| This is a great sounding system! I have friends that spent alot more on a home theater system that sounds about half as good! The only drawback to this home theater in a box, is that it ships all in one 150 lb. box. |

While searching for a good HTIB for our new home, we were looking at the Onkyo HT-S790B [because of its good ratings] and found this system. Yes, it is twice the price, but when you open the box and take out the speakers, you will understand why the box weighs over 140lbs. We bought one 790 and one 990 [one for the great room and one for the Family Room].
These are not cheap, lightweight speakers [30 percent heavier than the 790]. They all have substance, but more importantly, they deliver sound. The surround speakers are not an afterthought, but truly are a part of this system. All the speakers have binding posts rather than cheaper wire clamps. The only disappointment was the inclusion of 22AWG speaker wire. We replaced with 16AWG and life was really good!
The system was very easy to set up. We had it running in less than two hours. We immediately put in one of the Star Wars movies to test the THX sound. We didnt need to turn up the sound very far before we felt like we were a part of the movie. The thing we noticed was that you didnt really perceive where each speaker was positioned - the sound enveloped the room. Conversations on the screen appearded to be coming from the screen. And the surround effects made you think something was flying around you.
Our final comment is regarding Vanns.com - their site is wonderful. The ordering was easy. The shipping was quick - ordered & shipped 11/3/06 arrived 11/7/06. They have earned themselves another customer - I have already told more than a dozen people about my experience. |

| Home theatre systems will never be practical until a wireless system is developed. In my opinion this system is both overrated and overpriced. The collective accoustic sound of the speakers blend well but were not exceptional. Purchase wise, buying a more moderately priced system would make more sense than purchasing this more expensive THX system. Moveover, this system lacks the dimension of a turntable capability. Soon after the uniqueness of the home theater fetish is over, the standard audiofile features are likely to come into play and this system does not go far enough to enhance its multi-dimensional usefulness. Thats too bad. I also did not like the tangle of wires that are unsightly and easily a trip over nuisance to children. The 990 7.1 THX system was not a positive experience for me and a prudent shopper can esily find a less pricey choice to satisfy the home theatre aspect as well as other multi dimension aesthetic capabilites. |

Im shocked at how amazing these speakers sound. Truly, Ive been tricked more than once by the surround sound ie. I actually thought someone was knocking, that it was raining outside, or a door cracked open. Wireless, to retort to someone elses comment, was not an option for me. Id rather not deal with the batteries, power variations, etc. Anyhow, if I lost these speakers, somehow, I would surely replace them. For the benefit of readers, I use these speakers with a Pioneer Elite receiver.

The Onkyo HT-990THX appears to be a fine choice for me. Im not an audio hardware enthusiast and didn’t have the time for thorough research, so I went into my purchase somewhat blindly. I already had a fine video source and monitor, and wanted an otherwise complete system. I found a great price and took a leap of faith…
This system meets my needs very well. I already have a nice audio system in a dedicated room, and wanted a surround system for the television. This one is great! It’s got plenty of power, lots of features, and looks very nice. I think it sounds good too. The four surround speakers are relatively large. I couldn’t hide them in my room. There are no on screen menus. I think that’s a plus, but the front panel display is a little small for me in my room. The remote control really does control all my other components. The set-up is as easy as can be. It comes with color coded speaker wires and a subwoofer cable. The speaker wires were too short for my room and too light for me, so I used my own, heavier wire. The only extra thing I needed was a Digital Optical Audio cable. The Subwoofer goes into standby when it doesn’t sense a signal for a period of time, and it sounds good too.
I would recommend the Onkyo HT-990THX, but I haven’t compared it to the others in this price range. It’s beyond comparison with most HTIBs I have heard.
I would recommend Vann’s. I ordered Tuesday night and received it Thursday morning. Best price and fast response!

This truly lives up to its HTIB designation. You get exactly that...home theatre in a box. I am so impressed with this system I may never go to a theatre again. I watched and listened to Master and Commander last night and had to stop the movie twice to see if it was storming outside. It wasnt! Calm and clear. The storm was only in my 22x14 family room coming out of a 7.1 sound system. Its not only me, the dog has gone from speaker to speaker chasing an imaginary fly from the jungle sounds demo disc.
Drawbacks - Some complain about it coming in 1 big 140 lb box. So did my refrigerator! Deal with it. Take it out of the box and throw the box away. No problem.
It doesnt have HDMI. That was not a problem for me either as my Toshiba 52 inch HDTV is mounted on a stand and wires behind it are not visible. If you are watching a wall mounted television you may want just 1 HDMI cable, but does it really matter if 1 wire or 4 wires show? Not to me. The THX certification was a fair trade off to not having HDMI.
This was my first purchase from Vanns, however it will not be my last. With no sales tax and free shipping they were price competitive with everyone and Vanns actually had it in stock! Fast free shipping sealed the deal for me! I definitely recommend both the Onkyo HT S990 THX HTIB and Vanns!

I was looking for a system to satisfy me. I have had Panasonic, Pioneer and Sony. Yes all the rest may look nicer, may be smaller or may be wireless but they are NOT a THX rated Onkyo.. When I first got my system I couldnt believe how big the box was. It was very easy to set up. I immediately hooked it up and I was impressed but not completely satisfied. I read reviews about how thicker speaker wire makes all the difference. I bought an optical cable to connect my OPPO dvd player to the Onkyo system. I also used those huge MONSTER speaker wires and BAM!!!! what a difference. I was blown away. You can actually feel your eardrums pounding away. I cannot believe that a system that sounds this good and clear comes right out of the box with the exception of the purchased wires. I must tip my hat to Onkyo. This is a killer system if set up with the right accessories.
Is this system large? YES... it is a very large system. You will not be able to hide these speakers. They are huge. The front and center speakers arent bad to look at if placed in the entertainment center in your home but the surround sound speakers arent easy to hide. They have hooks on them so they can be hung on a wall but because they are so large it looks bad. They stick out very far. I just left them on the floor and they look fine. I got used to them. The subwoofer is also huge. It can be compared to a small nightstand or endtable..honestly.
Overall I have to admit that I am totally satisfied with this system. The sound is incredible. You sometimes forget that you are at home and feel like you are actually at the movie theater. I give this system the highest ratings possible, I dont care how big the equipment is.... BUY IT , YOULL LOVE IT!!!! |

| I first have to say that Vanns did a great job delivering on time and making this purchase not a hassle. Now I purchased this system knowing of Onkyo, Ive had 2 onkyo systems in the past, and I have sold them to loved ones so they can see what I have with Onkyo. The full range of sound you get from these systems is phenominal , and I wouldnt expect anything less. My future mom-in-law had a lifestyle system and Im sorry but to this system Bose just cant cut the mustard. The full 7.1 is great for anything! I have mine hooked up with Monster 14G speaker wire you need to - they come with 22G. I have an X-Box 360, PS2, Wii, and a DVD player all hooked in to this thing and they sound great. My video comes to a 40 Samsung LCD. When I play Gears of War its awsome. There are enough inputs and outputs for just about anything, and if not you can always get a component switcher. The speakers you get are a little big, but I dont mind, because once you hear what comes out, you wont be sorry. For the money you spend, you will never be able to but anything that comes close to this, so thanx Vanns and Onkyo for delivering a great sounding system. |
