Power And Authority
All too often, home theater packages disappoint their buyers: they are underpowered, poorly engineered, and over-rated. Onkyo has emphatically resolved these shortcomings with the HT-S790 7.1-channel receiver/speaker package. In terms of power, the HT-D790's seven channels (with a cumulative power of 1000 watts) deliver with power and authority. But sheer power means nothing without the audio circuitry design, technology, and quality parts to back it up. Just like you'll find in Onkyo separate components, it's the core elements -- WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology), Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry, 192 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters, a 32-bit DSP processing chip, and an H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply) -- that provide the backbone for the home theater performance that is noticeably lacking in today's market. Admirably supported by the 7.1-channel speaker system (an impressive package in its own right), the HT-S790 distinguishes itself as a home theater system for the mid-to large-sized family home.
Speaking Of Speakers
This speaker package exudes a feeling of power. Providing a more-than-capable match for the receiver, this package of seven speakers includes two fronts and a center channel (all with dual 5" OMF midrange woofers and 1" balanced dome tweeters), four surrounds (with 3.13' woofers and 0.75" tweeters), and a 230-watt powered subwoofer with a 10" long-throw driver. Onkyo features the Onkyo Micro Fiber (OMF) diaphragm in both its front and center dual 5" woofers. OMF utilizes a pure cotton weave to absorb vibrations. Thin and rigid, this fiber enables a fast, accurate response, which brings an exceptional midrange clarity to this system. The HT-S790 also includes cinemaFILTER technology to restore the correct tonal balance of a movie soundtrack in the smaller environment of your home, so you can enjoy the movie the way the directors meant it to be heard.. only, at home.
Options Galore!
By buying the Onkyo HT-S790, you are welcoming a slew of other technologies into your house. Don't worry, they are all excellent guests. To begin with, this receiver is XM Radio-ready. Purchase an XM Connect And Play Antenna and a subscription and connect to more than 150 channels of uninterrupted music, news, sports, talk, and entertainment. You'll never run out of options, and you'll never have to suffer through ordinary programming (and commercials) again. this receiver also prepares you for the future. How, you ask? By providing HDTV-capable component video switching, for connectivity to the latest display technologies. and, it does it without leaving you lost in the time warp -- all your old components will work with this system, until you're ready to make the leap. Topping it all off, the HT-S790 is friendly with your iPod. Merely buying an optional dock will bring all your home and allow them to be heard over the seven speakers this system boasts.
WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology)
Originally developed for Onkyo's high-end receivers, WRAT is a collection of proprietary technologies that achieves three fundamental goals in the pursuit of superior home theater: wider frequency response, reduced amplifier distortion at high volume, and better control of current and electro/mechanical kick-back from speakers. WRAT ensures that you're getting the audio performance necessary for a range of video content and enables quality playback from high-resolution formats like DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD, as well as your regular CDs and DVDs.
Craziness! 192 kHz/24-Bit DACs For All Channels?
Yep. Crazy, but true. The HT-S790 incorporates 192 kHz/24-bit DACs for all channels. You can expect these DACs to give you a comparable audio quality to separate components. With a much higher resolution than the incoming signal, the DACs enable the receiver to generate a more accurate audio playback. Also, the DAC's 128x oversampling rate optimizes the signal-to-noise ratio and increases clock jitter tolerance. You'll be hard pressed to find home theater packages incorporating these DACs at all, let alone for all channels. Enjoy!
Connectivity Options
Embracing your other components and preferences, the HT-S790 gives you a range of video inputs and outputs- - component video, S-Video, composite video. Component video switching (three inputs and one output) gives the HT-S790 more than enough bandwidth to pass a progressive scan DVD signal (at least 12 MHz) and 720p (at least 37 MHz), as well as the capability to pass a flawless signal to progressive HDTV (at least 30 Hz) -- just what's needed for today's home theater systems. Four assignable digital inputs (three optical and one coaxial) are included to pass 5.1 to 7.1 home theater surround sound, and 5.1-multichannel inputs enable playback of DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD sources.
The Cream Of DTS And Dolby Digital Processing Technologies
Incorporating powerful DTS and Dolby Digital decoders into the HT-S790 gives some powerful playback platforms. Dolby Digital EX takes a 5.1 video source and uses matrix decoding to derive a center surround channel from the left and right surrounds. DTS-ES Matrix works in the same way except it uses DTS's own matrix technology, while DTS-ES Discrete plays back discrete, 6.1 channel content from DVDs and CDs. With DTS Neo:6, a matrix system derives six channels from two-channel source material. Dolby Pro Logic IIx transforms any native stereo or 5.1 signal into a 6.1- or 7.1-channel output with Movie, Music, and Game modes that effectively tailor your sound to the source material. Consider yourself well and truly covered for the latest home theater surround sound media.
