Tiny is their big deal

A big, rich sound is every audiophile's quest. A small delivery system is every home decorator's demand. And the Cambridge Audio S325 Minx Home Theater System is the bridge between sound and size. The Min20 satellites are slightly larger than a dollar bill, and the X300 sub-woofer is less than one foot square. So obviously, the Cambridge Audio S325 speakers don't visually dominate the room, so how do they dominate it sonically?

The secrets in the box

Cambridge Audio took over two years to get the design right in the Minx Speakers, and you can hear it. The Min20 speakers use BMR technology, which combines two different driver designs to create a deeper, fuller sound. BMR begins with a honeycomb sandwich membrane in their cone design. Cambridge Audio has combined the "bending wave" principles, used with flat panel speakers, to define the highs, and a classic pistonic movement to define the mid-range. The honeycomb membrane is what allows this radical combination of piston and bending mode radiator, and allows the 2 drivers of the Min20 speakers to create filling highs and a complex midrange. Like all great speakers, the housing is just as critical to the sound, and receives as much attention as the interior. The machined aluminum extrusion provides a solid mechanical ground for the BMR Driver, while the acoustically damped thermo polymer cabinet is extremely rigid to secure the aluminum extrusion and enhance the sound.

Little cloud, big thunder

The X300 sub-woofer packs a lot of wallop into less than one square foot of space. It uses a digital 300W amplifier to drive a forward thrusting 8" sub-woofer with an downward facing 8" Auxiliary Bass Radiator. 300W may sound big to power an 8" driver, but that's the trick. The 8" driver is made of fairly rigid aluminum, and requires a bit of power to drive it. But when that driver moves, it moves with authority, powerfully moving air and making a roar totally at odds with its diminutive footprint. The X300 also uses a sophisticated Digital Signal Processor that's designed to enhance the small size of the X300, boosting the signal for a fuller sound.

The biggest trouble with mini systems is the mid range. It's easy to get highs and lows, but tough to find that middle ground. Cambridge Audio has worked hard to make that easy, starting with the BMR technology that fattens up the mid-range with their honeycomb membrane and tight speaker design. But the real magic comes from the X300 sub-woofer. With full rear panel control of gain, phase and crossover frequency, from 50Hz to 200Hz, you can set the sub-woofer to fill in the low mids, customizing your sound for the room and your enjoyment. The smaller driver accurately replicates beefier mids without sacrificing the power of the bass. Hey, that's what 300W will do for you.
