of dealing with.

This device is truly amazing. It will certainly change the way you travel. The build quality is great, and there are several nice touches that show a lot of forethought (or evolution). The performance has been well-documented, and it lives up to its high marks. There are many features embedded in this little device, so it takes awhile to learn how to manage everything, but after some practice you can get all the information you need rather quickly. I've used it mainly in two ways: to pre-plan my hikes and ski trips (and stay on track, obviously), and to help navigate in the car during our road trips.
For hiking, it's best to get a USGS topo map-reading software package (I use and recommend OziExplorer). You can download topo maps for nearly every area in the US (for free), and plot your waypoints with extreme accuracy, noting landmarks along the way. These waypoints can be uploaded to the Garmin, and in combination with the simplified topo maps that can be uploaded, it would truly be difficult to get lost, even on top of a snow-covered mountain with very few landmarks (I use it back-country skiing in Colorado).
Using it for road trips was really a revelation. I mount the remote antenna to the inside of my windshield (with the suction cup), and the triangular shape allows me to set the GPS above my steering wheel on the dash (in front of the speedometer), where I can quickly glance at the screen. I then connect it to my laptop, running Street Atlas. My wife can then follow our progress on a full-color map, and can look for food, lodging, or points of interest along the way. This method provides a wonderful feeling of freedom, since the Street Atlas software contains names, ratings, rates and phone numbers of most lodges along the way, in addition to food and gas stations. It's an incredible thing to be driving long after dark in the rain, not able to really see where your hotel is or how to get there, but being able to look at the map and see the turn coming up. It's also a life-saver when driving through unfamiliar cities or looking for an airport, etc. My wife is a technophobe, but she has come to love this thing (probably because I don't yell at her anymore). I've taken it on trips with other people, and after some initial skepticism everyone I have tried it with has become a believer. I really can't recommend it enough!

I recently upgraded to a III Plus from a Garmin 90 aviation model. I can't believe the acquisition times I'm getting with the III Plus. The 90 typically took about 3 to 5 minutes to acquire and it was using a very expensive antenna mounted on the top of the wing of the airplane. In the car it would sometimes take up to 15 minutes or a restart to come up. The III Plus has never taken more than a minute or two and usually comes up in less than a minute. I've used it in the car and on my ATV. With just the standard antenna it locks on and stays there, even in a downtown area or out in the woods. I also love the detailed maps that I can download from the MapSource CD. My only complaint is that I can't store more detail data. I'd love to be able to have a flash memory card for it.

if only because it is rated to be submersed in water, not to mention it's the most versatile. Define the water resistance codes on the new eMap models. They can only be used in a light mist! Try and find your way out of the Amazon Rain Forest when your GPS is waterlogged. See Garmin's website for definition of the waterproof codes. There's a reason why the GPS III Plus has been around awhile.

This is simply a great gadget - packed full of features and reliable. I found the menus and functions fairly intuitve and easy to use on the GPSIII+. However, when navigating through menus/functions, the buttons are fairly stiff and require a little authority to get them to respond. I almost always take it with me on any excursion over 20 miles. I especially like the speed indication (which seems to be really accurate) and the little icon that tracks your position on the map. Backlighting is superb and Garmin was clever enough to make it variable - good job! The GPS-III+ is a quality product.

This new "Big Boy Toy" works vantastic! It is very easy to use.
Understanding all the menus and how to set it up did take reading the users manual.
After that it is extreamly user friendly. I took it on a flight with me and it worked even at 600 miles per hour.
Its a lot of fun to have. Several of my friends have seen mine and plan on getting one also.

This is my first experience with a GPS but I was pleasantly surprised of the results. I purchased it for a hunting trip in Colorado and it did everything I expected it to do. A certain amount of time is required to learn the menues and functions, but well worth it. I use it on business trips and for marking fishing spots also. By using MapSource I can keep permanent records of all of this.

This unit is a solid performer. After a bit of fumbling around with the user's manual and playing with the unit, I found it very useful. Juwt finished an 8 hr trip and it was great to see where i was (without using a map), and why the car was chugging up the hills (checking the displayed altitude).
I like the ability to customize the screns displayed, but was disappointed in 2 areas: 1st, it is not "intuitive" in its setup. 2nd, all the information displayed is not downloadable after the trip -- altitude is one.
Overall I'm pleased with the ruggedness of the unit (yes it was dropped, and kept on working), and the information that you can display at a single time.

This is another solid product from Garmin. It can acquire satellites even when surrounded by mountains. It has an elevation reading which you don’t find in many other handheld GPS devices, although it requires strong signals from many satellites to get an accurate reading. Some functionality is a little hard to find (you have to read the manual to fully utilize all the GPS functions), but it has great features and a very simple interface. One of the things I like best about it is that you can customize which readings you want shown. Definitely a good buy for the price.
