Very versatile
Great speakers don’t have to be behemoths to sound good, and nothing proves that truth more than the Energy V5.1 bookshelf monitors. The V5.1 is a versatile speaker, perfectly happy lending its incredible sound at the front of the room as part of your main home theatre or stereo set, or the back of the room by providing all the right emphasis to truly surround yourself with sound. Combining classic styling, and proprietary Energy technologies developed with their over 30 years of audio experience and research, the V5.1 Bookshelf monitors make a perfect addition to your home theatre system no matter where you choose to use them.
Sonus ex machina
To create such world-class sound, Energy utilizes a unique combination of technology and materials. Their isolated aluminum dome tweeter is paired with a 5.25 woofer that utilize Energy’s patented Ribbed Elliptical Surround. This technology uses an ellipse-shaped driver surround to reduce distortion, improve efficiency, and increase movement resulting in a greater range of sound. Energy’s Convergent Source Module (CSM) isolates the tweeter in separate housing in order to minimize interaction between drivers, reducing noise and allowing for greater power handling, as well as creating a wider dispersion of sound. Combining these two technologies creates a sensitive speaker that can easily fill your room with incredible, accurate audio.

Received these yesterday. Opened them up right away, hooked them up to an amp, and started breaking them in. The first few hours they didn't impress, but I know to wait a while before evaluating speakers. After a few hours, they improved. These aren't my first Energy speakers, so I knew what to expect. They're clear, detailed, nuetral, versatile. Highs are extended, clear and smooth, mids are rich, bass is solid & tight. They are also beautiful to behold. They sound great with everything I throw at them hard rock, electronica, acoustic instruments, voices all sound great. At full MSRP, they may be other speakers to consider, but at less than $400pr. they were a no-brainer for me. One consideration is that the Energy RC-10s cost even less and sound just as good... FWIW, I'm listening to iTunes Apple loss-less encoding- Blue Circle Audio USB DAC - Lepai LP2020 - Energy speakers. Blue Jean cables for speaker wire & interconnects...

In the rosenut finish, these speakers are as beautiful as everyone else has said they are. They look expensive and they feel expensive -- a rap on the cabinets suggests they are really solidly built. Unfortunately, the beauty is only skin deep. The aluminum tweeter Energy has chosen for these is pretty reedy, and can get harsh quickly at moderate listening levels, at least compared to the much smoother silk domes in some of my other speakers. Seems like Energy offset the cost of those gorgeous cabinets by cutting corners on the components. Maybe the tweeter issue is just a preference thing. But much more troubling is that, less than a month after I bought these, one of the tweeters quickly developed a nasty habit of cutting out randomly during listening -- sometimes every few minutes. Must be a short or something between the crossover and the tweeter, because a rap on that solid cabinet usually brings it back...for a while. Vanns advises that I not open the cabinet to investigate since it will violate the warranty, but I am on my own for shipping charges if I want it fixed. So that warranty is not really worth a whole lot... Overall, these DO sound pretty good, even powered by a small integrated amp, and especially when paired with a small sub. But QC seems to be an issue. I wish instead of the gimmicky white gloves, mine had come with a broomstick so I could fix my tweeter without having to get off the couch.

A a sweet deal, bought the pair for $199. open box, everything came with it, even the white gloves. The speakers were in perfect condition. Powered them with an old Yammy Integrated amp, but they sounded bright, I didn't want to send them back, cause it was such a good deal. I later got the Marantz 1501 on sale for $249. After the auto calibration, the speakers sounded fantastic, they opened up. The bass was tight and deeper than expected, the highs were sweet and melodious, sound stage was wide and deep. They look amazing with the covers off, real high end. Later I may buy the 6.2 , cause they look and sound so good. Both music and movies sounded like it should. They are revealing, bad recording will sound horrible, good recordings with sound fantastic.!!!! Connected with 14 guage Monster cables. Perfect for a small to medium rooms....I luv em.......

These spreakers are amazing. Sound better than B&Ws and PSB monitors that my friends own. They can't believe the sound coming from these things. The highs and vocals are crystal clear and the bass is great for this size speaker. I have really cranked these speakers, they were not at all stressed or distorted. This speaks highly of the build quality and speaker materials used in these speakers. I have them paired up with a 12in Velodyne sub to cover the bass. Sound is phenominal! The sound put out by this threesome is better than my PSB 8in towers. For the price I paid I may be ordering another pair. I have owned alot of good speakers over the years and these are now at the top of my list of truly accurate loudspeakers.

