The DVDV9800 from Samsung lets you move on to the DVD future without giving up your VHS past. It features a progressive scan DVD player and a hi-fi stereo VCR. The DVD player not only plays DVD releases, but also DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CDs, including CD-R/RW discs, even those with MP3/WMA files burned on them. You can also view JPEG picture CDs. VHS hi-fi stereo recording and playback provides top quality video and audio recording from cable/satellite set-top box input or other external source components. This unit has no built-in TV tuner. Watch DVDs you already have in high definition
Get the most out of your high definition TV and your existing collection of standard DVD resolution discs with Samsung's DVDV9800 upconversion feature. With the increasing interest in HDTV, many home theater owners find themselves with a new digital television but no high definition programming to take the best advantage of their investment. Samsung's upconversion technology opens up a vast library of 480p native resolution DVD material to output in a selectable high definition format (720p, 1080i, or 1080p) that matches the native resolution of your television. All you need is an HDMI cable and a high definition television with an HDMI input. Not only are the output signals upgraded, but the entire process takes place in the digital domain, eliminating data loss and other artifacts associated with analog conversion.
Stunning sights, thrilling sounds
Upconverted signals are sent from the DVDV9800 to a compatible TV by HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) output. With this latest single-cable connection, the signal stays digital until it's displayed on the screen, for the cleanest picture quality possible. There's also more conventional video outputs for TVs that aren't HDMI-equipped. Composite video and component video are both available. And what good is a stunning high definition picture without thrilling surround sound? Samsung provides both coaxial and optical digital audio outputs for connection to your home theater receiver. The DVDV9800 supports Dolby Digital and DTS encoded DVDs, so you're always certain to have great sound to go along with a great picture no matter what DVD you play.
Are there formats you can't play?
There might be, but it won't be one of the predominant formats. This machine plays DVD video, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, VCD, CD audio, CD-R/RW; and, as if that weren't enough, the DVDV9800 also plays MP3, WMA, and JPEG files on CD-R discs. JPEG files can be seen in a slide show with adjustable intervals between images; and you can zoom in on an image or rotate it. The DVDV9800 even delivers high-quality DivX movies. Just insert a DVD or CD that has DivX movies downloaded via computer and enjoy watching them on your large-screen TV.

Not only does the DVDV9800 do a lot, it does a lot without giving you a headache. An easy-to-navigate tri-lingual on-screen display makes setup a breeze. The EZView letter box eliminator lets you get rid of the black letterbox bars on standard 4:3 aspect ratio TV screens with the push of a button on the remote control. Four heads help give the VCR superior slow motion and stop action, and you get intro scan, zero return, and end search to make navigating VHS tapes even easier. There's also one-touch recording to activate 30 minutes of recording time per button push on the remote control. Repeat title/chapter, along with a variable search system will help you get through DVDs, and a parental control system helps you keep the kiddies out of rated DVD content you'd rather not have them see.

I recently attempted to set up the new VCRDVD combo with my TV when I came across the following problems I have an old SONY Trinitron TV, an outdoor antena, a converter box, and a 8 year old Panasonic combo which is compatible but the heads are well worn. In trying to set up the new combo I was able to use the redyellowwhite cable to the TV the converter box and the VCR but was not able to get the TV to recognize the VCR. I was told that I needed the original remote for the TV to use the input button to check for Line 1 or line 2, but that is not an option. Without the old remote, it will not be possible to check the compatibility . Now what? I recommend if possible, that consumers check what would be required to make an item compatible with their current system.

The combo is very easy to hookup to an HDTV and setup was a breeze. Given its price it has a whole host of features...multiple connection options, remote works seamlessly with our Samsung HDTV in fact it looks almost identical to the TV remote, upscales DVDs to 1080p format which looks considerably better than 480p, easy recording features when used in conjunction with a Samsung TV, VCR allow my wife to go old school and back in the day.

This product was not as described on a referring website. I expected it to be both a DVD player and recorder. It is a player only. I have returned the item. Unfortunately it cost me $ 38 in shipping cost to return it.

Solid performer. Hooked it up to Standard Definition TV so cannot comment on HD quality. Picture on SDTV is excellent for both DVD and VCR. Very good sound. Lots of connection options AV, Composite Video, HDMI, Optical and Coaxial Digital Audio. Nice bright green display. Have not recorded with it, just using as a player. Great price.

Just needed a VCR to play VHS tapes and copy onto DVDs and received the DVD player also. Very simple unit to set up with component output connections. Pretty good enhansment but the HDMI connection only works with the DVD player. Just wanted and received a VCR player at a good price. Nice shipping, handling and delivery also! THANKS

Excelent product. This is the second unit of this model we have purchased. It was straight forward to install and the Samsung remote makes it easy to use. The VCR player allows us to use some of our older VHS tapes that have not yet been converted. It works great and we would recommend it to others.

You might be sorry that you ask. I have good results with the dvd but the vcr just will not record when the the Samsung 40 series 550 is turned off. It records in AV1 while the television is on but once the TV is off and when I play back I get a message an error message that it will not playback in a DVI mode and that I should use a different input. I tried them all but without success. I still dont know what I want to do.

The DVD-V9800 has been flawless in execution from day one. Easy install and simply worked great as both DVD VHS tape player. Havent used the transfer capability yet, just play modes. The controllers only lack is for lit keys. The fast forward reverse modes are at good speeds and the unit has all of the video output standards so using it with an HD TV is simple.

picture quality with the dvd player and sound were awesome.set up was also fairly easy only problem i had was hdmi was for the dvd and the vcr was component which my tv does not have .
