For a $160 speaker with only a 5 inch driver, you'd expect this speaker to be short on bass. You'd be wrong. The rear ported enclosure, tight controlled driver and solid construction create TOO MUCH bass for a small room. In a larger room you can tune the speakers by pulling them away from the wall, but not in a small room. So you either need to use tone controls or other forms of EQ to tone them down if you must 'bookshelf them' and you'll get a very pleasing and rich sound. For my use, they were meant to go in my bedroom on 'Zone 2' which has not such controls, and that ended up being a bad idea. I picked up a pair of Primus 150s, which cost half as much and aren't as sonically beautiful, but they fire fully to the front and can be placed closer to walls without bass amplification. Don't think I am down on the Beta10 though. They produce VERY accurate sound. I've already tried them in my home theater as LR and they give fuller and more pleasing sound then my more expensive M&K 850s. Even though they are rated at 100W, they handled my 205W Parasound amp with ease, since 'too much' clean power is far better for a quality speaker than clipping and distorting low powered amps. I also tried them in my game room, and that 22x22 foot room suits them well, so that's where they will go for good. I have a sub-bass speaker REL that I might mate to them in that room, but I'm not sure if I need it. It's amazing that these small speakers can fill a room of that size while still at -20dB volume! The Beta series is a marvel of engineering and provides clean, powerful sound that is not fatiguing. After also getting a Beta C250 and watching Tim Burton's Batman using the Beta10C250 setup in place of my M&K 850s, I'm sold on the Betas and will be SELLING my other speakers. I'm still debating Beta20 or Beta40 for my new LR in the home theater due to my powerful amps, but the Beta10 would not disappoint with a good Harman Kardon receiver. HK provide very clean power, and Harman makes both products, which is one reason they seem to mate so well I've tested the 20 and 50 with the AVR635 at CircuitCity. Bottom line, the Beta series is POWERFUL and clean, and it's up to you to assign them to roles that they fit best. If you prefer a bright, 'punchy' speaker, look elsewhere, maybe Bose or low-end Polk. But if you like accurate full sound on a budget, the Beta10 and Beta20 will knock your socks off. If you need a good center, the C250 will fit the bill and matches the drivers of the 10, 40 and 50, and the C360 is more of a good thing with drivers that match the 20s. And if you want absolutely amazing full range sound, the Beta 50 and the slightly less capable 40 will blow you away. PS - the finish of these speakers is striking. They look and feel like real wood, and the grills are metal with fabric lining and a strong plastic structure, far more solid than the Primus grills or the metal or fabric grilles on the M&Ks I own and have owned.
