First off, I have to say that the guys at Vann's are bunch of courteous and knowledgeable professionals. The prices are very reasonable and with the free shipping and fast delivery you cannot go wrong and I wish the service and the professionalism of all online stores were as good as these guys. By the way, I never rave about anything unless I truly believe in it, so a BIG thanks to all you guys at Vann's for a great online shopping experience. OK, now to the review... Since the HD DVD is coming soon, I did not see any point to spend too much money on an upconverter DVD player. I had purchased a few upconverter DVD players Samsung, Denon, etc. before but had to return all of them. The DVP-NS90V is the best product I have seen for the price. Side by side comparison of this player with other players can tell the difference. Of course you will never get the picture that you get from an HD camera i.e., shows on HD Discovery channel but this is a great inexpensive player to make it as close to an HD picture as possible. Colors and skin tones are natural, black levels are great and high speed action scenes do not degrade the picture quality. This player has also great features, the one I enjoy the most is the slow motion replay which is very smooth rather than the feel of frame-by-frame on other players. SACD is also a great feature when listening to SACD music CDs. With the HDMI output you will get 100 raw digital video and audio signal. I tested the 3-Doors Down live concert DVD Away from the Sun and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon SACD on this player. Both video and audio quality is amazing. It also helps if you have a good TV and AV system! It seemed to be a good match to our priceperformance needs, and produced good audio and picture quality from the video cable and optical digital ouputs to our receiver and older TV. I was completely satisfied with it until I tried one of my daughter's Harry Potter DVDs that had some pretty good scratches in it. I wouldn't expect a mid to low priced DVD player to read right through scratches without any glitches, but bad input data shouldn't be able cause a firmware crash the way it can with this model. I had to unplug the unit and plug it back in before it would respond to commands from the buttons or the remote. I could repeatedly duplicate the problem on two different units, both at home and in the store. The play time when it would freeze was within a couple of seconds between the two units. I always used to associate Sony with quality, but at least when it comes to firmware, now I'm not so sure.
