I have been shopping receivers for years, and finally decided to upgrade to either a Sony ES or Pioneer Elite model. The pioneer won out for me based on price, and I couldnt be happier about my choice.
The unit is beautiful looking. It is large though, so measure your shelving space. One thing I really appreciate about the ascetics is that the list of formats it decodes DTS, THX, etc. is on top. This is a small thing, but it just makes it look cleaner.
As for performance, I think its hard to beat. Running in through my Klipsch Reference series speakers, the highs are tight and controlled, the mids flawless, and the bass tones deep and rich. I can turn this thing up as loud as I can stand, and there is no loss of audio quality.
There are endless combinations of sound formats DTS, Dolby, Neo, Front stage, advanced, etc.. Youll always find one you like for your source.
The video processing is good and the switching works well. However, if your source upscales, Id bypass the Pioneer version, because it is kind of weak causes pixels. This is not a big deal because you can shut it off and pass pure 1080p from the source. In my case, I have an older DVD. It passes 480p on s-video, and looks better when I turn off the receiver’s upscaling. Besides, youll notice in the manual THX recommends shutting it off.
There are a ton of connection options. However, some might say 2 HDMI in and one out are not enough. Well, at this price, just get an HDMI switch separate, and plug it in. Or use the component video and digital audio plugs separate.
The remote is pretty good. I programmed it to run my other equipment. Most brands are pre-programmed. However, I had to teach it my Comcast Motorola DVR-Cable box. This took several tries.
All-in-all, I would highly recommend this unit. All you really lose from the 92 and 94 models are some HDMI inputs and the Faduja chip for upscaling. So, if you can live with that, this is the way to go. |

I have replaced Pioneer VSX-815 to Pioneer VSX-91TXH. The new VSX-91TXH sounds clear, crisp, and it is more powerful than VSX-815. I love it. It is better that what I had, and it is worth it. The Vann’s is the place to buy this great product. It was shipped fast, and it arrived without damages. It was double boxed. It was a good business with Vann’s. Good deal!
