I recently moved to a small condo to live and I was looking for a small 2.1 home theater audio system. After comparing all the different systems available I decided that I wanted the Panasonic SA-PTX7.
The main reasons that I liked this particular model are HDMI output, upconverting DVD player, optical digital input and output, and AM-FM-XM satellite ready. There is a built in Hard drive to store up to 80GB of music such as MP3, Windows Media, or uncompressed, plus JPEG images. It is not however able to record any types of video. The remote control that comes with this unit can also control certain TVs and is able to adjust power on-off, volume, and input selection.
The unit was easy to setup and I had everything working in less than an hour. The speaker wires each have a unique color coded plug so it is impossible to make a mistake connecting them. The length of the wire is fixed, so this might create a problem if you want to spread them out a great distance, but it is around 6 - 8 feet on each speaker. There is a network connection so you can connect the receiver to your Internet router so it can download the lastest Gracenote updates for your CDs and also so it can connect to your computer to download music to the hard drive. In addition to the network connection it is also possible to store CDs directly on the hard drive from the built in DVD-CD drive at 4 times speed.
The unit has excellent video quality on DVDs and the stereo and virtual dolby surround audio are very good for this size of system. The highs are acceptable and the bass is excellent - the virtual surround is not as good as a 5.1 system, but if you dont have room or want speakers all around your room this is probably the best you are going to get. The volume goes very loud without distortion and is easily able to shake the walls. All the functions are easy to operate and there is a well organized on screen menu so you can always tell what you are doing.
One other feature some users will like is the included IPOD dock that is able to charge and play your IPOD through the audio system. It is a high quailty dock and is able to connect to several versions of Apple ipods. If you dont have an IPOD you can leave the dock disconnected as it plugs in the back of the receiver.
The only features that I really missed was built in HDMI switching for other video devices such as HD DVD players or video games. There is not a video or HDMI input at all. You will have to use your TV or an external switcher to select other video sources. I just used my TV and it works fine - just make sure your TV has the right inputs and enough of them for all your devices. Also it is important to connect the Panasonic SA-PTX7 to your TV throught the HDMI output so you can upconvert the video on your DVDs - the upconverion does not work on the component video outputs as is typical with most upconversion players. It really does make standard definition DVDs look much better. If you want to use XM satellite radio you will need to buy an external XM connect and play antenna. These are not very expensive and look very similar to a standard XM antenna. The unit I used was the Audiovox CNP1000. The only other thing some users may not like is that when powering up the system it takes 45 - 60 seconds to boot up. It is possible to select quick start from the menu and it is much quicker, but power consumption increases when the unit is off as I assume the hard drive keeps running.
Some users on the Internet state that this unit locks up frequently. In over a month mine has never locked up, so it is very possible Panasonic has resolved this problem.
I am very pleased with the Panasonic SA-PTX7 and the service that I received from Vanns. My order was shipped very quickly and Vanns had the best price by several hundred dollars that I could find on the Internet or at any local store for this unit - and free shipping and no sales tax too!. This is a unit worth considering if you want a compact and great sounding home theater system.