I bought these speakers to use with vintage Kenwood Eleven III receiver. I needed speakers that could handle the power from the receiver, but I also am not an audiophile and didnt want to break the bank on a hugely expensive set of speakers! More importantly, I live in small, city apartment so I didnt want something that was going to dominate my smallish living room.
These speakers fit the bill perfectly! They were affordable, and look amazing. I had read other reviews that talked about the finish quality, and I would agree these speakers seems to be extremely high quality, and I love the black finish a lot! The magnetic grills are also an aesthetic feature that I really enjoy.
As far as sound goes, I think these speakers sound great. I have my ipod going into the auxiliary jacks on my receiver, and I mostly listen to music this way or I turn on the radio occasionally. There is a surprising amount of bass coming from these speakers though not overpowering, and my music sounds wonderful. I have not tested how loud these speakers can go, mostly because I dont want to disturb my neighbors, but when I do push the volume up they seem to handle it just fine. I also love that these are monitorflat speakers, so I can adjust the levels on my receiver if I choose, but otherwise without tweaks they just sound nice!
Finally, the size is perfect. I stuck them inside one of the shelves of an Ikea Expedit bookshelf, and they are a perfect fit!
I looked at a lot of speakers and read a lot of reviews, and I became a little overwhelmed with the choices. Luckily, I settled on these speakers. If you are an average listener looking for great speakers that look nice, arent going to be huge or require an additional subwoofer, will play your music nicely at loud and soft levels, and are very affordable, I would strongly urge you to stop looking and just buy these speakers! Youll like them a lot.

I have to say hands down this is the nicest bookshelf speaker I have ever owned. Along with its beauty is its sound quality. I have been a fan of Energy for many years, and still own a pair of their old Pro-Series bookshelf speakers from the 90s , but these have managed to blow me away. Right now they are hooked to my Onkyo 809, and turned way up I cant seem to get any distortion out of them at all. I listen to just about every genre of music and they truly shine. I just sold my B@W 804s hooked to a Rotel 5x200 amp, and I dont remember better sound coming from them at all. After listening to these I went ahead and purchased the Veritas center channel as well. I now have a great soundstage for a fraction of the price. If you are looking for a beautiful speaker, with wonderful sound and a great price, you wont be disappointed!

I matched these up with the Energy V-Mini-C center channel, an NAD receiver with optical input, a Panasonic DVD player with optical output, and bi-wired the speakers with Monster plain speaker wires with banana plug clamp-on ends. For comparison, I also have B&W DM602 S.3 stereo speakers and the matching center channel. These Energy monitors were meant to show off Nora Jones voice. They have a wide sweet spot, which makes it easy to sit near the entertainment center and soak in Noras wonderful vocals. There were a couple points in songs where I could hear a little hoarseness in her voice, which added to the feeling of being live in the room with her. Really wonderful, but as the speakers accentuated her voice, they somewhat de-emphasized the quiet accompanying instruments. If you really like vocals, these speakers could be great for you. On the other end of the spectrum, the Energy monitors also really perform when playing Massive Attack at loud volume. My wifes eyes lit up when I cranked up the volume and she heard the full range, all the way down into decent bass, come across crisp and clear. The monitors were positioned about 12 from the wall and I ended up leaving the bass ports open. The bass sounded fairly tight, not too boomy or huffy, no matter how loud the volume. Really great. But for other music, like Jean Michelle Jarres 1980s era electronic music, the Energy monitors sounded a bit too bright and fatiguing for my preferences but Im used to very soft sounding B&W speakers. I think many folks would really enjoy the Energy monitors and wouldnt be bothered at all. And yes, the rose wood cabinets are astoundingly beautiful. Rich, warm wood grain even the wife will love...

