I had a Sony HDDDVD recorder in the past that I used extensively over the last 4 years. Recorded mostly movies from Directv. The old recorder died so rather than try to get it repaired I decided to purchase a new one since the prices are cheaper now. I bought this unit as I dont need a HDD. I wanted the LSP recording more especially to use with DVDR DL discs you can fit 2 movies on a disc with good picture quality. Sony is the only manufacturer I found with this recording mode. I also liked the reliability with Sony. Unfortunately I wasnt aware this unit will not allow recording movies from Directv satellite receiver or DVR from HBO,etc.The older Sony recorders would allow this. After a few seconds you get a message saying copy protected movies can not be recorded. If I would have known that before buying this unit I wouldnt have bought it. Thus the poor ratings. Other programs can be recorded. Other than that it seems to work fine and recording, etc. as my earlier unit.
