The lowdown
You don't have to be a connoisseur to know these speakers rock — that happens the moment you hear them. These speakers are pure power, pure style — and Pure Energy. And, they're as cool to look at as they are to hear — all on a gloss black base and in a cabinet that looks cool anywhere. Ideal for medium-large-size rooms where you want plenty of power and volume.
Pop the hood
Pop the grille and what you see is Pure Energy: from the crystal-clear 1" dome tweeter to the 6.5" Kevlar™ woofers and a 5.5" midrange, there's enough power to slam you back in your chair. Using Kevlar for cone construction gives the woofer both light weight for quick reaction and superior rigidity to handle increased output levels. Ribbed Elliptical Surround technology cuts distortion, so all you hear is audio the way it was meant to sound.
Ribbed elliptical sound
The patented Ribbed Elliptical Surrounds that encircle your RC-70's woofers are unlike any other. By changing the shape of the speaker surround to an ellipse, rather than the traditional "half roll," distortion is reduced dramatically. Side benefits include increased excursion and larger piston area, allowing for greater efficiency. The cast basket woofers also feature this technology, allowing the surround to stretch and contract as it moves, eliminating dimpling.
Aluminum dome tweeters
Aluminum dome tweeters combine the wide dispersion characteristics and superior off-axis response of a dome design with firm, but lightweight aluminum. A staple of audiophile-grade speakers, the aluminum dome tweeter features low distortion, flat frequency response and smooth acoustic dispersion.
Frequency response and why you care
Frequency response is how well a speaker reproduces every frequency in a human's audible spectrum. Since most humans can hear from approximately 20Hz to 20kHz (20 cycles per second which is deep bass, to 20,000 cycles per second which is very high frequencies), this measurement depicts how wide of a spectrum the speaker can reproduce. It is important to note that although some speakers can play a wide range of frequencies, the most important fact is ensuring it plays all frequencies at the same level. A speaker that, for example, reproduces more high frequencies than low frequencies will sound "bright" in comparison to speakers with a smooth response.

The Energy RC-70 loudspeaker is overall an impressive design. A true three way speaker house in a smaller than normal cabinet with low frequency capability normally reserved for much larger systems. There are two things that keep me from giving these the highest possible rating. First, they are a little too revealing of sibilance on female vocals. While listening to several of my reference tracks Mary Black, Ricki Lee Jones, Holly Cole the vocal sibilance emanating from the tweeter was much too present. I've been listening to B&W DM640s and Dahquist DQ-10s for the last 20 plus years and am accustomed to a much smoother response in this regard. Second, I was a little suprised and taken back when I saw the plate on the back of the speaker that said made in China. I thought I'd purchased a North American product.

I was hesitant on buying towers because of a bad experience in the past. I had the Energy RC-Micros for a 5.1 set up but the front stage sounded.. empty. The RC70s went on sale and I did a ton of research on them and could not find one single bad comment about them. I bought them, hooked them up and they sounded very flat for what I was expecting. I then learned they needed about 100 hours of break in. Play some Jazz for about 2 weeks while I was at work. I got a chance to let them rip recently and the louder I played, the better they sounded. Not an ounce of distortion from them at all!! I was VERY impressed. I was torn between these or the V6.3s. For anyone else that is on the fence as I was, I have NO regrets getting these over the very expensive V6.3s. They are definitely the deal of the century!

First ,Id like to say the customer service at Vanns is excellent.I had an issue with a damaged speaker cosmetic in which it was dealt with quickly and with no hassles.
Upon listening to these I was impressed with the overall sound , but as time went on I became more impressed as I got closer to the 100 hrs needed to make them really come alive. My setup utilizes an HK avr635 and an Outlaw lfm 1 plus sub. Im streaming audio thru a Maverick Audio Tube Magic D1 DAC. With this configuration these speakers really put out some incredible sound .After break in, Please take the time to properly dial these in.Subtle changes in your receiver settings can make a big difference. You must experiment to get it right, and once you do, you too will be in audio heaven. The sound is so pure, detailed and dynamic. These speakers give a wide and deep sound stage with excellent imaging. The speakers themselves virtually disappear with good source material. They are very neutral,, junk in, junk out, so be careful of your source material. Before my purchase I listened to several different floor standing speakers, some which cost more than twice as much as these. None could compare to the sound of these. Some would lack highs, mid range or bass accuracy. These are extremely accurate in all three and you really dont need a sub.If you do,dial it in carefully. Worth every penny. Get Em while you can

At the price that Vanns has on this speaker i just could not resist not getting it. Every now and then they drop the price by $100. So you get a $1,000 speaker at almost 3rd the price. at 60lb per speaker i was worried about shipping, but Vanns has double boxed it and added couchions. The speakers arrived in perfect condition. i have opened them up and tested them. The sound is excellent, but i know it will get even better once i have about 100hr on them. if you are looking at these speakers you have probably found the reviews elsewhere and know enough about them. i just bought them for my future basement, so after testing them i put them back in the box and stored them until summer time. you just cant beat them at this price or even at 600-700 range well may be Veritas at this price could be a better choice. so if you are looking for a full range speaker this is one of the best. This speaker has received so many reviews on the web that you can easily buy it without listening to it. Thats what i did. Im no audiophile, but i know a great value when i see one, and i have no doubt that this is one of the top speakers under $1,0000 bucks.

