Progressive Scan and Disc Compatibility
The new generation of "high scanning" televisions can display twice as much on-screen resolution as their predecessors. This is a DVD player that takes advantage of that performance. If you have a high definition TV, you can take full advantage of the progressive scan 480P output that delivers beautiful, film-like images to HD capable TVs, projectors and monitors. But professionally produced DVD movies aren't all you'll enjoy with this dynamic player. This 400-disc changer also accepts DVD-RW/-R (Video Mode) discs and DVD+RW/+R, so you'll be ready when the relatives start sending you their homemade DVD movies from the family reunion. When your eyes have had enough, you can listen to your CD-R/RW discs, including those burned with your favorite MP3 files. For those audiofiles, it is also capable of playing the SACD format. So, step up to modern high-quality entertainment with this 400 Disc DVD changer.
A Conversion Experience & Overcoming Limitations
You'll be singing the praises of Sony's dedicated 12-bit, 108MHz D/A (digital/analog) converter the first time you watch a movie on this amazing DVD player. The digital to analog converter produces several times the fine gradations in the luminance (Y) channel and twice the fine gradations in each of the color channels. So, you get beautiful rendition of colors and gray scale from the deepest black to the brightest highlights. Sony DVD players have a solid reputation for their ability to play discs that are warped, dusty or otherwise less than perfect. Now, with the Precision Drive 2 system, Sony players can track even better. The system uses dynamic tilt compensation to give you the best performance from every disc you play. This improved mechanism is simpler, faster and able to correct for an even wider range of disc imperfections.
Block Noise Reduction
One characteristic limitation of DVD's MPEG compression system is "block noise". This is the tendency of delicately shaded picture areas to be rendered as solid rectangles of color. Instead of a continuous contour of color fading softly into shadow on the cheek of an actress, you see subtle blocks of approximately correct color. Sony controls the problem on the vertical axis with Block Noise Reduction. Because the player knows where the block borders are, it identifies and suppresses block noise. The result is a smoother, more delicately shaded and more lifelike image. Other image enhancing circuitry includes Digital Video Equalization that provides factory preset settings that you can use to digitally adjust your DVD player for optimum video quality.
Become a Disc Explorer
This unit will read all the disc information for you and loads it into memory. Once loaded into memory it reads disc type, titles, and other text info and displays it on the TV screen. When a disc is loaded into this dvd player you will be able to sort it into one of seven folders using the File Mode functions. For even more control it has an Edit Mode and Sort mode which give you even more flexibility with how you access and store your discs.
We Have You Virtually Surrounded
If you don't have surround speakers, this DVD changer offers TV Virtual Surround modes that can generate convincing surround sound effects. You can choose from several different modes that match your program material and situation. These sound modes are all optimized for use with your television's built-in speakers so there's no reason to put off picking up a DVD player any longer.

I've just ordered my SECOND Sony DVP-CX985V because for the price, it's a remarkable player. I own the 300 disc predecessor from Sony as well and it's been relagated to the 'books on tape' audio archive. This player made some key upgrades e.g. progressive scan, better disc presence detection and still comes in at an affordable price, typically less than a buck a disc. Personally, I've had zero maintenance problems and it's worked flawlessly since I opened the box
As with the other reviews, I have praise for the picture quality and compatibility and less praise for the disc cataloguing and menu functions but having looked at everything on the market, I think that no one has come up with an efficient solution for the latter. If you expect any player to auto-read all your library and magically pull the titles from the internet, I have little bridge in the New York area that I can sell you cheap. Let go of that particular dream for a few more years and be happy with this solution that will make your movies look great.
Fortunately for you, I have come up with a solution that's painfully cheap and simple in the interim. It's this thing called a spreadsheet. Just make a quick list of all 400 discs and shoot it to the printer a few times. Afterall, do you really care to see disc playing info and such WHILE the disc is playing? The only real reason to get all that info sorted and listed is to GET the disc you want playing. After it starts and the pesky forced play FBI warning and commercials are over, your concern is on the screen and who's getting the popcorn.
Make your lists simple disc number and title only or complex season of tv series, episodes, genre, yadda, yadda. A good old fashioned paper list is easy to update and easy to enter at first. Forget about trying to type all that info onscreen, or even with an attached keyboard. It's a disc player, not a word processor Jim! Sure I'd like all my discs to be encoded and automatically load up but even if Sony made the player that would do that, you'd have a problem with legacy discs lacking the encoding. After almost two years with my first copy of this player, I'm happy with this solution and the picture and sound just can't be beat for the price. Happy discing out there, don't forget to get off the couch every once in a while. This machine puts DAYS of programming at your fingertips!

