It's not just upgrading, it's upconversion . . . to 1080p
Don't worry, your purchase of a new flat panel HDTV doesn't mean "lights out" for your DVD collection. To the contrary. Your new XD-E600 DVD player from Toshiba lets you enjoy your favorite DVD in high resolution thanks to the combination of video upconversion and HDMI. Using advanced pixel-interpolation technology, the XD-E600 is able to convert standard 480i DVD video content up to 720p, 1080i or even 1080p resolutions, depending on the resolution of your HDTV. HDMI, or High Definition Multimedia Interface (described in detail below), delivers the expanded bandwidth capability necessary to transmit this upconverted, higher-resolution video data to your flatpanel.
Share your photos with all
Sure, you enjoy watching all your DVDs in near-HD resolution on your HDTV using the Toshiba XD-E600. But you'd like to be able to do more. In fact, what you'd really like to be able to do is use your HDTV to share all the digital photos from your latest adventure with your friends and family, using your big-screen HDTV as the gallery. Well, you're in luck. The XD-E600 combines JPEG Photo Viewer capability with a built-in, front-panel USB 2.0 port. Simply load your JPEG digital photos onto a USB thumbdrive, connect the drive to the XD-E600, and ta-da, you have a photo gallery that everyone can view at once.
DVD, Toshiba style
This single-disc DVD player from Toshiba delivers the versatility and performance power you seek in a home-theater component. The XD-E600 supports a variety of audio and video formats — from DVD-Video, DVD-/+RW DL, CD, WMA, MP3, and JPEG. Also, powerful video and audio digital-to-analog converters enhance your home entertainment experience with high-performance signal conversion.
Great video quality
If you don't have a television with HDMI, you'll still be able to enjoy pristine video reproduction. ColorStream Pro component video outputs allow the highest quality video signal to be sent from the XD-E600 to a component-video equipped progressive-scan TV. When this connection is utilized with today's HD-compatible sets, typical NTSC artifacts like video noise, dot crawl, and flicker are virtually eliminated, resulting in a low-noise, highly detailed picture with unequaled color purity. Digital Cinema Progressive (3:2 pulldown) uses frame interpolation to deliver smooth, film-like video reproduction on any progressive-scan television.
Realistic audio
In addition to all of its video capabilities, the XD-E600 also gives you some great audio options, including Dolby Digital and dts-compatible output. Connected to a compatible AC-3 receiver, Dolby Digital creates a multi-channel audio experience with unsurpassed three-dimensional audio performance rivaling the best movie theaters. And the XD-E600 features dts (Digital Theater Systems) compatibility. You can connect the XD-E600 to a dts-compatible receiver/decoder via its digital audio outputs for playback of high-resolution multi-channel dts-encoded DVDs and CDs. The recorder's 3-D Virtual Surround Sound feature provides a simulated surround-sound effect from sources that contain only a stereo soundtrack. This is convenient when playing older DVD films or for use with home theaters not equipped with multi-channel playback compatibility. This feature is also active via the headphone output jacks.
HDMI-CEC
When it comes to firing up your home entertainment system, faster is better. HDMI-CEC makes controlling multiple components quick and easy. Simply connect your XD-E600 player to compatible devices using an HDMI cable and you can control all connected devices with a single remote. No additional programming or setup is required!
The advanced connectivity of HDMI
Bringing you the absolute best in connectivity, Toshiba's XD-E600 features an HDMI connection. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the only interface in consumer electronics that can carry both uncompressed high-definition (HD) video and uncompressed multi-channel audio in all HD formats including 720p, 1080i and even 1080p. Your incoming media content comes in a variety of sizes, resolutions and formats, and with that in mind, HDMI systems automatically configure to display that content in the most effective format. Since HDMI carries all channels on video and audio, there is only one cable to plug into any HDMI-enabled source and display device. No more complicated cable set-up when installing your home theater system, and no more ugly cable mess behind your components. HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on this single cable.
Your HD lifeline
High Definition Multimedia Interface, or HDMI, is the only home A/V connection that allows for both Full HD 1080p video and 7.1-channel studio-quality audio to be passes along a single cable. In other words, in order to take full advantage of your home theater’s high definition potential, you need to HDMI cabling to link HD-capable components. It’s only natural that you might have questions regarding how best to outfit your personal HD system. Vann’s sales representatives are here to explain all of your options. I had an OPPO DV-981HD and that was a very good upconverting player but the audio was not that great considering the price. When the player went out, I bought this to hold me over till I could get a Harman Kardon since this player received good reviews. Well, I am sticking with this Toshiba because the Up Converting is very, very good and the audio is excellent. I cant tell a difference between the OPPO and this one picture quality wise and the audio on the Toshiba is better than the OPPO. I am really impressed with this player. Even scratched up DVDs from Netflix play perfect. I tested out many players costing way more than the $60.00 I paid for this and you will not find a better player for the price and even players costing almost $300.00 did not beat this player out. The best player by far for under $200.00 and you can get it here for only $60.00 ! What a steal !! The only small detail that may turn buyers off is that there is no front timer display. You have to hit display on the remote to see the timer. No problem for me, less of a distraction. I highly recommend this player for DVDs.

