| This is truly a GREAT product!! FM reception, especially selectivity, is exceptionally good for such a samll and economical unit. The sound quality is even better than on my Cambridge Model 88, also designed by Henry Kloss, as was the Tivoli. This has a wood casing which is definitely more musical than the metal casing on the 88. [Don't even consider plastic!] The Tivoli also has manual tuning which I definitely prefer to the digital presets on the 88. And you can separate the speakers to get much better imaging with the Tivoli. But there is no remote for this unit, so, if you need that feature, because you're diabled etc., this is not the unit for you. All in all this is a fantastic radio at a very reasonable price. It has amazingly deep rich bass for such a tiny package, and there is none of that tinny sound in the high end typical of most radios. The set's bass can be improved a bit by adding the optional Tivoli subwoofer, but even without the subwoofer the general listening experience is very rewarding, more like a high quality mini-stereo system than an ordinary radio. You can also play CDs through the unit's auxillary input, with very pleasing results. Highly recommended!! |

Last week I received my Tivoli Model Two from the good people at Vanns who shipped it to me at no cost and tax free. Anybody who?s been doing their research on the Model Two knows that Tivoli Audio has a tight control on the cost of their sets and there really aren?t any ?deals? out there. However, after plugging in my unit, I knew right away that I really did get a deal. The sound that comes out of this thing is incredible. I say this as someone who doesn?t consider himself a hardcore audiophile but, who at the same time, didn?t really think sound quality above a certain acceptable level really mattered. I was wrong. For the amount I paid for this, I never expected such a gorgeous sound especially from such small speakers.
First off, since this thing is marketed toward radio lovers, I have to say the reception on this small unit is pretty damn good. Living in the Bay Area, there is tons of noise on the dial from out of range to pirate radio stations. This thing has an excellent analog [yes, a big fat analog dial] tuner that can hone in stations I could never pick up with my previous stereo. Not only do the big corporate radio stations come in better than ever, but even the smallest low power FM neighborhood stations sound good.
Design is as important as sound to me since I will be looking at the unit more than I actually listen to it. Although at first disappointed with only one color combo choice, I have to say I really like the dark metallic ?taupe? and cherry wood casing. Overall, the unit is very compact, and looks a lot like a mid 20th century shop class lesson in radio technology [in a good way]. That?s not the best comparison, but I was only born in the 80s, so shoot me.
There aren?t a lot of features on the Model Two, and that?s a Good Thing. My last stereo had a CDMP3 player, a tape deck, flashing LCD lights, etc. I used those features all of about 4 times in the 2 years I?ve had the stupid thing. The Model Two?s coolest feature [besides the sound] is the ability to mix in an auxiliary device [in my case, my PowerBook] so you can hear all those alert beeps while listening to the radio. This is also good because, if I switch the dial over to AUX [there are, in a sense, two aux ports, one that mixes in the sound with the radio and one that?s just a traditional aux port], since I have nothing plugged into the aux port [yet], all I hear is my PowerBook. iTunes has never sounded so good.
Obviously I love this stereo and I don?t ever see myself parting with it [unless I got another stereo by Tivoli Audio from Vann's]. There are, however, a few minor flaws. One is the fact that I couldn?t chose the color combination I wanted [like with the original Model One]. This turned out not to be a big deal because of how good the only option looks. Another very minor issues is the difficulty of reading the dial in low light.
So, again, I love this unit. I love it almost as much as my PowerBook and my mother. Really! Its small, simple and sonic [Heh, was going for alliteration there]. Really though, unless your crazy and like weird LCD lights, a 600 disc changer, 5 tape decks and crappy sound, you too will love it, and probably even more than you love my mother. |

I've seen & listened to the BOSE WaveRadios & admired their performance. The Tivoli fulfills every expectation I've had & I couldn't be more satisfied. What really impressed me is the sensitivity & selectivity of the tuning. I have a couple of weaker stations that I favor and this unit excels.
Couple that with the superb service from Vanns and I would rate myself as one completely satisfied customer. I know I'll be back to this web-site from now on.
Good show !! |