This DVD changer is a must have player for anyone who has lots of DVD's. This changer has an incredible capacity of storing 400 DVD's, which you can access by the touch of a button on the remote. It played my DVDR discs without skipping a frame. It took me some time to load all the discs , but once that is done, I have my own movie channel running all the time. The Disc Explorer feature is a pretty good utility that lets you browsesort your collection. This utility is a bit slow to navigate, but is not a real shortcoming. I could connect a keyboard to edit the movie titles and this made loading and managing the discs pretty easy compared to entering the information using the remote control. Due to the number of discs the system can store, the size of the unit is little larger than a regular DVD player, so make sure that you have space in your entertainment center to park this monster machine.
This is great buy and I would recommend it for any one. The Vanns's, free shipping, no tax and fast service features made this as one of my favorite purchases in the recent times.

I just purchased this unit to replace my old Sony 300 disk changer that died. So far this one is a vast improvement at a great price. My old 300 disk player had problems pulling disks from the get go. Some times they wouldn't go in without a good thump on the front and the unit would lock up. The new player doesn't seem to suffer the same problem, it loaded 200 disks and not one jammed. It is so much quieter and so far I have no complaints about it. In fact I am thinking of purchasing the same unit for a relative for Christmas.

Love this DVD player! It hold my entire DVD collection and then some. It seemed complicated at first but after a little while the controls and functions were easy to understand. I would recommend this product to anyone who need to clear up some space and get rid of all of their DVD slipcovers. I still have room for some of my CD's but I really want to dedicate this machine to home theater. The SACD capability is awesome too.

Having owned and been satisfied with my Sony 200-disc CD changer for years now, I was excited about the new 400-disc CDDVD player. I read a number of reviews on the product prior to purchase and have found most of the commments, both pro and con, to be accurate.
It is a great convenience and safekeeping for your media to have all your DVD movies inside a single unit. Although the remote control is a bit clunky with small buttons and less-than-intuitive combinations, it still takes less time to locate and begin playing a movie than it would to take it off the shelf and put it into the DVD player.
The title fields are limited, just adequate to identify which movie is which. I maintain several external spreadsheet printouts for easy reference - one by disc number, one by title, another by genre, etc. Once you know which disc slot you're looking for, it's easy to select and play it.
I would prefer a better remote control for navigating and entering the information. I hooked up an external keyboard to enter the titles but still had to constantly interact with the remote to go from screen to screen. Also, the unit's LED display doesn't display title information unlike my Sony 200-disc player which displays the album title for whatever disc is playing.
If you're most interested in getting all of your DVD's in one place and minimizing your handling of them - especially good for children - then this is the way to go. I'm sure the technology will improve along with the features on these units but, in the meantime, I'm happy with what this unit will do. It has a parental lock which keeps the little ones from selecting and playing movies not intended for them.
I would recommend this player to anyone who, like me, likes to have things organized and well cared for. We took all the DVD covers and put them into one notebook for reference and threw away the plastic cases. Although this player has a sizeable footprint, it takes up a lot less space than all those DVD cases would!

