A receiver to drive them
The Onkyo HTS5400 is an all-in-one entertainment package that includes a powerful A/V receiver, as well as seven speakers, plus a powered subwoofer. We'll get to the speakers in a minute. For now, let's discuss the versatile receiver. A plethora of connections, including HDMI, component, composite, and digital audio, cover just about any function you can think of. And those four HDMI connections aren't just for your standard high definition video. They are actually version 1.4, which means you can route 3D signals through the receiver and enjoy the benefit of an Audio Return Channel. (An Audio Return Channel means your single HDMI cable carries both video and audio signals, eliminating one of your cabling steps). The HT-S5400 provides a handy place to connect your iPod or iPhone (a USB port on the front panel). Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-Master Audio processing ensures you'll hear the most uncompressed audio from your Blu-ray discs or other HD material. On top of that, Dolby ProLogic IIz lets you harness to extra front-height channels, should you need an extra kick in your surround sound. All of it is put together with the customary solid circuitry and construction you expect from Onkyo.
Speakers that talk the talk
The HT-S5400 package features three different unique types of speakers, plus the subwoofer. The first speaker type is the center channel. This two-way, bass-reflex speaker uses two 3.25"-cone woofers and a 1" balanced-dome tweeter to bring you up to 130 Watts of pristine sound from 65Hz to 50KHz. The next group of speakers is the front set. To handle the left and right audio here, two powerful satellite speakers are included. Each is set up as a two-way bass-reflex speaker, and each wood cabinet is home to a 5" cone woofer matched to a 1" balanced-dome tweeter. The frequency response is from 55Hz to 50KHz, and like each satellite speaker in this package, their peak power is a mind-blowing 130 Watts. The last type of satellite speaker included is the surround and surround back speakers. There are two each of these, which are the same speaker design, but labeled differently to designate which is surround and which is surround back. These full-range, acoustic-suspension dynamos are comprised of a 3.25" cone and produce a frequency response of 80Hz to 20kHz. Finally, the bass-reflex subwoofer uses a massive 10" cone to pump out frequencies between 25 and 150Hz. And, at 120 Watts of power, you can feel the vibrations from this monster! The surround/surround back speakers are able to produce up to 81dB of audio pleasure, while the center and front raise that number to 85 eardrum-shattering decibels. The nominal impedance of the satellite speakers is only 8 ohms, while the input sensitivity/impedance is 20 k-ohms for the subwoofer. Finally, each speaker uses a wood cabinet for superior acoustics. Put this all together and you've got one rocking (literally) speaker setup!
What's in the box?
Your purchase of the Onkyo HT-S5400 home theater system from Vanns.com includes all of the following: Onkyo HT-R590 AV receiver, remote control, two batteries, speaker setup microphone, indoor FM antenna, AM loop antenna, two SKF-590F front speakers (L/R), SKC-590C center speaker, two SKR-590 surround speakers (L/R), two SKB-590 surround back speakers (L/R), SKW-580 subwoofer, color-coded speaker terminals, color-coded speaker cable, subwoofer cable, and a quick set-up guide. Yes it looks sexy and sleek, but just as eye candy is, not worth the TROUBLE! Out of the first 3 months of owning the system, a third of the time was spent in the shop 6 weeks. In California the only authorized repair center is in So Cal. I am in Nor Cal, so I had to eat the shipping to them $55.00. Never had received a response from Onkyo USA. In the end they wanted to replace the mother board, but they did not have any motherboards and they were on an indefinite back order. With A LOT of yelling they upgraded me to the next model. The upgrade is I have to continually reset the unit to factory default. so there is, in effect no customizing the sound to the rooms environment, which makes the whole idea of a balanced home theater moot, and no FM, or AM radio presets and what ever other bells and whistles that the unit is supposed to have... < Will never purchase this brand again.

This surround setup is great. It would cost around 200$ for a similar receiver, and the speakers are good. nice crisp sound, plenty loud. I of course had to fiddle with the levels a bit to get the sound i wanted, but the auto setup with the audessy 2eq does a good job. I have mine in the 5.1 setup with the extra 2 speakers as front highs. It sounds great, and is awesome for movies and video games.

This system is worth it, considering the cost, especially if one is on a budget. Pros - Clarify, Range of Volume, and solid wood housings for the speakers. - Easy to use. - Quick to Setup - USB Connection on front for iPodsiPhones Cons - Speakers do not have mounts for speakers standswall mounts. Had to use a combination of plywood and industrial strength velcro to attach them to speaker mounts as a quick install. Will have to research other ways of more securepermanent installation. - Speaker wire provided is a high gauge I wired the system into my house using 16 gauge for the surround speakers, and they sound much better than when I initially set them up with the stock wire. - Sub cord isnt very long but replacement isnt expensive. - Some reviews noted the sub takes time to REALLY get the bass going. I have noticed a gain in bass, however. If you have a large room open floor plan beware that this subwoofer may not do the job. Its a fine unit, especially if you have a smaller room. I may end up buying a better, or second subwoofer.

