It's Play Time
This stylish microsystem takes up very little shelf space, yet finds room to incorporate plenty of audio entertainment. The 3-disc CD player provides quality audio and convenient operation with six repeat modes, memory reverse, play exchange (which lets you swap two discs while a third is playing), shuffle/random play, and random track memory to allow you to program a play list of up to 40 tracks. It's also equipped with a high-quality, single-bit AccuPulse digital-to-analog converter to bring out the subtlest nuances of your CDs and it's part of the reason you'll find this unit's performance so amazing. The onboard electronic bass, treble controls, and Onkyo's adjustable Acoustic Presence circuitry will let you tailor the sound, or just relax while you take advantage of direct track access and use the included remote control.
WRAT Rocks!
Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT) was developed to tackle the sonic demands of today's multi-channel digital audio formats like DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD and DTS. WRAT virtually eliminates the negative effects of counter-electromotive force by applying an uncommonly low amount of negative feedback to stabilize the sound. The final result is a flat response, which means you get full bandwidth power across all channels by extending the useful frequency range of amplifiers. In other words, this receiver can faithfully reproduce any signal that you want to listen to and do it more accurately than you thought possible!
Ready to Receive
The attractive silver centerpiece of this system also houses all the receiver circuitry, including Onkyo's discrete output stage that contributes to the outstanding audio output of the MC35TECH, as does the special low impedance drive (5 ohm). The combination of advanced circuitry and quality construction enables this system to make the most of its 20 watts per channel output power, providing impressive sound while conserving space and energy. The built-in tuner uses the APR (Automatic Precision Reception) system for clear, accurate tuning and has room in its memory for presets of up to 30 radio stations so you can program in your favorites for quick and easy dial jumping. You also have the option of automatic or manual tuning. Three-step acoustic control gives you added direction over how your system sounds and the subwoofer pre out allows you to add a separate subwoofer if you want a bit more boom in your music. With all of the line/DVD inputs, processor in/out jacks, and subwoofer pre out that this unit has, you'll be able to create your own home theater system. The MC35TECH has a total of five audio inputs and three outputs so you can expand your system by hooking up a Mini Disc, cassette deck, audio from your VCR, and so on while the optical digital audio output enables you to send digital audio from your CD player to an external CD recorder or a number of other useful and entertaining devices. You'll have lots of possibilities with the MC35TECH, especially since it won't be taking up a lot of space.
Sweet Speakers
Of course the sound quality of any system depends heavily on the quality of the speakers. The speakers included with the MC35TECH stereo shelf system use a two way design consisting of one inch dome tweeters for accurate high end performance while OMF cone woofers 4 3/4" in size nicely round out the lower end of the dynamic range. Working together the woofer and tweeter are able to produce a frequency response of 60Hz to 30kHz. The cabinets use a bass reflex design to maximize audio output, producing surprisingly large sound for such a small unit and they have banana-plug-compatible speaker terminals to accommodate high-quality speaker cable. An attractive wood finish nicely accents the receiver's silver sheen and lends an air of quality and class. If you closed your eyes while listening to the sound, you'd never guess it was coming from something so small. This is a really impressive unit; Onkyo has really outdone itself with the MC35TECH.

An Exceptional Value
I have and prize this system, which I bought five years ago. What is extraordinary -- and far better than most mini systems and many full sized ones -- is the quality of the amplifier. The sound is clear, pure, and rich. I use it for classical music with my high end vintage Sennheiser headphones, and the sound is glorious. In fact, the tuneramplifier compares favorably with good headphone amplifiers and would be worth buying for that purpose alone.
The DVD player is also outstanding, but use it with great care. If you give it rapid or contradictory instructions, it will jam. I had to have mine replaced. Fortunately, I had a service contract. Since that incident, early in my ownership of the machine, I have had no problems. Just give it one instruction at a time and wait until its carried it out before telling it to do anything else. On newer models, Onkyo has gone to single disc players to avoid the problems arising through the changer.
The speakers are not bad, but they are not of the same quality as the amplifier. Heard this way, it sounds like a very good mini system -- exactly what it is billed to be. It might be on a par with a Bose Wave Radio CD player. But the Bose cannot begin to match the Onkyo with my Sennheiser headphones. Much audio jargon is hyperbole, but WRAT Onkyos wide range amplifier technology is for real.
This thing sounds incredible!!! (November 10, 2005)

I try to find out as much as I can about the product before I buy it. A lot of reviewers had mentioned that the CD player has issues at the same time they said the reciever is better than a lot of recievers that cost a lot more so I bought a Factory reconditioned unit. Here's why? I didnt want to spend more than $400, bought it for $244 and if someday the CD player dies I'll buy a Yamaha CDC-585. Home Theater System, 5,7,... a zillion channels? I didnt want it, I wanted 2 channels and quality sound. I hate pathetic sounding plastic monsters that JVC and others make. Clarity and bass at low volume is what I wanted and MC35-TECH is the best sub $400 system that one can get. It's everything the reviews on the web say but I felt the need for more bass so I bought a Sony SAWM500 powered subwoofer. This is one amazing stereo system, it's music to my ears, I love it.
