Blu-ray disc player audio decoding
Your 5.1-Channel STRDH500 receiver is optimized for Blu-ray Disc® and other HD Sources. Three High Definition Media Interface (HDMI) inputs are capable of accepting resolutions up to 1080p, offering the full video quality that Blu-ray Disc format can deliver. And with Sony's HDMI "Active Intelligence," the receiver can detect and receive the best possible video and audio signals from all connected devices, making connection and performance as simple as plugging in a single wire (HDMI-compatible HDTV required). One Touch Play
With "One Touch Play," operations that took several steps have been reduced to one. Press the PLAY button on the remote, watch the A/V receiver turn on, then the DVD player power on and start to play, finally the BRAVIA television turns on and switches to the correct video input.

Using it as a bedroom system with our TV. I wasnt expecting this receiver to be as good as it is. Great sound, easy set up and very intuitive controls. Five stars.

I bought this product because I needed to replace my old receiver, but didnt need to purchase a new set of 5.1 surround speakers.
This unit offers a lot for a very moderate price. I was able to hook up my old speakers to it without a problem and it sounds great.
My only complaint was that I found the set-up to be confusing and difficult. it took me some time and several attempts before I got it working properly, and the directions it came with were practically useless.
Overall great buy, and now that it is all hooked up I am completely satisfied with it. I would recommend this product to people who are looking for an inexpensive but respectable replacement of an older unit.

Avoid this receiver-
I bought this from an open box clearance email and saw it had 3 HDMI inputs and jumped on it.
I was very impressed how fast Vanns shipped it and had it packed. It looked brand new!
I hooked up everything and turned it on, but no sound??
Checked the manual, and it says the HDMI only carries a video signal through this receiver and you must buy additional optical cables if you want sound.
After I went back and checked some listings for this receiver it does say that both cables are required...I just missed it, but who would have thought...I mean, isnt that the reason for having HDMI connections?
For a few bucks more get the 700.
I appreciate Vanns return policy and will shop here again.

My old Sony STR DE 935 died and I opted for the STRDH500 as a replacement. The older one had better graphics but lacked the newer inputs like HDMI. I miss the front input jacks and theilluminated blue bar when DTS or 5.1 Dolby was in use. But the sound from the new model is everything that I hoped for. Much impressed with the VANNS website, prices and shipping, even though I had to wait over a week for its arrival.. Montana to Vermont in winter.

Its got some power. Sounds better than my old Onkyo. I have the old PS3 so I wasnt concerned about true-hd 6.1 sound. The 5.1 works great. I have bookshelf speakers. Easy to set up. I didnt need to make any adjustments. I basically just plugged in all the connections and it sounded great.

Easy shopping!
I looked in many big name electronic retail stores before I Shopped at Vanns online. What I was looking for was an inexpensive 5.1 receiver. I couldnt find this product for this price in local or big name electronic stores but Vanns made it easy and after placing my order, the receiver showed up in just a few days. The Sony receiver works great providing dynamic 5.1 surround sound. I think Ill save my time and money next time by shopping at Vanns first.

I have a lot of medical expenses right now and cant afford the very best equipment at this time. I was surprized at all the features this very reasonably priced receiver had. It did everything I wanted and more. I was happy at how easy it was to set up and get started. To be honest it would have been overkill to buy anything with more features.

Very good for the price range. The tuner does not pick up radio stations as good as older, more expensive Sony that I still have. Overall pleased with connection to surround system, HDTV, blu-ray player.
