Im an avid home theater guru and I recently wanted to upgrade my home theater from the Sony STR-DG800 to the STR-DG820. I thought the only differences was that the 820 had 4 HDMI inputs instead of 2 and the 800 only aloud video to pass through the HDMI and not sound. And the 820 has HDMI 1.3 which dealt with the lip sync issues that the 800 had with videoaudio timing. Well, the 820 has all these and a little more. Its also Blue-Ray ready for all the new 7.1 sound formats. Because this is the first Sony receiver beside the expensive ES Models to accept HDMI sound, I was ony able to play my rear 7.1 speakers as a matrix 6.1 because of fiber optic. HDMI is the way to go and this receiver does it well with no lip sync issues.
The biggest difference I notice was actually the sound! On the 800 I would normally listen to movies around volume 55. With the 820, the power is much more and cleaner Im now listening to it at around 35!!! I have Klipch Reference Series 8 inch tower speakers so it takes a lot to move these suckers so the extra power meant better sound and less distortion. Of course I never really heard any distortion with the 800 anyhow but you get the drift.
At any rate, Ive owned a Denon, Pioneer, Onkyo, and heard a Yamaha and for this price you are getting what a Denon or Yamaha would cost you about $1,500. Hands down best receiver you can get for you money. And its Sony? Two year warranty and Ive never had a receiver go bad in 15 years. Take it from me, get this bad boy and you won’t be disappointed. It has everything trust me. And using my product search program, Vann,s had the lowest price and my receiver was here in three days!!!!

I am very pleased with this receiver, after one week of heavy usage. It really does deliver clear, dynamic sound and picture, with blessed SILENCE, in the absence of music or dialogue. It is such a pleasure to hear none of the background hiss and crackle that my 10-year-old Denon analog receiver produced. The automatic speaker balancing system worked nicely, as well, to my surprise. Frankly, I didnt have much faith in that device, but trust me, the thing worked! I have the most seamless surround sound my speakers have ever produced.
I have a Sony 50-inch TV, a fiber-optic cable box with DVR and a Sony Blueray player hooked up to this STRD820, all via HDMI cables. I am totally digital, now, so I have no need for analog connectivity--why,then should I pay more? I have the ideal machine for my needs.
Sony has gotten smart, in my opinion, to offer us several receivers that have what we want, and no more. If you dont need to power 2 or 3 rooms, you arent stuck with paying for that extra amplifier, anymore....SWEET. This machine powers my Monitor speakers just fine, all of which are rated at 120 watts, max.
Vanns is where you want to buy your ideal digital receiver. Believe me, I shopped all the other websites selling this particular product, and Vanns was the only one that offered all three of the following features best price, no shipping charge, no tax, and even the opportunity to make no-interest payments for a year! They were professional and reliable.
So, Budget Audiophiles,
Cheers!