I havent tried the upscaling feature because I still have the old style low res TV. My former DVD player stopped working so I replaced it with this, with the assumption I would have a high res TV in the near future.
It is my impression that this player can read DVDs that would have been problematic for its predecessor, and the image seems sharper. So far I am very happy. Ive had the XDE600 for about a month.

I bought this one on a whim just to try out the extended detail enhancement feature. Of the three Sharp, Color, Contrast Sharp worked very well. I have a properly calibrated set, so the other two were pretty much of no use. On newer films Sharp added just the right amount of sharpness to scenes without additional halos or other edge enhancement artifacts the better the films cinematography the better it works. With older 43 aspect films or non-HD TV shows from the 90s the image is stretch and there is nothing I can do to fix it. My Panasonic TV cant adjust for it it just sees a 1080i image coming from the player and keeps it in its normal state. The build quality of the unit is very light. The case of the player feels like a tin can and the remote is as tiny and lightweight as a childs toy. The buttons are very small and unintuitive.
Again, for what its basic purpose is DVD upscaled playback, it does a great job on 169 widescreen material, particularly with Sharp enabled. The image quality rivals at times the Oppo DV-980H no joke and is slightly better than the Pioneer Elite DV-49AV. I wished Toshiba had chosen to put the XDE feature into a more quality player from a feature and build standpoint. It would have a real winner then - even at another say, $50 for that quality.
Edit Well, after a week or so of ownership I feel I was a bit too harsh on the XDE-600, so I bumped the rating up to four stars. The image quality is so good for the low price that I can overlook the deficiencies. Plus I found a work-around of sorts for the 43 aspect problem. Set the HDMI resolution to 480p in the player and it will display in the proper aspect ratio on the TV. The only snag is that the XDE settings wont work in anything but 1080p, but since they are mostly older movies that use that format I can live with it.

The spec sheet can give you all the details that compare features of this DVD player and others. None of that means much if the picture is not visibly better. I needed an upconverting DVD player because I have many DVDs that came out before HD DVDs were available, also I occasionally rent a standard definition DVD. Quite simply, I want my older DVDs to look their best on my 1080p television.I have tried several other upconverting players, the Toshiba XDE viewing experience is far better than other upconverting methods. The quality of viewing for standard definition DVDs is even better than when I played them in my BD player. The bottom line... If you play standard definition DVDs this player will get you the most quality of viewing available at an unrivaled 24 frames per second.

Excellent value product, best bang for the buck! If you have an older TV, this DVD player supports S-Video and Composite connections and has a HDMI port for when you upgrade to HD. The USB port is where all the magic is, with Divx support you can play downloaded content in either Divx or XviD format right off a USB thumb drive! Complete with subtitle support! The only reason I give this a 4 for ease of use is due to the fact that the remote control does not have very convenient placed buttons and could be easier to use. Another note - overall rating gets a 4 due to when used on HD compatible displays this DVD player will not stretch 4x3 DVD content to 16x9, you will need a HDTV that has this capability built-in or 4x3 content will play with a black bars surrounding the picture, but fine if the source DVD is 16x9.

I recently purchased a Toshiba 46 LCD TV and needed a decent DVD player to go with it. After doing some on line research, I found the Toshiba XDE600. It sounded like a good match. The outside plastic case matched the frame of the TV.
It took only minutes to connect to start watching DVDs. The other feature I like was the USB connection. I will allow my to review my photographs on my TV. For this Christmas get together, I plan on making an on going slide show of the different places I have been this year. It only took a few seconds to figure out how to work that feature. The DVD player arrived well packaged and arrived on time.