What I wanted was something that will store lots of movies, with little hassle, and for a great price. That is exactly what this Sony is. Granted, it's not entirely fast to load and play DVD's, but I wasn't expecting that.
My only true complaint to date is this and maybe there's a way around this that I haven't figured out yet
Say you open it up and load in 10 new DVD's. Close it up, go to the folder view. Now you see the slots in the folder view with a '?' for each dvd. which of course is ok because the dvd player hasn't played it yet to determine the type DVD, CD, SACD, etc. BUT here's my complaint You can't go in and edit the name of the dvd UNTIL the dvd player plays it first to determine the format! In my example, I can't just go from dvd to dvd and enter the titles. I have to PLAY the dvd each time. So back and forth, from the folder menu to the actual play mode 10 times. Takes an incredibly long time. Kinda of a pain.

Unbeatable value, similar products are at least $600. Both picture and sound are as good as any single disc player I've used. Reliability may be an issue, I purchased this unit to replace a DVP-CX860 that was headed for service for the 3rd time in 3 years - but even with 5 year extended service it's $100 cheaper than anything else on the market. Completely different drive system than the earlier players, I'm hoping they got it right this time. This thing is very deep - I had to cut a hole in the back of my AV cabinet and let the whole back hang out. Entering all the titles into the disc explorer was very tedious even with keyboard, and it was only able to read titles on about 20 of 250 discs loaded. Also somewhat annoying is that it won't let you fast forward through FBI warning or other miscellaneous title screens. No control cable for matching Sony receivers like previous units, and doesn't transmit titles to 2-way remotes like the Sony CD changers will.

SONY always seems to start out with great intentions, yet somehow miss the boat in terms of delivering a flawless product. Admittedly, a stellar concept a player that can load your entire DVD collection or at least 400 discs, enough for a nice weekend without having to lift a finger and keep them a button push away.
This player does that, and it performs reliably so far anyway, I've had it about 3 months now.
But here's the rub
It takes FOREVER to load the discs to start with.
The player supposedly autoloads DISC titles in memory, but only if your discs are encoded with this data to start with. And to find out if they are, you have to attempt to auto load the info, which takes about a minute per disc, and 90 of the time you end up having to key all the info in yourself. Thankfully SONY included a keyboard port on the FRONT of this unit, so you can plug in any computer keyboard and enter the titles fairly easily, although you need to combine your typing skills with concurrent and cumbersome manipulation of the onscreen menus via the remote.
Also, the remote DOES NOT display disc titles, NOR DOES THE UNIT ITSELF - you can only see disc titles on the tv screen menu, which is slow moving
and not terribly user-friendly.
One feature I do enjoy is the ability to capture any still scene from each DVD and use that as the onscreen icon for that disc in the menu.
It would be NICE if this icon also became a full screen still while the player was in stop mode on that disc number, but I guess I am asking for too much here - instead we get the ubiquitous SONY
blue screen.
The video and audio output is quite good, as you would expect from any DVD player, but SONY needs to pay more attention to putting together a fast- moving and enjoyable menu interface.
Also, the remote control is not terribly well-designed in that the buttons are too small and closely spaced, and you can't really tell certain key button features in the dark very easily.
All in all though, a fun little toy at a fair price.
One aside, and this is a gripe against the entire DVD industry, not this player in particular -
as a consumer, I am SICK and tired of being forced to watch the FBI warnings and the silly corporate logos for 1 or 2 minutes at the start of each and every DVD. ENOUGH ALREADY - life is short - let's put that swill at the END of the disc where it belongs, so we don't have to waste precious minutes looking at it. I PAID good money for my copy, I don't enjoy being treated like a potential criminal.

Sony is over the top with this one. I previously owned a Sony 200 disk machine, which has worked wonderfully. The 400 disk machine is even better, with more features. Like being able to play Super Audio cds and the ability to simultaneously use up three of these machines in one location. This could be the 'Greatest Video Jukebox' on the planet. Love it!!!
