Five! Shot-enhancing technologies
Take every shot with confidence. Intelligent Auto mode places five technologies under your control that help you snap shots free of common shooting-errors. Intelligent Exposure corrects lighting differences so images come out just the way you see them. The DMC-ZS1's broad list of Scene modes — including Portrait, Soft Skin, Scenery, Sports, Night Portrait, Self-Portrait, Food, Party, Candle Light, Fireworks, Snow, and Sunset — might seem daunting, but the Intelligent Scene Selector makes things easy by choosing the mode that best fits each situation for you. When the excitement of the shot makes you a little unsteady, MEGA Optical Image Stabilization reduces blurring caused by hand shake. Motion blur that might otherwise occur when shooting moving subjects is reduced by Intelligent ISO Control. Finally, when you're taking pictures of friends and family, Face Detection helps produce clear portraits by optimizing focus and exposure settings.
LEICA 25mm wide-angle lens with 12x optical zoom
Now you can fit sweeping landscapes into a single frame with the 25mm wide-angle setting. Pull in subjects from far away to capture even subtle facial expressions with the dynamic 300mm telephoto setting. Ideal for traveling, the DMC-ZS1K Lumix 10.1-megapixel digital camera combines a wide-ranging LEICA DC Vario-Elmar lens with a handy, compact body. The Extra Optical Zoom function also extends the zoom to as much as 21.4x, giving you even greater telephoto power.
iA mode: Worry about the shot, not the scene mode
Just set the camera to iA mode, aim, and shoot. The camera does all the rest. It automatically determines the most suitable Scene mode and helps correct blurring, focus, and brightness problems. With iA mode, it's easy to get beautiful, clear results. Note: In the ZS1, iA mode cannot be used when shooting motion images.
Whoa, steady now . . . One more word on O.I.S.
Get ready to bid camera-shake blur adieu. Whether you enjoy shooting pristine landscapes, wildlife, sports or candid moments at gatherings with friends, the excitement of the shot can get to even the most seasoned of photographers, putting even just a teeny shake in an otherwise steady hand. The unfortunate result? Blurry memories and fuzzy moments. Enter Panasonic's MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer, featured on the DMC-ZS1K digital camera. A built-in gyrosensor detects any hand movement during a shot, and then sends a signal to the camera's microcomputer. After calculating the necessary compensation, the microcomputer shifts the optical image stabilizer to guide the incoming light from the subject directly and cleanly to the CCD image sensor. You get all of your DMC-ZS1K's 10.1 megapixels devoted to sharp, clear detail and not to blur and fuzz.
Composing, reviewing, and sharing each shot is easy
Many digital cameras — including your new DMC-ZS1K — use an LCD screen on the back of the camera as the viewfinder for composing shots. By automatically adjusting its brightness as ambient light conditions change, the DMC-ZS1K's wide 2.7" LCD screen gives you a clear view of each shot you compose, and is ideal for reviewing shots right after you've taken them, or for sharing images with friends.
A professional technique made automatic
Seasoned and novice photographers, alike, use a technique called bracketing both as a learning tool and to help guarantee that they don't miss the perfect shot. Bracketing is simple — photographers simply take three or four photographs in succession, slightly changing the exposure settings for each shot to ensure that the right exposure is given. The DMC-ZS1K's Auto Bracketing mode automatically takes multiple pictures with a single press of the shutter, each using a different exposure. Review all the images after the shot and keep the best one.
Don't let fast subjects slow you down
Whether it's a break-away play at your child's hockey game, or wildlife darting through the trees, fast-moving subjects usually don't give you a chance to take more than one shot. Take between 2.5 and 6 shots-per-second (depending on resolution) with the DMC-ZS1K's High-Speed Burst mode. You just got a whole lot better at catching that perfect action shot.
Special travel functions for the perfect trip
The Clipboard allows you to take photos of maps, timetables, and other travel info. These images are saved in a separate folder of the DMC-ZS1K's built-in memory to distinguish them from normal photos. You can print titles and other characters on the photos you shoot with the Title Edit and Stamp function. This is great for creating your own postcards from a vacation trip. Input your departure date and destination with the Travel Date Setting. Later, during photo viewing, the camera will indicate on which day of the trip each shot was taken and the location.

