Three dimensions from one speaker

SSA surround technology uses subtle but complex directional cues to completely free the sound from the box and convince your ear/brain listening mechanism that you are surrounded by great sounding Definitive loudspeakers. Since the Mythos SSA50 does not depend on bouncing sound off walls, it works in virtually any room and set-up configuration. The SSA50 uses SSA technology on the surround channel speakers and the front left and right speakers as well, so that you get big three-dimensional imaging from both multi-channel and stereo sources.

Superior Definitive technology

First and foremost, a single speaker surround solution needs to have excellent audio fidelity and clarity to deliver a truly satisfying listening experience. It is here that Definitive's SSA50 truly distinguishes itself. The front left, right, and center channel drivers utilize Definitive's exclusive and patent-pending Balanced Dual Surround System (BDSS) technology. Speaker cones usually have one support point at the circumference of the cone (called the surround) but BDSS drivers have two support points or surrounds. This design suppresses cone resonance and promotes a longer, more linear cone motion for higher output, lower distortion and more accurate frequency response. You'll enjoy perfectly natural and lifelike timbre with crystalline clarity on voices, musical instruments, and movie sound effects, even at high volume levels. Definitive's tweeter is a pure aluminum dome, which has been heat-treated to relax the crystal structure and then coated with a ceramic to produce extended highs that reveal nuance and shimmer without a trace of edginess.

Keeping it clean

In order to keep the enclosure from being longer than popular sized video displays, Definitive engineers positioned the front channel tweeters in front of the drivers. While this is a commonly used space-saving technique, a tweeter placed in front of the driver usually interferes with the driver's sound waves. Using computer and physical modeling, Definitive developed tweeter-housing geometry and venting that eliminates interference effects for the kind of audiophile-grade clarity, precision, and accuracy that has made Definitive the number one choice of high-end loudspeaker buyers.

Monocoque aluminum enclosure

Like the entire Mythos Series, the SSA50 is fabricated from aircraft-grade extruded aluminum styled to perfectly match today's flat panel plasma and LCD TVs. The SSA50 can be shelf or wall mounted with supplied hardware. Internal baffles and braces inside the enclosure eliminate interference effects between drivers and channels for true audiophile purity and maximum channel separation.

The practice of using the catchphrase “soundbar” has a pretty unfortunate moniker these days equated to using the phrase “sports car” to define the Pontiac Fiero of the 1980’s. Well folks… compared to the Pontiac Fiero, the Definitive Technologies Mythos SSA-50 is a Maserati GranTurismo with a super model in the driver’s seat. I’m not saying that the SSA-50 is born without faults… Which I will cover a bit later, but boy does this thing sing to you. First things first The Room Layout I have one of the worst rooms acoustically to sit and enjoy an awe-inspiring movie or soundtrack! Facing the TV you have a wall of glass from floor to ceiling on the right hand side and a traditional sheetrock wall to the left. While still facing the TV, the kitchen and breakfast area are twenty feet behind you with hardwood flooring throughout the entire house with a small area rug in front of the sofa. Floor to ceiling height is approximately twelve feet in the center sloping to ten feet at the walls. Next up The Equipment AV Receiver Marantz SR5005 7.1 Channel Front, Surround and Center Definitive Technologies Mythos SSA-50 Rear Surround Definitive Technologies Mythos GEM XL Subwoofer Klipsch RW-10d Meat and Potatoes The install and tweaking When I first installed the SSA-50 I had mixed emotions… I started off the install using the SSA-50 in 5.1-channel configuration on the Marantz and was a little disappointed in the lack of rear projection. [Note This isn’t the speaker’s shortcoming but more so the room’s acoustic layout. I ended up using preexisting wires in the ceiling and purchased and installed the DefTech’s GEM XL’s as rear surrounds after the fact.] Cursing and Expletives Toils and trouble As for installing the array… I choose to place the array on top of cabinet and not hang it on the wall. This led me to several issues which I reluctantly have to drop a star for. The included wall adapter also does double duty as a desktop stand which may be adequate when using plain old speaker wire but inadequate when using thicker audio cables. When I installed the SSA-50 using banana lugged speaker cables, the wall adapter was made useless due to the adapter having too small of an access hole for the wires to fit through. Shame on you DefTech As a work-a-round I ended up purchasing some decorative curtain brackets and installing these into the drilled and tapped holes in the rear of the SSA-50 as stabilizing feet and not using the bracket. Be forewarned if you are going to mount the SSA-50 to the wall and use the included bracket with good quality speaker cables. You will be disappointed….. General Consensus My Maserati does 185 Once the tweaking on the receiver was all dialed in and the installation was completed… the SSA-50 has the looks and sounds of a true Italian sports car with the only caveat being the poor design of the Fiero designed mounting plate. One ride on the SSA-50 and you will be hooked and you will never go wrong shopping at Vanns… I have been a customer since 2007 and have nothing but great things to say about this company.

If you dont want to run cables and physically place the speakers in different places , this Speaker is for U . What it gives you is 5 speaker system in One Single Speaker Bar. It is not only the one speaker . It is the Sound Quality coming out of the Speaker Bar . Its Amazing Technology and Audio Quality is Superb . Don't get fooled by the size of the Speaker Bar when compared to 5 physical Speaker . This bar gives you a GOOD Quality Audio output . My Setup Sony Bravia 55 , Denon AVR 3310 , Klipsch Subwoofer 10 and the DT SSA-50 Silver . I watched some of my favoriete movies again and i was thrilled . I was thrilled by hearing new audios which I used to miss earlier . Some movies Kung fu Panda , Toy Story , How to train your dragon , Die Hard 4 etc . I give 5 star for Audio Quality coming out of Movies I give 4 star for Audio quality coming out of Audio Songs I give 3.9 star for the Speaker net . Black color in front of the speaker . It is of O.k Quality . Overall 4.5 STAR because of Sound quality .

Excellent quality speaker system with great sound. Perfect solution if it is inconvenient or not possible to install seperate surround speakers. Be sure to follow the instructions in the manual for proper setup in your receiver and be carefull when you install the speaker wire to the terminals on the back of the enclosure and you will not be disappointed.

This is my first surround sound system so I cant compare it to a conventional 5.1 system. The Doppler effect is defiantly noticeable on both leftright and frontback action. We rarely perceive any sounds to be from behind the seating position this is not a deal breaker for us, we would select this item again. For us the one speaker location is a huge plus, but you do need a sub. We wernt sure if sound quality would be good enough for music but after listing to the SSA 50 we are listing our 28 year old Bose 901s on eBay. If you want high quality sound with a simple install get this unit. Note to Definitive Technology the wall mount bracket should be twice a long to make centering the unit and attaching to studs easier.
