Progressive Scan and Disc Compatibility
The new generation of "high scanning" televisions can display twice as much on-screen resolution as their predecessors. This is a DVD player that takes advantage of that performance. If you have a high definition TV, you can take full advantage of the progressive scan 720p/1080i upscaling video output that delivers beautiful, film-like images to HD capable TVs, projectors and monitors. But professionally produced DVD movies aren't all you'll enjoy with this dynamic player. This 400-disc changer also accepts DVD-RW/-R (Video Mode) discs and DVD+RW/+R, so you'll be ready when the relatives start sending you their homemade DVD movies from the family reunion. When your eyes have had enough, you can listen to your CD-R/RW discs, including those burned with your favorite MP3 files. For those audiofiles, it is also capable of playing the SACD format. So, step up to modern high-quality entertainment with this 400 Disc DVD changer.
A Conversion Experience & Overcoming Limitations
You'll be singing the praises of Sony's dedicated 12-bit, 108MHz D/A (digital/analog) converter the first time you watch a movie on this amazing DVD player. The digital to analog converter produces several times the fine gradations in the luminance (Y) channel and twice the fine gradations in each of the color channels. So, you get beautiful rendition of colors and gray scale from the deepest black to the brightest highlights. Sony DVD players have a solid reputation for their ability to play discs that are warped, dusty or otherwise less than perfect. Now, with the Precision Cinema Progressive system, Sony players can track even better. The system uses dynamic tilt compensation to give you the best performance from every disc you play. This improved mechanism is simpler, faster and able to correct for an even wider range of disc imperfections.
Block Noise Reduction
One characteristic limitation of DVD's MPEG compression system is "block noise". This is the tendency of delicately shaded picture areas to be rendered as solid rectangles of color. Instead of a continuous contour of color fading softly into shadow on the cheek of an actress, you see subtle blocks of approximately correct color. Sony controls the problem on the vertical axis with Block Noise Reduction. Because the player knows where the block borders are, it identifies and suppresses block noise. The result is a smoother, more delicately shaded and more lifelike image. Other image enhancing circuitry includes Digital Video Equalization that provides factory preset settings that you can use to digitally adjust your DVD player for optimum video quality.
Become a Disc Explorer
The DVP-CX995V will read all the disc information for you and loads it into memory. Once loaded into memory it reads disc type, titles, and other text info and displays it on the TV screen. When a disc is loaded into this dvd player you will be able to sort it into one of seven folders using the File Mode functions. For even more control it has an Edit Mode and Sort mode which give you even more flexibility with how you access and store your discs. And get this... this unique unit has the ability to set parental controls on all 400 discs, and has 40 Multiple Disc Resume playback!
We Have You Virtually Surrounded
If you don't have surround speakers, this DVD changer offers TV Virtual Surround modes that can generate convincing surround sound effects. You can choose from several different modes that match your program material and situation. These sound modes are all optimized for use with your television's built-in speakers so there's no reason to put off picking up a DVD player any longer.

The SONY DVP-CX995V player is fantastic easy to load, easy to use and very simple to build an index so that I can find the movie of my choice. The fact that I can search by title, Star, or genre makes it so simle for me and the ability to sort at the push of a button makes for a great experience, unlike my previous unit that was hard to build and search the index. The price I got from Vanns was really good, so I got a great product at a great price and Vanns is a very efficient company

I recently purchased the Sony DVP-CX995V to replace our older DVP-CX985V. For us, the main differences between the two were the reasons for upgrading to the newer model digital HDMI video output with upscaling of DVD movies to high-definition, the new version of Sonys Disc Explorer, and 192kHz24-bit audio DA converter the same specification as the DVP-CX777ES model for SACD playback.
The new Disc Explorer is faster, mainly because it does not display the jacket cover pictures for each disc in the main menu as did the previous versions. Other than that the two players are fairly similar.
Video and digital audio quality is very good Im using an HDMI-DVI cable for the video and a high quality DH Labs D-75 coaxial cable for the digital audio. The player also plays back JPEG pictures and MP3 audio burnt onto CD-R discs in this case. MP3 audio is output as 44.1 kHz PCM. The DVP-CX995V does not have any external control ports such as Sony Control S or Control A1II.
A few general points to note about previous and current Sony DVDSACD changers
- SACD Super Audio Compact Disc playback is analog output only.
- DVD-audio discs cannot be played.
This model, like most others, cannot play the second side of a dual-sided DVD disc the only model which did this was the now discontinued DVP-CX875P.
The majority of DVD video discs do not have title information which is displayed in the Disc Explorer menu. For this you will have to type in the information by attaching a keyboard to the player. This can be tedious if you have a large number of DVD movies, but it works very well. I have never experienced loosing the title information which I have entered.
All of the SACD discs we own already have title information on the disc. For discs which do contain title information, the text cannot be edited.
Actually, out of the four Sony DVD magachangers we have owned, I by far preferred the design of the DVP-CX875P to the other models.
There are two problems I am experiencing with the DVP-CX995V
- SACD playback.
For reasons unknown, I experience random audio dropouts when listening to SACDs. I have over 30 titles, all of which are brand new, with no scratchesdustfingerprints. The DVP-CX995V is installed on an isolation platform using four isolation bearings for vibration dampening, is supplied with clean power as is all of the other AV equipment, and is connected to my preamplifier using two high quality DH Labs analog interconnect cables with locking RCA connectors. I have tried cleaning the lens of the DVP-CX995V several times, but I still get random audio dropouts regardless of which SACD title I play...
I have never experienced any problems with digital audio from the player.
Also, I cant get SACD surround sound, as the analog inputs on my preamplifier are two channel stereo only. 5.1 surround output needs six inputs.
I really wish Sony would get their act together and make digital output standard for all SACD playback. Currently a few of the ES receivers have iLink inputs for digital SACD playback, and only a few ES models of single disc players have iLink output. Having to use analog audio connections between components is far from ideal, and vastly limits the potential of this audio format.
- HDMI upscaling.
The HDMI upscaling on my DVP-CX995V does not work, period.
The reason why ? Because it is connected to a Sony high definition screen PFM-42X1B using HDMI output from the player into a DVI input on the display. The player recognizes an HDMI connection, but will only output 640p. Even the Disk Explorer menu is displayed as 43 on a 169 screen automatically switching between 169 and 43 for DVD movie playback does work.
Calling Sony support didnt provide a solution.
The thing that really worries me is that Sony are moving towards HDMI output on all of their consumer video products, and it is highly likely that they wont work with DVI either.

I just got my DVP-CX995V, I put all my DVDs into the box, and I use 'load' function to get DVD information into this unit memory, and I edit a little bit on the Title so now the Title will show on the Front panel. it is the best of all DVD player I ever have. and the price vs function is 200 worth, specially when you have a lot of DVDs you will find out how much space you save for other stuff.. 400 DVD covers... that cost another $100.00 for rack.. not I invest all into my DVD and trade my space to my wine rack....
