I cant think of anything bad to say about this unit. Since I bought it Ive heard surround effects from my movie collection Ive never noticed with my old receiver. Because of its ability to decode all the new CODECS I can now add the new Sony BDP S350 without having to wait for the more expensive S550. If you feel like you need more wattage although I cant imagine whythere are higher watt models in this line with the same great features. Like a previuos reviewer I lack the room size to take advantage of full 7.1. Someday |

I picked up this receiver to combat a problem I was having after purchasing a PS3. My HDTV is older and does not support 720p resolution only 480 and 1080i. This receiver does the job of fixing this issue quite nicely.
I chose this unit because of its ability to upconvert all signals to 1080i resolution, 1080p switching ability for future upgrade and the number of HDMI inputs. This unit is replacing a Pioneer Home Theater in a box solution, and I am quite impressed with the outcome. Setup was very easy being as particular as I am, I hooked everything up as a test prior to installing into my TV cabinet.
One thing I will suggest is that if you plan on using heavy gauge speaker wire I used 14 ga, spend a little extra money and pick up some banana plugs. The speaker terminals are a bit tight for heavier gauges of wire. I tested first with 14 ga and found it tight, so I picked up some banana plugs and used them instead.
The on-screen setup guide is a breeze to use, but it is only available if using the HDMI output to the TV. The unit is also supplied with a setup microphone that makes it very easy to calibrate the system for time delay, speaker volume, etc. I listened to a BluRay movie before and after the calibration, and afterward the sound was very crisp and noticeably better than before.
The only issue I had and its not really an issue it that the HDMI inputs are passthrough only. I wanted to be able to use the HDMI output on my PS3 to take advantage of the PS3s upconvert capability for movies, in addition to using this units upconvert for games that are only 720p.
I ended up having to use the component output on the PS3 and rely on this unit for upconversion - and it does a good job. I have a couple of games that only output to 720p for HD, and with this unit I can now output them to 1080i to play in HD they were downgraded to 480p previously.
Overall, this is a good unit and a good value. I hope to take advantage of the bi-amp feature by adding a set of Polk Audio front speakers in the near future. |

A good solid home theater receiver. Easy to set up with the Audssey system. The surround sound on existing DVDs that I own is really amazing even in the 5.1 system that I currently have hooked up. I think its an excellent receiver. It does run warm so you should be cognizant of that when installing in a cabinet to maintain adequate room for ventilation. The 4 HDMI connections are a real plus in reducing wire clutter with my system. The upscaling functions usefulness depends on the native upscaling capability of your monitor. My Sony XBR seems to do a great job on its own so I have used pass through so far. The sound with music I would call clear and clean. There are many listening modes and depending on the source material I seem to like different settings. Ive still want to do a lot of tweaking, but the Audessey set-up does a terrific job all by itself. Certainly you could live with the settings as is. At the price value point for me nothing else was in its class. |

I recently purchased the Onkyo 606B. I currently have it hooked up to my HD satellite receiver, PS3 and Panasonic PT-61LCZ70 HDTV. The first and foremost noticeable advantage is that all I needed to hook up these units was 3 HDMI cables. System is very user friendly.
This system is capable of 7.1 surround sound but as of yet I currently only use it as a 5.1. This for my room size 16x12 is plenty. However, this is not a loss of potential. The last 2 channels can be used in a zone 2 mode that can simultaneously play. That mean movie in one room, radioIPod in another. This is a key for great entertaining of guest.
Over all I have no complaints about the Onkyo 606B. This is my first receiver and could be my last for a while.

Sound great in most respects. However, there seems to be a crackle coming over the speakers when playing anything that comes in through HDMI inputs. FM radio sounds great...very clean. But switch to movies, CDs, anything passed through and you get a very perceptible crackle, as if the tweeter was blown or something. Guess Ill call Onkyo.
Otherwise VERY pleased. |

A little confusing with the initial setup, but once figured out, it is very easy to use. Everything sounded great at first and the 4 HDMI passthoughs are a real plus.
72 hours after initial setup and a loud buzzing is present when the receiver is turned on. The buzzing is coming from the receiver and not the speakers. I thought it might be a bad wire on my part, so I disconnected everything and the buzzing is still present.
Now I will have to get my brand new receiver serviced. Very disappointed with that. |