You never see people buying speakers like this anymore, he said. Theyre always getting satellite speakers. They sound good, but NOTHING compares to the soundstage a loudspeaker produces! He was so right. The speakers produce a dynamic soundstage, large and inviting. The detail is superb and the harmonal balance neutral and natural. Im ecstatic about the purchase and would recommend these anyday to friends and family. If youve got the coin, pick them up. You wont be disappointed!

I had been wanting to upgrade my speakers for quite awhile now, but had been on the fence as to what to buy. I had listened to the CF-70s and wasnt quite as impressed with them as I thought I would be. Then I listened to the Def Tech BP 8020ST and loved the clarity of them, but wasnt a big fan of the price. Researching, I found out that the CF-70s had been somewhat Klipsch-ified since Energys buyout by them. All the forums said that if you wanted the true Energy sound you needed to get the RC series, as it was the last series developed by the old Energy team. When Vanns put the RC-70 on sale I just couldnt resist and blindly bought them. And I am so glad that I did. Before I get to the speaker let me just say. I ordered these from Vanns through Amazon at 1 AM, and they were at my doorstep in less than 72 hours. Im only a state away from the shipping facility, but that is still very impressive. All my home audio will be bought from Vanns from now on. The RC-70s seemed small at first, but considering my last pair of speakers were a 12 pair of Cerwins I guess thats to be expected. Size aside, these speakers are absolutely gorgeous. Having seen the other speakers in this price range, I can say that in my opinion these are definitely the best looking pair you could buy. Whether the grill is on or off, they have a very modernrefined look to them. The black ash finish matches my entertainment center and components perfectly. The silver in the woofers and the trim give them a nice pop and keep them from being plain. On to the music. The first thing I did after placing my speakers was listen to New Orleans by Portugal. The Man off of the album Censored Colors. This song and album is a favorite of mine. The music coming from the speakers was very clean. When the bass line kicked in though... thats when I realized just how great these speakers were. I could here every little pluck of the bass. I have heard people say speakers in this price range suffer from midrange clarity, definitely not these monsters. These speakers have dominated every genre Ive thrown at them rap, death metal, classical, alternative, etc. As I write this review Im listening to the Unplugged album by Alice in Chains and it sounds like the band is right in front of me. Movies and TV are the same story. Lots of clarity and the soundstage is amazing. These speakers are ventriloquists, they can throw a sound so far left or right its hard to believe theyre the source of it. The fact that these speakers are $50 cheaper than the newerlesser CF models is incredible. The sound produced by these things is well worth $1000 for the pair and then some. They really open up after a couple dozen hours of listening. I would highly recommend getting a pair before Energy finally decides to stop producing them.

A friend of mine bought a set of these a few months back and I have been listening to them could not wait to buy my own. I bought some RC-10s at first figuring that when I bought he RC-70s the RC-10s would just be moved to surrounds. These speakers are about the best I have ever heard or have owned. I replaced a set of Polk RT-800s that I thought sounded good until I listened to the RCs. My set up is simple Onkyo HC RT160, Energy RC-LCR center, RC-70 fronts and RC-10s for the rear surround. I also have a set of Energy C-50s that I have not set up yet and not sure I will. The sound is amazing. I spent the required time breaking them in for 100 hours, my kids did not like it that much but they will survive. Also, I want to say how awesome Vanns is. I ordered the RC-70s on Friday and they were delivered on Monday then I ordered the RC-LCR on Saturday morning and it was delivered on Tuesday. Their customer service is incredible and I would highly recommend them to anyone.

I had been running some Mission 703 towers for the last 7 years and while the clarity and high end was there, the bass was always muddy and a little boomy. Ive always been an Energy fan but hadnt had the budget to step up the game. To put it bluntly - the RC-70 is one of the best speakers you can possible buy for under $2000. If you break them in properly and give them enough power, the sound quality from these cant really be beat. They go LOUD - and I really mean LOUD. Shake your room, and the one next to it. The clarity of the full range is phenomenal - not a note missed anywhere in the spectrum. A good speaker doesnt just have to sound rich and full while the volume is cranked all the time either. The power rating for this is 250 watts RMS. That means you need to be feeding it high-current, discreet power, from a high-end amp. Dont bother unless you can give it at least 200 watts rms. Not max, but rms power. I have it bi-amped with my Pioneer VSX-1326-K 7.2 receiver the identical Canadian version of the VSX-53 Elite, so its giving them 220 watts RMS each, flawlessly. Since these speakers dont have a built-in subwoofer system, I would still advise buying a sub to fill in the raw bass power to match the power and volume of the mid-range and high-end that these produce. Not a flaw really.. The speakers accurately hit sounds down to 32hz, but just if youre a big bass fan, you cant quite feel the real kick from 6.5 woofers. That may just be to personal taste, and you need to be careful to set the sub to the right levels so you dont overdo it. I would advise the Veritas 10 sub to go along with it. 300 watts rms, 1200 watts max. To close this off, I have heard these compared to speakers from Klipsch, Polk Audio, KEF, Mirage, and Cerwin Vega.. Polk audio focuses too much on bass, Klipsch focuses too much on midrange and that irritating-sounding horn tweeter, Cerwin Vega speakers just focus on being as loud as possible.. KEF and Mirage are the only competitors and the Veritas 6.3 but for the price point that Vanns has for these, they can NOT be beat. Even vs the upgraded Veritas.. They are really just about identical sounding but with a minor face-lift. Personally I prefer the wood veneer of the RC to the piano black finish of the Veritas. Save a few hundred bucks and get the RC-70 while theyre still available. Just amazing. Ill be keeping them until I win the lottery.