The image stabilization allows me to take pictures at 60 miles an hour with perfect quality! Since most of our photos are the scenery we pass along the highway, we needed a simple camera like this. We are sold on this Panasonic~!

I have only owned this camera for a short time and taken few pictures. However, what I was looking for was something that takes sharp photos, had a great zoom, and was small and compact and not too expensive. This camera fits the bill 100. With the 12X optical zoom I think it will work very well on my many travels to take more closely zoomed in photos of the local attractions. Ive taken both indoor and outdoor photos and Im very satisfied.

All in all, I cant say enough about this camera - one of the best purchases I ever made.

In 2007 I bought a Panasonic DMC-TZ3 digital camera and have been quite satisfied with its performance as a wide-angle and zoom camera which will fit in a pocket. When my daughter requested a nice zoom camera for Christmas, I immediately thought of a similar Panasonic. After a lot of research and price comparisons, I settled on the DMC-ZS1S at Vanns. Her camera has a 12X zoom and 25mm wide-angle capability compared to my cameras 10X zoom and 28mm wide angle. Among the host of improvements offered by the DMC-ZS1S, there is a delightful feature which makes it possible to slenderize a persons physique.
What more could anyone ask of a camera? My daughter is totally satisfied and I am totally jealous.

I bought this camara to take on a trip to Egypt. With 12x optical zoom and a 25 mm wide angle lens, it was just the camera I needed. With its very easy to use intellegent auto setting setting, all I had to do aim and shoot. In dark places, like the interior of a temple, the camera was able to take great shots of the wall carvings without the flash. The only complaint I have is that in bright outdoor situations, its hard to see the image on the screen. Bottom line is that not being a camera person and wanting a camera that takes good pictures without muss or fuss, this camera fills the bill.

Areas of improvement
I would rather zoom with a ring on the lens.
Too many button presses to reformat the card.
A momentary button press to view photos instead of a switch that is often forgotten in the wrong position to take the next shot.

This is an excellent P&S camera. It is easy to use and produces very good images.
But the real reason for this review is to praise Vanns customer service for this camera.
I bought the camera as my sisters Christmas present. Unfortunately, she waited another month to use it, and when she opened it, the battery or battery charger were missing.
So, more than two months after purchase, I called Vanns to see if anything could be done. Shauna could not have been nicer or more helpful. She called Panasonic, who refused to help because it was outside the two month return deadline. So Shauna promised us a new battery and charger anyway, straight from Vanns, no charge. Unfortunately, the people in shipping forgot to include the charger, but I was so happy to get the battery that I did not care. Chargers are pretty cheap-- the battery was expensive!
My sister is happy with her camera, and I am happy with Vanns customer service. Shauna was so nice and helpful, and she really cared about helping us when Panasonic would not.

This Panasonic digital camera was purchased as a replacement for my previous DMC-TZ5. The older model performed perfectly until my dogs ATE it! Knowing the quality and performance of the Panasonic series with the Leica lens prompted a similar but upgraded product. The newer model, DMC-ZS1, upgrades to a 12x optical zoom, 10.1 megapixels, 25mm wide angle and a 2.7 LCD. Its ability to track and focus on moving subjects, shake, motion, face, scene and light detection, makes this camera a perfect choice for anyone with various levels of photographic proficiency. The Lecia lens produces the sharpest photos I have ever taken. It is lightweight, a perfect size, and provides all the bells and whistles one could want!

The camera has so far met or exceeded my expectations. I was looking for a high quality small digi so as not to carry around something larger like an SLR. I also didnt want to spend crazy much. On both accounts the Lumix came through. Im still discovering more features, but the ones used most often are very easy to operate. Pic quality is excellent and shutter drag is much improved over my last model. Battery is very efficient and doesnt need recharging very often even after long shoots. Ive compared it to a couple others in the same price range that friends have, and am pleased that I made the best choice.
