I bought this Toshiba unit in order to be able to copy our piles of VHS tapes to DVD. My wife is a choreographer and has many many performances on tape. No only are these tapes starting to degrade but the VHS format is just not cutting it in our lives any more. Enter the VHS-DVD recorder!
]This unit requires that you pay attention to the instructions and follow them... but once you decide to do your job it does its job as advertised... what else is there to say. A tool should do its intended job, and this one does.

I havent yet had the time to test out all its functions but this appears to be the best of several combination VCR-DVDs that I have owned over the years. Neat uncluttered cabinet and settings, excellent picture from both tapes and DVDs and super-simple recording capability. Would recommend it highly.

This combo with progressive scan possesses most of the features of higher priced models, and is easily operated and understood. It is very well worth its asking price.
There are only two flaws in its constellation of features.
One, if one sets it to record in advance and one utilizes the auxiliary output into the television set, one then cannot view programming while it is thus set, until of course it turns itself on to the designated time. One can view programming and record at the same time, however.
Secondly, when editing discs or video titles, there is not the ability to store certain titles of favorite programs, so that one does not need to write those titles repeatedly.
Otherwise, the constellation of features for so low a priced combo player is truly extraordinary!

Well the one thing the description doesnt say is there is no place to hook up your cable or satilite cables - so if youre planning on this as your soul link to the tv - not going to work.
Once you figure out the unit and muddle your way through the first or second dubbing, its pretty easy. The manual is horrible. I luckily had some knowledge of what finalizing is and once I figured out how to do that all was well.
But good unit once you figure out stuff. Pretty easy after install and testing. Great quality disks coming out of it. No copyguarded movies can be taped, but for this price, I wasnt expecting miracles. -

After hooking up this Toshiba DVDVCR recorder to my Scientific Atlanta cable box via the s-video input, I was not able record anything on either DVD or VHS. After reading the user manual from cover to cover several times, I found a single reference to potential recording limitations via the s-video input, but its actual meaning was ambiguous at best.
Other than its HDMI output for both DVD and VHS via a single cable, the main reason I decided on this unit was because I needed one that had an s-video input. What good is an s-video input on a DVDVHS recorder if you cant use it to actually record anything?
Shift to Vanns customer service.. I couldnt get through to Toshibas customer support, so I called Vanns and explained my problem. Literally within minutes I received an e-mail message with all of the details necessary to return the unit, AND a link to print a UPS return label. I repackaged the unit and dropped it off at a nearby UPS Store... about a week later, I received an e-mail notification that full refund had been credited to my account.
Im not sure if the unit was defective or if the s-video input is just useless for recording... either way, I couldnt be more pleased with Vanns!!!!

The instruction manual is complicated and not very user friendly.
It took me and my daughter about two weeks to figure out how to record on a VCR tape. I havent even tried recording on a DVD yet. It seems there are too many steps to go through. I am not the most technical person, but I think the manual should be easier to understand. There seems to be too many variables.

Records great on DVDs, no problems. Up converts regular DVDs to 1080p resolution, makes them look pretty good. When playing .avi movies, it has very limited fast forwarding capability. When you put a DVD in, it takes about a minute or so to read it, so it isnt very fast. At one time this would have cost about $100, but they have been selling more and more, so the prices have increased.

I have been looking for a while for the right DVD recorder . Here you have quality without breaking the bank. The bonus of one touch recording of old vhs tapes onto DVD was great. This unit has exhibited very good recording on LP settings and it has the flexibity of using DVD- and rewritable media. The unit has been easy to set-up and use. The only minor wish list item for the unit would be to have an easier way to manage timed recording so that hour-long shows or two hour movies could be more easily programed, ie.one touch affairs. While the audio is surprisingly good, I would like to have seen a more traditional 5.1 audio outputs. Still a strong performance by Toshiba for the price and it deserves a recommendation. After using this one for a few weeks, I bought one for my brother.

I ordered this unit on Friday night and received it at my door the following Thursday. Im a long way form Montana and the shipping was free.
I like the fact that there was no tax.
This product is awsome. It features one touch recording of live programming and vhs-dvd recording. I have been transferring vhs tapes of my children at sporting events when they were in high school. This is so easy, and the video quality is great. The D-VR620 also has upconversion capability for HD. I dont have an HD, but my next tv probably will be.
Ive had more expensive units that were also more complicated to operate. Other units I looked at had only a ninety day warranty and no extended warranty was offered. This unit has a one year warranty and offers the option of an extended warranty for up to five years. This is an excellent value. You cant go wrong.
