BD-Live: beyond the disc
We understand; this might be difficult to believe. But there is even more to the Blu-ray Disc home theater experience than high-realism full HD 1080p video and startling 7.1-channel uncompressed surround sound. Like BD-Live, for example. In combination with the Pioneer BDP-320's 1GB of built-in memory and ethernet port, BD-Live lets you discover a whole new dimension of the Blu-ray experience. BD-Live is the interactive component of the Blu-ray Disc format that gives you the opportunity to download and enjoy bonus trailers and movie features, participate in online gaming, as well as synchronize viewing, chat live, and video message with other BD-Live users. Because the BDP-320 features built-in memory, you're ready to take advantage of BD-Live functionality right out of the box (with an existing internet connection and BD-Live-compatible disc). Use the integrated USB 2.0 port to connect additional memory devices like thumb drives or external hard drives to expand your BD-Live storage capacity. Not only can the ethernet port be used to access online BD-Live content, but it also serves to give you access to online firmware updates for the BDP-320, keeping you on the cutting edge of the Blu-ray Disc experience.
Uh, Toto, I don' think we're seeing DVD anymore
Upon her visit to the Wizard's city, everything that Dorothy and her companions saw was emerald-hued due to the green-tinted spectacles they all were required to wear during their stay. While in Oz farce was at play, in your home theater, the true 1080p high definition video experience offered by Blu-ray Disc is a real as the picture is lifelike, this time thanks to Blu-ray's unique blue-violet laser technology. Because the laser used to read Blu-ray Disc is finer than the red laser used by DVD, Blu-ray is capable of storing more than five times the amount of information as DVD. Big deal? Oh yea, big deal. This expanded storage capacity makes it possible to place not only full HD 1080p video features on the disc, but also 7.1-channel uncompressed audio and enhanced commentary and picture-in-picture viewing capability. In other words: a home video experience previously unthinkable with DVD. And when it comes to the experience offered by the Pioneer BDP-320 Blu-ray Disc player, this is only the beginning.
As the director intended
For the optimal high definition Blu-ray video experience at home, the BDP-320 features True24fps capability. Because all your favorite movies are filmed at 24 frames-per-second (fps) while most home video systems are equipped to display video at 30fps, most standard systems have to subject film-based video content to alterations that make the 24fps content display at 30fps. While this solves the problem, it also causes others — this alteration often results in the appearance of artifacts, or distortion of the video image. True24fsp capability, on the other hand, offers processing that seamlessly transfers the 24fps content on your favorite Blu-ray movie to your 24fsp-compatible HDTV. Video as the director intended. Further, a PureCinema deinterlacer advances interlaced-scanned video from broadcast TV or DVD to smooth progressive-scan video.
Hear no evil
Ok, well, it's all fine and dandy that Blu-ray Disc is capable of storing 7.1 channels of uncompressed audio for a true home surround sound experience. But . . . to enjoy 7.1 channels of clear, crisp, lifelike surround sound audio, you need a system that's going to read and transmit that audio faithfully and accurately. Dolby Digital TrueHD and dts-HD audio decoding processing deliver the most advanced, high-performance audio decoding currently available, giving Blu-ray Disc's uncompressed audio its true expression. Further, for CD audio, PQLS jitter-free audio transmission is attainable when the BDP-320 is connected to an Elite receiver (SC-05 or SC-07).
Another word on video
Pioneer's BDP-320 also takes a few extra measures to assure that the video that ultimately reaches your HDTV is as stunning as possible. A Picture Control Suite offers 13 different video adjustments, including Progressive Motion, PureCimena, Detail, White Level, Black Level, Gamma Correction, Hue, and Chroma Level. Also, three different noise-reduction circuits dramatically improve the video signal by removing common sources of error. Based on a pixel-per-pixel basis, 3D Noise Reduction reduces Gaussian Noise without blurring the image. Block and Mosquito Noise Reduction, on the other hand, enhance poorly created content for sharp, detailed video from any source. Finally, BonusView Support allows for viewing of independent high definition simultaneous video streams. This means that your can watch your favorite Blu-ray movie while also watching bonus features at the same time.
HDMIncredible
Bringing you the absolute best in connectivity, Pioneer's BDP-320 features one HDMI output. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the only interface in consumer electronics that can carry both uncompressed high-definition (HD) video and uncompressed multi-channel audio in all HD formats including 720p, 1080i and even 1080p. Your incoming media content comes in a variety of sizes, resolutions and formats, and with that in mind, HDMI systems automatically configure to display that content in the most effective format. Since HDMI carries all channels on video and audio, there is only one cable to plug into any HDMI-enabled source and display device. No more complicated cable set-up when installing your home theater system, and no more ugly cable mess behind your components. HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on this single cable. Also, HDMI is fully backward-compatible with DVI. (Please note that a physical adapter, sold separately, is needed to make the conversion from HDMI to DVI.)
Your HD lifeline
High Definition Multimedia Interface, or HDMI, is the only home A/V connection that allows for both Full HD 1080p video and 7.1-channel studio-quality audio to be passes along a single cable. In other words, in order to take full advantage of your home theater’s high definition potential, you need to HDMI cabling to link HD-capable components. It’s only natural that you might have questions regarding how best to outfit your personal HD system. Vann’s sales representatives are here to explain all of your options. This player has excellent picture and sound. Noticeably better than the PS3 and Panasonic that I have owned. The down side of this is that it is extremely slow to load and has frequent hdmi handshake issues when loading a movie. Once you get the movie loaded you will be in for a treat. DVD performance seems to be on the same par with most bluray players. Doing firmware updates via the internet can be an excercise in frustration, however you can order a disc from Pioneer that seems to work fine. All in all if you dont mind waiting you will be rewarded with a great movie experience.

I was looking forward to enjoying Blu-Ray on my new Panasonic plasma TV, and I was not disappointed. The picture quality is outstanding. The startup menus are logicaly laid out, and setup was a breaze. The only issue that I have had is that it takes a LONG time to load up once the Blu Disk is inserted. I havent done a firmware update yet, and according to some reviews that I have read the update helps with loading times. The only criticism that I have is that the buttons on the remote control are a bit on the small side and kind of hard to see in low light movie viewing situations.
