Receiver of Respect

The engineers at Denon go out of their way to make sure every Denon receiver delivers the absolute best sound. The AVR487 is certainly no exception. Its chassis is designed to absorb vibration, supporting its large transformer inside a highly rigid frame to secure it more solidly. In addition, a cushioning material is used around the core of the transformer to minimize interference on the signal and allow more faithful reproduction of the original sound. A Twin Drive Rectifier design brings out the maximum potential of this large transformer. Since the rectifiers recharge the large block capacitors at low impedance, they are able to supply ample current to accurately reproduce deep bass as well as sudden bursts of sound. A large heatsink made of extruded aluminum is placed in a design that ensures mostly uniform temperatures so that the output transistors for all channels can be driven under the same conditions. This ensures that all channels respond with equal performance to the demands of the audio signals. The aluminum face plate, in addition to looking great, also helps with the reduction of unwanted noise. As you can see, the design of a Denon receiver makes it the perfect home for its high quality amps and converters.

Not only does this system's DVD player (DVD557) play multiple formats (DVD, CD, DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW including MP3, WMA, JPEG, Kodak Picture CD), it does it in high fashion with progressive scan technology. Progressive scan can process around twice as much video data to produce a sharper, noise-free picture with finer details. High-definition video images are faithfully displayed with optimum naturalness and beauty. High resolution audio and video D/A converters also ensure a quality picture, and digital audio outputs provide a smooth path for Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks. For fine tuning, you can adjust several aspects of the picture, including brightness, contrast, color and sharpness.

HDMI Output (480p/720p/1080i)

HDMI is the only interface in consumer electronics that can carry both uncompressed high-definition (HD) video and uncompressed multi-channel audio in all HD formats including 720p, 1080i and even 1080p. An all-digital, uncompressed signal translates into the highest quality video and audio, seen and heard, direct from the source. The DVD557's scaling circuit supports up to 1080i. So if you have a television with an HDMI input, take advantage of this system's compatibility and enjoy the highest quality of digital signal transfer.

The Power of Authority

For optimum Dolby Digital and DTS reproduction, the AVR487 features high quality, wideband audio amplification, providing 110 watts of power output (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.7 percent THD) for each of the five main channel speakers. A large capacity power supply includes a high current power transformer along with discrete power output devices on all five amplifier channels for the highest dynamic range and superb reproduction clarity. The power amp circuits of the AVR487 have been meticulously designed to reproduce exceptionally high sound quality with a wide frequency response from 10 Hz to 100 kHz.

Additional Options

iPod playback can be enjoyed through the DHT487DV system when thte ASD1R, Denon's original Control Dock for iPod (sold separately), is connected to the dedicated control terminal of the AVR487. The iPod can also be controlled via the remote controller supplied with the AVR487. The optional Control Dock works with 3rd-generation and later iPods equipped with a Dock connector. The DHT487 system is also XM Mini-Tuner ready. With an optional XM Mini-Tuner and XM Satellite radio subscriptions, you can enjoy this exciting entertainment option through your new surround sound system. The tuner supports XM 5.1-channel surround powered by Neural Audio.

First, about shopping at Vanns. This was my third purchase from the company and each time the order has been handled very efficiently...and at very competitive prices.

As for the Denon DHT-487DV, this system was purchased to replace a very old Philips home theater system and what a difference! I did use monster cable for the speakers rather than utilize the wires that came with the package and the sound is incredible. Voices are crisp and music outstanding even at the initial default configurations.

The setup was relatively easy on my Hitachi 43 television but learning all the various configurations and sound options on the Denon system will definitely take some time. There are no shortages of things to try and I credit Denon with creating such a versatile product and what appears thus far to be a complete manual.

At this point, I give both Vanns and the Denon DHT-487DV a rating of 5.
