This Sony dual cassette deck surprised me by its solid built, features and sound. I had purchased this unit basically for playback of a collection of old cassettes as I burned them to CD. Right out of the box, you can tell its solid and well built. After a quick read of the manual, I found this deck well-engineered with features such as pitch control, Dolby B and C - some other decks dont include Dolby C, and a useful display. Playing back cassettes, the sonic quality is great - even in both directions of playback. Oh, and my 5 year old Sony remote control operates both A and B sides!
Sony has a winning analog cassette deck in this age of digital. While cassette recording may be declining, this is a awesome playback deck for those of us with a large tape collection and older equipment which cant be repaired anymore. 5 stars for sure!

I have hundreds of cassette tapes and my old tape deck died. I went for this deck because of SONY quality & reputation. This deck has the most features for the price. The quality of sound from the tapes is superb. I enjoy the relay play function because I dont have to keep stopping & play a new tape. It does this automatically. All I do is take out a played tape & put in a new one for the next play. I dont press any buttons, Its all automatic. The display is great. I know which deck & what side is playing. The instructions are quite simple & easy to understand. It took me 5 minutes from box to hookup to my system. Good job SONY! I have other SONY units in my system and each one has never failed. I recommend this tape deck. The CD to tape function is a must if you have a tape player in your car and want to transfer CD to TAPE. Dont overlook this Cassette Deck!

This is a replacement for a dual cassette deck from the early 1980s that quit working 8 months ago. I wanted to be able to play my old tapes again, and I will use the deck to record only on rare occasions if at all.
I cannot give the TC-WE475 a 5-star rating for two reasons that have been stated in previous reviews -- 1. the clunky noises whenever you engage play, rewind, or fast forward, and 2. the minimal operating instructions.
The noises are disconcerting at first but, as others have noted, the are no unusual noises once a tape is playing. The main issue I have with the users manual is that the illustrations sometimes require a magnifying glass. It also is frustrating at first that the parts identification illustration identifies features by number, but the manual then provides no numerical listing. Instead, the features are listed in alphabetical order, and you have to scan through this entire list until you find the applicable number for the feature you are interested in.
In terms of sound produced by this tape deck, I have no complaints whatsoever. Pre-recorded tapes sound great, as do tapes I recorded myself with Dolby C. In my opinion Dolby B is still Dolby B, and tapes recorded with Dolby B sound better if you play them back without engaging the Dolby. This experience with Dolby B is the same as with my former tape deck.
In two ways the Sony TC-WE475 has exceeded my expectations. First, metal bias tapes recorded with Dolby C sound very good, something I had not expected after reading the specs for this unit. Second, the deck evens out the channels of 30-year-old cassette tapes that were recorded in mono on portable tape recorders. For example, I used a microphone to record my fathers old 78 RPM records, and the sound is even from left and right. On my old unit and in the tape player in my car, I would drastically adjust the controls to get relatively even sound from both channels.
