I was thinking Boom Box, at first, for a small room. Came accross the Onkyo CS445 while scanning on-line. I bought it based on the review history, recognized quality of the brand, and appearance. In a nutshell, if you want great sound from a mini system, this a an excellent choice for the price. The sound is impressive for small speakers. Spring connectors for the speaker wires adds true component flexability. A subwoofer speaker can be added via the designated line output, if you want. It already has great bass. The Ipod or Iphone port is on top of the unit and has a flip-up cover which is inconspicuous when not in use. The CD-Receiver unit at 40w per channel is more than adequate for the small high quality speakers. It has features of more costly units. Easy to set up. Quality workmanship. Great for small spaces. Most standard book shelves are either 10 or 12 inches deep, so you might consider that because the CD-Receiver unit is 13 in. deep. The shipping was punctual, well packaged and factory fresh. I would recommend this product and company. Glad I didnt get the Boom Box.

No its not an audiophile piece of equipment, but for what it is it is very, very good! I moved to a small apt. and left behind probably six thousand dollars worth of stereo gear. Ive combined the onkyo with a jamo sub and the result is far closer to the system I left behind than you may think. Great clarity, smooth midrange. Highly recommended if you have limited space. Great feature set, easy to set up and use.

Great little system with a big sound. I had owned an older version of this that I bought 10 years ago- it lasted 8 years until the onoff button stopped working. So I thought I would try another one. The unit is intuitive to use and program stations. Had it hooked up and running quickly. The receiver is really nice looking small unit. Theyve simplified the design and now its all black. Unfortunately the speakers have become smaller and less powerful- about half the output of my old unit. But still a very good sound overall. I have it tied into my Airport Express also so play iTunes wirelessly. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

I was actually looking for a boombox that could accommodate my ipod for the ease of listening to a collection of cds while working with our drum circle. I'm a percussionist and play cajon, djembe, udu-utar and doumbek. This fine little unit can still be taken with you and used for all the music on your ipod.
What amazed me, and I have Onkyo equipment, was the great sound from these little bookshelf speakers. I burned them in for a hour and it even seemed to improve. I then, because I just had to see, mated the receiver to some Boston Acoustic A70 speakers. I'm using the unit in family room and lovn the results ... some say the similar unit without the ipod dock is even better, but this certainly works for me.
I am disappointed with the FM reception from the single wire antenna provided, but I'm going to try hooking up a simple fm set of rabbit ears and hope for improvement.

I already owned the Onkyo CR-325 stereo in my home office when I purchased this new Onkyo mini stereo. I purchased the CS445 for my living room because of the ipodiphone docking station. First, this stereo has a lot of features and works great with my iPhone 3 and my wifes iPhone 4.
My wife has to remove her case to connect her iPhone. I like the size, it is very small and fits on any book shelf case. I am using the stereo with a sub-woofer, and I would recommend that if you want to fill a larger room like a living room.
The negatives are the connection for the iPhone seem a little cheap. It is working fine, but I hope it doesnt break in the future from the weight of the iPhones. The speakers are cheaper than the Onkyo CR-325 paper woofer and plastic tweeter. The sound is fine, but the Onkyo CR325 puts out better sound.
If you need the smaller size or ipod features then get this system, but if you want the best sound I would by the Onkyo CR325.

This is a very nice compact stereo system. The sound is very nice and great for a small room. The iPod interface is great and keeps the iPod charged. The MP3 CD player is also a good addition. This is a great little unit for the money.