After rebooting the receiving several times, the Onkyo receiver will work for a few hours and then will not work due to the streaming issue. Looked at Vanns systems for a year or so as we planned a home theater to match a 58 Plasma. Easy to hook up Im not an expert Sounds awesome. I havent used the microphone that automatically adjusts the sound since I dont have the speaker wire and speakers run where I want yet. I do plan to buy 16 gauge CL2 in wall wire like others have suggested here. I went for the 7.1 instead of 5.1 because I wanted the powered woofer - and it sounds sweet with music and action movie scenes. Its a real receiver too - not like those cheap box store home theater in a box sets. Got 7.1 Onkyo sound for $369 and no taxshipping. So far this purchase is totally worth it. Cant wait to run my speakers to the correct room positions and hear the system in full force.

This is a great system, great price. I did a lot of research on features and prices and this was the best combination I could find in a packaged theater surround set - thanks Vanns! Speaking of that, Vanns delivery tracking was great and it was at my house two days after ordering. Set-up was fairly easy and the Audessey EQ was great to help a non-audiophile get great surround sound. Sub has adjustable levels, turns off automatically if the audio input is light on bass - I guess to save power. Radio sound is excellent. Surround sound on football games is great, feels like youre sitting in the crowd. Movies sound better than anything Ive ever heard. Makes me feel like my media room is the showroom at an electronics store! Looking forward to many hours of movies and sports. I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a high-quality system at a reasonable price.

I found Vanns to be the lowest price and the rating for Vanns was very high. So I decided to buy the system through Vanns. The purchasing process was flawless and I received my order much quicker than I expected. I had the system working in minutes, and it was the easiest system to set up bar none. Then the real pleasant surprise was the sound. Wow, magnificant. This is a fantastic sound system all the way around, but the real surprise is how it sounds. Way to go Vanns and way to go Onkyo.

This system will run you about $100 or so more than most of the other systems Samsung, LG, Sony youll find on the shelves at the big box and department stores. But that $100 is well worth it in my opinion. The Onkyo has 4 HDMI inputs ... instead of 1 or 2. Plus component, optical, and composite input giving flexibility to connect plenty of new equipment as well as some of your older devices. 7 speakers giving option fo 7.1 channel sound ... instead of 5 speakers and 5.1 only. Also, the Onkyo speakers are 6 ohm instead of the 3 ohm variety on the cheaper systems ... resulting in better sound quality signal to noise ratio. A powered subwoofer ... instead of passive. Auto calibration of speakers Audessy. Supports 3D. I recommend to others.

Im very pleased with the Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1 so far. Vanns shipping was super fast 3 days and strait forward instructions for set up. Great sound for the price and like the USB in front of the reciever for MP3 placement. Pros Works great with my 55 Phillips LED and BDDVD. My Sat. reciever has SirusXM and the music is much better than through my older Sony system. Lipsync, and Audyssey speaker setup microphone puts you in the ball park. Use care when inserting wire in speakers as not to clamp on insulated covering instead of the twisted wire or it will result in bad connedtion and no sound . Has on-screen display with tons of adjustments. Cons Speaker wire for surroundback speakers not long enough and get a 100 of 16 gauge along with banana plugs are a plus. The USB for the MP3 player didnt work for me as I probably had an incompatible file, But it worked out better by getting a flash drive and with less hassle of having a pigtail and unit to turn on and off.

I recently bought this item from Vanns and was very surprised at how fast it came. I believe it came in about 2-3 days, which is much better than the 4 weeks it took for me to receive my tv from amazon.
I am very pleased with the sound quality from this package considering the relative low cost when comparing it to other systems of similar quality. The hdmi switching is very convenient as is the odyssey auto tuning mic that came with it. I read a lot about people saying that you would have to read in depth all of the manual to be able to use it but I found that a lot of it is pretty intuitive. The only thing I used the manual for was to remind me what formats it could handle.
The wires that came with it are very thin and I ended up getting 12 gauge wire from mono price.com which actually did make a difference in the sound quality I ordered 100ft of 16 gauge for about 16 dollars but 300 ft of 12 gauge came in the mail! D
So overall it is a very good sounding home theater system that I would recommend to anyone. I am very pleased.

The S5400 was installed using all 7 speakers and sub-woofer to provide a full surround sound for both video observation and audio usage during personal dance work in our basement. The sound quality is fantastic. The quick installation instructions proved the ease of installation. Our design allowed for great sound distribution on our dance floor as well as for video usage. The control unit is quickly reviewed for usability. The remote control is similar to other universal remotes and is quickly put into operation. Further details are available in the PDF manual on the Onkyo web site. We look forward to many hours of both video and audio pleasure from cable, DVD, MP3 and computer inputs into the S5400 system throughout the year.
