Comfortable viewing from any angle in any lighting
The large 8.5" widescreen display on the DVDLS86 pivots for free-style viewing so you can adjust the position for optimum comfort and image quality. You can also adjust the screen brightness to get the best view of your DVDs in all kinds of light conditions. You get beautiful images while watching movies on a dimly lit airplane, or when you're relaxing in the sun at a resort or other outdoor spot.

When you're in the mood for a movie, the versatile DVDLS86 can play back many different types of prerecorded DVDs, including DVD-RAM/-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW discs. If you want to give your eyes a rest and listen to some tunes instead, this portable DVD player handles lots of the most popular audio formats around, including CDs, MP3s, CD-R/RW discs, and WMA files.

Received the Panasonic portable DVD player three weeks ago. Have used it quite a few times and am very pleased with the sound quality. The battery life is excellent compared to others on the market. Maybe not the full 13 hours but closer to 9 hours with full brightness. With the available car AC adapter you are never too far from a power source. No matter if you are traveling by plane, car or train, I believe the player will definitely be a handy travel mate. The 8.5 LCD screen can be viewed from many angles which is a great plus. Have used other portable players on a few train trips and had to hold them just right on a bumpy ride to see the movie.

After owning CyberHome and Philips portable DVD players for a few years, I was getting tired of always having to compromise either on picture quality, speaker quality, battery life, and format compatibility. So I decided to look elsewhere. It became a tossup between the Panasonic DVD LS86, Sony DVP-FX820, and Toshiba SD-P101. I read that the Sony is weak on volume and will not play DTS soundtracks through the internal speakers or the analog outputs. I was so sure about the Toshiba, but I purchased one and tried it out, only to discover that its movie playback wasnt loud enough, nor did it play DTS soundtracks. I exchanged it for the Panasonic. This meant that the Panasonic DVD-LS86 was my only hope. When it arived, I put it through my usual audiovideo tests. Id say its the best portable DVD player Ive ever owned so far.
As I unpacked the player, I was surprised at its physical characteristics, in that it is thin, plastic, yet rugged. I know it sounds like an oximoron, but once you start using this player, youll understand. Unlike other portable DVD players I have used, its battery does not protrude from the bottom, making it comfortable to handle. The coolest physical aspect of this player is that once you have your disc loaded and playing, its screen can close two ways. When closed screenside down, it can be used with external hardware such as a stereo or TV set. When closed screenside up, this makes the player smaller for use while walking. Also, it slightly slants upwards, providing fair movie viewing when the player is placed on a flat surface.
Now that were on the subject of movie viewing, lets look at its video features. The display has three brightness settings, DAYLIGHT, USER, and MOONLIGHT. These settings are actually adjusting the LCDs backlight level. There are pros and cons no matter how you adjust backlighting. Higher backlighting results in a picture ritch in color, yet reduces the battery life down to six hours once fully charged. Lower backlighting results in deeper blacks, and provides up to thirteen hours once fully charged. It all comes down to a compromise on battery life and picture quality. I prefer the DAYLIGHT setting, and the higher contrast resulting from the Cinema2 setting in the Video Menu.
On the audio side of things, this is the best I have found in a portable DVD player. The tone quality from its internal speakers is between that of many portable DVD players and laptop computers. More important, this portable DVD player is the loudest Ive ever used. When outside in the open air, there is nothing immediatly close to the listener for the sound to reverberate off of. That is why higher volume is necessary.
Some DVD movies have a DTS audio soundtrack in addition to Dolby Digital. This method of digital audio storage provides better sound quality and dynamic range. Not many portables play DTS soundtracks through their internal speakers. This player is unique, and has the ability to do so.
If all of the above isnt enough, a nice bonus feature is the option to turn off the picture and still have sound from the internal speakers while the screen is open or closed screenside up. Less portable DVD players have this ability nowadays. This provides a record breaking sixteen hours of battery life once fully charged.
So, if you are looking for a portable DVD player which goes that extra mile, then consider the Panasonic DVD-LS86 as your traveling companion. And to make purchasing this product the best experience, be sure to purchase it here at Vanns for a good price so you may obtain Panasonic warranty service.