I was worried that there would not be much difference in these and my RC-10s but it is definately a worthwhile and very noticeable upgrade.

Details in movies and music I have never heard before are popping up, everything sounds more full, and the soundstage is great for my room. Also, these speakers are warm my own preference and dont overwhelm me with harsh bright tones while still providing the higher pitched details. As far as their size and styling goes, they are not overly tall at all. However, they are high enough to be close to ear-level when seated on my viewing rooms couch. The black ash wood finish is fantastic and my wife even finds these towers which are much larger than past tiny satellites we have owned to be highly attractive. I am also using the grills to protect the components of the speakers and love the easy magnetic feature of the grills. I have had the Energy RC-70s for six months now and I can say that I am quite pleased with them.
I will get the negatives out of the way first. The first negative is that the speaker arrived with a busted corner. This was partially the fault of the shipping company I am sure, but almost every single speaker purchased had problems with cracked Styrofoam, so Energys packing materials need some work. The second problem is that the replacement speaker that I received had a defective driver that appeared after a month or so of playback. The driver was easy to replace but made me question the quality control on the speaker itself. The last negative and it not much of one, is that if users expect to not use a sub with these speakers, then you may be disappointed with low end punch below 60 Hz.
The good is that when everything is working correctly, that the speakers sound really really good. The detail and smoothness of everything is quite impressive. They blend really well with RC-LCRs and RC-10s, even though the center channel does need a slight db boost compared to the RC-70s. If you dont have a high quality sub with these speakers, you will want to get one or just run your fronts at full range. Bass even down to low frequencies is quite good, but they do loose a bit of punch at low frequency ranges hence the need for a sub if you want that extra kick. I have compared these directly with Paradigm Monitor 11s and even though they are similar sounding, the RC-70s are much smoother sounding speaker. Some other speakers may sound like they have more punch overall, but you when you hear them side by side you hear there is a level of distortion or harshness that is making it seem more punchy. If you like boomy music, then these speakers are probably not for you, but if you like to hear detail and listen to music at high volumes without it hurting your ears, then these are for you.
I got my RC-70s on special through Vanns so naturally my opinion on the current price is that its a little high, but I would definitely put them in the running even at the higher price range. I would give it 5s across the board if it wasnt for the the problems listed at the beginning and the current price being higher than what I paid. Hope it this helps a bit with your decision making process. Even with my problems, Vanns did a great job of coming through and addresing my concerns.

I listen mostly to music and for music, the RC-70 delivers the goods. The imaging, sound stage, detail, and above all - clarity are outstanding. The dispersion angle is wide enough that you have more than just a love seat sweet spot. No perceptible distortions at moderate or loud volumes. Ive listened to mid and high-grade Klipsch, mid-grade JBL and Polk Audio speakers and that is what I am basing assessment on. RC70s allow me to hear new details in my music collection, as well as highlighting the flaws I never knew existed. Though you could back them against the wall using the included port plugs, to get all the clear bass that you paid for, you need to get these speakers 18-24 away from the wall. That spacing distance, along with the significant depth of the speaker will really take up a generous footprint in your listening room. If you dont have the space, you may be better off with a smaller tower speaker. The speakers are tall and somewhat tippy side-to-side. If you live in earthquake country, youll want to take measures to stabilize them, or at least make sure that they fall into something cushioned. A con is the manual no specifications - let alone frequency or impedance plots, only minimal placement and care instructions. The rosenut finish is gorgeous a deep burgundy brown. It is not as dark as the web photos suggest, but dark enough that it wouldnt look odd next to Brazilian hardwood or dark walnut or espresso entertainment centers. My wife initially grumbled about the size of the speakers but concluded her complaint with .. but that wood is just stunning. She was sold. The speakers sound great but both of us cant stop admiring how good they look - real eye candy! Dealing with Vanns, from order placement to shipping and delivery, gets 5 stars as well.

The speakers just arrived 3 days from MT to TX and I have just unpacked them. The photos do not do them justice. The cabinets are NOT veneer, but rather furniture grade wood. With Vanns great price I recommend these to anyone in the market. My only regret may be not buying the RC-70s. While they are not yet connected - they are Energys so no doubts there.
Kudos to Vanns and to Energy!!
