The Sony-BDP-S300 is a very user friendly machine.I had owned the toshiba hd-a30,it was very slow compared to the sony,also the remote control is easy to navigate. The set-up of the sony was a breeze,basically you plug and play.The picure and sound is fantastic,the upconvert on the sony is unbeatable.The support from sony are first rate. I would recommend the BDP-S300,I cant wait to get a hdmi reciver to go with the sony to enjoy all the cool audio features.

Finally got the gift of all Christmas gifts! Thanks Mom!! Got this hooked up to my Sony 50 SXRD projection TV. First time I got a true chance to see what a true HD picture should be. Simple to hook up through the HDMI to my TV. My receiver does not like the coax digital signal from it but that is due to the age of my receiver. Once i upgrade that i can get a good chance to hear what the uncompressed dolby sounds like. Yes it does take a minute to power on, but this is bacically a computer so calm down and wait. Yes it has upgrades to the Java but again, calm down it does not take that long. Watched a few normal dvds on it and the up conversion is great. If your looking for a good entry to the HD world, I would recommend this any time.

Sony BDP-S300 Freeze up?

I recently purchased the Sony BDP-S300 Blue Ray Disc Player from Vanns. I just returned it after 2 very frustrating weeks. The first few movies I tried to play, after waiting what seemed like an eternity for the player to load, would just freeze up, or skip ahead. This made trying to follow the movie VERY FRUSTRATING!!! I called Vanns, and they were great. They suggested I call Sony directly. So, I did. Sony had me download the latest updates from their website, and install them. This did not help. Next, I thought it was maybe the HDMI cable, so I shelled out another $40 for a new cable. This seemed to help. So, this past weekend we went out and rented a bunch of blu-ray videos. Again, the movies would freeze, or skip ahead. I called Vanns and made arangements to return this piece of garbage!!! If you are smarter than me, DO NOT buy this machine!!! It should never have been marketed to the general public. My faith in Sony is shaken. However, I still love the service at Vanns, and will continue to buy all of my electronics from them.
