I have had the Onkyo DV-CP704 6 disc changer for about a month now and Im very pleased with the performance of this unit. It is much better than
the DV500CP that it replaced. The controls are more intuitive and the changer is much faster and quieter than the 500. The disc tray light is nice for loading discs in low light conditions and it just looks cool, you can also turn it off if you want to. The remote has the ability to learn other components, thats helpful in reducing clutter when you have multiple brands of equiptment, however it would be nice if it were backlit or had luminesant keys to see in dark settings. Its easy to hook up to your home theater system. The machine supports all the normal component connections as expected, analog and digital plus optical. The ability to adjust screen resolution and even the shape is a great feature, it has several choices and works well with my older Sony projetion TV. Of course it is designed to use the latest technology in HD 1080i format and provides an HDMI port for that purpose. It has a built in microprocessor that gives it so many features I cant list them all.
And its smart too. It does what its supposed to when asked, but not what it thinks you want it to do.
Case in point, one feature I find convenient is unlike the 500, when you place a disc in the carousel and close the door it just dosent assume you want the disc to play and automatically start it, you have to press the play button. This way you dont have to scramble to your seat before the movie starts so you can leave the remote where its handy. The last memory feature is nice. You can remove a disc from the unit or even shut it off and it will resume playback at that point, it even remembers the soundtrack and subtitle settings,
A nice feature for multiple users or if you get tired and want to resume playback at another time. It has a Parental lock feature that gives the ability to block or even replace scenes that the authors have flagged as being unsuitable for children that works with some of the newer discs.
One minor setback is it sometimes lags just a bit at chapter changes, and at that not all the time, but that only seems to happen on realy old discs it hasent done that on newer material.
It also supports sixty plus languages for disc menus, audio and subtitles. The machine also plays MP3 WMA JPEGs in a slideshow format and can view DVD-R RW-CD-R RW formats.
You can view your pictures placed on CD or DVD from your camera or computer, its nice to be able to see them on a larger screen.
The music playback is excellent and has all the features you would expect of a machine of this quality.
I must admit that it gets most of its use as a DVD player so far and I have some what neglected my CDs, it will be used much more very soon.
Even with all the features its easy to use.
It has an onscreen menu thats easy to navagate.
Although in order to take full advantage of all the features the first time set up is a bit time consuming but well worth it.
Its quite a bit smaller than the old unit so it fits better in my rack, I was able to rearange things to move my record turntable in with the rest of the components.
I have had Onkyo components now for twenty years and the DV-CP704 Im sure will be as durable and reliable as I have come to expect from their products.
The only execption was the DV-CP 500, that for a while was a good machine but was not as durable as I would have hoped it to be. But in its defense was a product from the early stages of multiple disc format changer technology.
The Amp and other decks have been bullet proof.
The DV-CP704 has allot of features. Its more than a great bargain for a changer in this price range, I think you could spend allot more money and not get all the features this unit has to offer.

I purchased this player upon realizing that it was probably time to replace my semi-defunct, 7-year-old Toshiba 5-disc changer when I bought a new Sony HD TV. I looked the Sony 5-disc changer thats out there right now, and, though it had pretty good reviews, I wasnt sure about it. Then I found this Onkyo here at Vanns, and it seemed to be just what I wanted. Ive always loved Onkyo, and I was happy to find that they make a reasonably priced changer.
Ive had it a few weeks now, and it has performed very well. Multi-disc changers are typically a bit slow to load discs, and, like its peers, this one is not a speed demon, but its better than acceptable to me. The connections were easy enough, and the instructions in the manual are written clearly and logically.
LOVE the blue light over the disc tray, because now I can see which disc is in which number - that was a psychic endeavor with my Toshiba. Plus it looks cool. Thats what at least half of this is about, right? And did I say that I love the blue light over the disc tray?
Some people have commented that they dont like the fact that discs dont start playing automatically when they load. Personally, I dont mind pushing Play. What I dont like, however, is that when one disc finishes playing, the next one starts automatically. My changer is used way more for CDs than for DVDs, and sometimes Im very happy for the discs to play on their own for continuous music, but at other times I just want to play one disc. Surely this is a setting somewhere that I havent found yet, and I admit I havent read the manual thoroughly. Even if theres not such a setting, its not a deal-breaker for me. I like this player very much.
Although Ive put components together for years, I dont keep up well on the technical details, so I cant comment on the upconverting ability of this player except to say that my regular DVDs look and sound great with this player. My favorite sample is the Blue Planet series, which was amazing enough on my old TV and old DVD player. With the new TV, it got better, and now, with this new Onkyo player, its incredible.
With regard to Vanns, I liked their price, their shipping was prompt, and the changer arrived double-boxed and in perfect condition. I also think their website is well-organized and easy to use. Overall, a great purchase.
