Although this is our first recorder, this Pioneer is an absolutly wonderful device! We have only had ours for three months, but fell in love with it the first week. We had researched DVRs and found this one to be rated very well. I particularly love its ability to allow us to start watching a show that has already begun recording. That comes in very handy when we arrive home at 915 or 930, and want to watch CSI Miami or NY. The video quality on our 36 Flat Screen is excellent and the audio is great, whether we listen through the TV or through our stereo receiver. This DVR has two inputs and two outputs on the back which makes it versatle. Also, this DVR will record to both DVD-R-RW-RAM and DVDRRW, plus DL disks. Programming is easier than a VCR. And if the power goes out, it doesnt lose the programming and it can reset the clock, so you do not miss your shows unless power went out during the show, but then it still records the parts when it was on. If you want to keep a show, it is so easy to edit out the commercials on the HD, then burn it to a DVD. Great machine!! Oh, and Vanns is great to order from! They even sent a brochure on Glacier Country Montana if we want to visit!

This is my second DVR-640H-S. Ive owned the first one for about 6 months...and never knew DVD recording could be so easy! I use it to record TV shows and then watch them at my convenience...and convenience is the operative word with this unit! Everything is very intuitive and what isnt is easily sorted out with the on-screen help button. I previously owned a Panasonic DMR-ES10 and its poor at best very unreliable as to whether it will decide to record or not. If youre using a bad disc whatever that means, it doesnt let you know until you turn the unit on to finalize. Then it wants to format what it thinks is an unformatted disc. If your program is important, you still have to record a backup on another DVD recorder or a VCR to be sure you get it. The Pioneer has yet to fail to record a disc and - even if it did - youve still got the program on the hard drive, so you can always copy to a different - good - disc. Programming would probably by easier if you had an on-screen TV guide although Ive never used TIVO or anything that did. I understand previous versions had this feature but it was dropped on this release due to problems with the TV guide program, not the recorder. I give this unit my highest recommendation...or I wouldnt be buying a second one!

This is my third DVD recorder but my first Pioneer. I like it. It records very well. Because I have a small TV, 19 inch, I really can not comment on the video. It is better than the other two. The setup is easy. Even so it has a 134 page manual book. One thing, the sound is a little low. The output video looks better. I record at all the speed. Having a HD is great, I just record things each day and each week, and dont worry about it. Finding it can be a problem, but it is dated with the channel number, and time. I like it so much that if I had the money, I would buy another one.
Vanns is a good place. This is second time to order from them. Each time, they are on time and well taken care of.

I bought this machine to record shows and possibly do some basic editing. If you record something while watching it you can pause & rewind the show while its recording. I have digital cable and have read a lot of reviews where people had difficulty getting the DVD recorder to work with a digital cable box- I have had no issue. You can even transfer photos, & audio to the hard drive via USB. The menu is easy to work with. It makes it easy to locate & organize recorded video. Its a great machine, Im 100 satisified, & I havent even read the directions yet.

Setup was easy. The menu layout was intuitive, easy to learn. The multi-format progressive scan DVD recorder is first rate in every respect. So far zero disk incapabilities. DVD playback is the best non-HD Ive seen. The DVR recording is excellent. VCRplus works flawlessly. The VCRplus codes in my area are not published so we have to find them online. A downloadable TV guide would make the DVR nearly perfect. Programming manually is easy and fast. This machine has changed the way we watch TV.
