Et tu, Blu-ray?
Not long ago, during the days of the Standard Definition empire, DVD ruled far and wide. But now a revolution has taken place — the High Definition revolution&ensp— and there's a new emperor in town. By simply using a narrow blue-violet laser to read and encode information onto an optical disc, Blu-ray Disc is able to offer over five times the storage capacity of DVD, which uses a wider, red laser. This greatly augmented storage capacity makes it possible for Blu-ray Disc to store both full high definition 1080p video and 7.1-channel, lossless HD audio for a complete high definition home theater experience. Further, there's still storage space left over for a wide range of bonus features available only on Blu-ray Disc. Think enhanced commentary and picture-in-picture viewing. With the Sharp BDHP22U seamlessly integrated into your home theater system via its diverse A/V connectivity options and ability to decode Dolby® TrueHD audio, you are ready to experience true HD home theater.
Blu-ray . . . in 10
Most Blu-ray Disc players have slow start-up times that leave you twiddling your thumbs in anticipation of the main feature. Sharp's BDHP22U, on the other hand, sports a proprietary Sharp technology that lets you begin viewing your favorite high definition Blu-ray video in as little as 10 seconds. You've got time to dash to the kitchen for more popcorn salt before the movie begins, but that's about all.
DVD, only better
Just because Blu-ray Disc is the new kid on the block, that doesn't mean you have to abandon your DVD collection to a suitcase stored under your bed. With built-in DVD upscaling, the BDHP22U automatically enhances the resolution of your favorite DVDs to 1080p via HDMI. Discover new life in your DVD collection.
This BD player's got connections
For optimal integration into your home theater system, any new component must have two things. First, support for a wide variety of audio and video formats. Second, a diverse set of A/V connections. The Sharp BDHP21U scores two. First, this single-disc Blu-ray player supports a variety of Blu-ray Disc, DVD, and CD formats, including BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE, DVD Video, DVD-RW/R, DVD+RW/R / CD-DA, CD-RW/R, and JPEG-CD-RW/R. Second, the BDHP21U sports a wide range of audio and video outputs, including one HDMI, one HD component-video, one composite video, one digital optical audio, and one analog audio.
HDMI: advanced connectivity
Bringing you the absolute best in connectivity, Sharp's BDHP22U features one HDMI output. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the only interface in consumer electronics that can carry both uncompressed high-definition (HD) video and uncompressed multi-channel audio in all HD formats including 720p, 1080i, and even 1080p. Your incoming media content comes in a variety of sizes, resolutions and formats, and with that in mind, HDMI systems automatically configure to display that content in the most effective format. Since HDMI carries all channels on video and audio, there is only one cable to plug into any HDMI-enabled source and display device. No more complicated cable set-up when installing your home theater system, and no more ugly cable mess behind your components. HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on this single cable. Also, HDMI is fully backward-compatible with DVI. (Please note that a physical adapter, sold separately, is needed to make the conversion from HDMI to DVI.)
Get yer cables!
The advent of HDMI has been monumental in the advancement of all your favorite audio and video gadgets. Don't miss out on all that your new BDHP22U offers — in terms of high definition audio and video connectivity — by leaving a set of HDMI cables off the list. Vann's sales representatives are here to explain all your options, so you can make the best purchase and get the most out of your HD system. Let me say first that Im a newbie with Blu-Ray DVD players. This is the first one I have had.
I cant be too specific, therefore, with comments on specs, or features. But, I can say that this Sharp player definitely provides a terrific display of both standard and Blu-Ray DVDs. The lag time from first inserting the disc to the player reading it for playing seems just a bit longer than standard DVD players, but not overly long. I have experienced no skips or hesitations with it .
Hooking it up with an HDMI cable was a snap, although the HDMI cable wasnot provided with the unit only RCA cables were provided, so if you want to use HDMI, youll have to purchase the cable separately.
If I had any negatives to say, it would be only that the unit is wider than any other DVD player Ive owned in the past, but it does fit into the space where my previous player sat, barely. My advice to you is to check the dimensions of the space youre planning to put the player with the dimensions of the player itself. Other than that, I think its an excellent unit.