These are amazing sounding speakers. I purchased these to eventually use with my computer when I complete the set up. I have other Energy products so I thought I would look to them for bookshelf size. Right now I replaced a couple of front speakers in my main TV room with these. They take up a small area and give a big sound stage back in return. I will enventually move them into a different room, but they sound so good they will remain where they are for now. I heard compliments on the both the styling and sound they bring to the room so far. They are built very well and I figure they will last a while. I like the Rosewood finish, its glossy, different and shows how unique the brand is. Anyone looking for impressive style and good sounding speakers will love to have a pair of these. They offer a high RMS, five way binding posts, good sound stage, low distortion, unique style, and a compact footprint. Isnt that what we all want now-a-days?

these speakers should come with a warning label. they are revealing. sometimes disturbingly so. if the source or your equipment is not up to the task, any flaw will be suddenly obvious in the source, in the amp, in the cables, in the speaker placement. but with high quality equipment, and an excellent recording, the sound expressed is astounding. they reward you for all the care that went in to selecting the right equipment and they show off the production value of the source. to be a bit more specific, if you use primarily digital sources and lack a decent DAC, the speakers will come off as overly bright. with a low quality source recording, or a crispy-sounding ampreceiver, they will sound harsh. they make s*** smell really bad and flowers smell really good. again, they all but require you to run digital sources through a quality DAC the onboard circuitry with high end CD players will do fine, as will digital-oriented setups like those from PeachTree, or something external if that is not an option on that note, Ive been thrilled with audioengines superb entry level D1. Along the same lines they pair well with a tube amp, or a warm solid state. with that said, lets not kid ourselves. these are bright speakers. they are not for everyone. they are not warm and polite. they are detailed and stunningly accurate. they are not fill the room with pretty sound. they are my god, if im quiet, i can hear miles fingers on his trumpet valves. on that note, they excel with jazz from brass to vocals to snare, they sound glorious. same for electronica, smallish classical ensembles and solo instruments or vocals. on the other hand, driving rock, and more bombastic classical, is a bit less impressive--the tweeters occasionally overpower the mix and the sound of the woofer can feel trapped inside the cabinet a female vocalist seems to be standing in your room, while a bass guitar seems stuck behind a closed door. much of this can be resolved with a decent subwoofer thrown into the system, but this review is for the speakers, not the speakers in conjunction with a sub. on placement, sound dispersion, and imaging energy speakers are noted for their wide dispersion, and these are no exception. but this is not the kind of wide dispersion such that the speakers disappear altogether. although in the sweet spot, the imaging is so precise that you will be able to easily locate each instrument in three dimensional space. in fact, the sweet spot is so sweet, moving out of it feels like a let down. while they still sound wonderful, you lose much of the holographic imaging. there is a reason they bill themselves as monitors. they are an exceptional value at vanns current price, or at anything under $500 a pair. they are a defensible choice up to their MSRP, but there is a lot of competition in the $600-900 range for great sounding speakers--choosing them would be far from a slam dunk at full price. with that said, if you listen to a lot of jazz or other genres mentioned above, andor tend to approach listening to music as an event that merits your undivided attention, you will be rewarded in spades by these speakers.

These little speakers are a true quality product in every respect. Everyone raves about the craftsmanship and finish of the enclosures as well as the beautiful steel speaker surrounds and nickel-plated binding posts. Thats all true and well worthy of note. However, the quality sound produced by these little wonders is awesome. The bass is unbelievably good considering the 5.25 inch ported woofers. The mid-range is very clear and powerful and the highs are excellent with strong impact. They have a great deal of presence and strikingly clear response across the whole sound spectrum. Some may want to augment them with a sub-woofer for a more artificially low bass response, but it isnt really necessary. A great product for those who want both excellent sound and obvious attention to aesthetic detail.

Im using these as surrounds, but have tested them out in normal stereo, as well. These were on sale for $179.99 each when I bought them -- an incredible value for such a great speaker. Bookshelf speakers in general offer a lot of bang for the buck, and that is true here. What strikes me about these is how natural and life-like the sounds. Some speakers will have more detailed highs, or more punctuated lows, but the V-5.1, in my opinion, sounds life-like, giving the illusion that the action or music is really happening in the room. This is the kind of sounds I like in a speaker. I also really dig the style of this Veritas line. The finish is a high gloss black, but not as prone to finger prints as I would have thought and prints easily wipe away, plus the corners and edges strike a good balance between sharp and rounded. These also look great with the grills on or off.

I was a little skeptical when I ordered the V5.1 to replace my older Energy eXL. Does this sound better? Is quality up to per before Energy acquired by the Klipsh? But the sale price was just too good, and since I wanted to get a nicer looking, smaller speakers to match the interior of my new house, so I took plunge. The finish piano black is very nice. The sound character is similar to exl, but better. Imaging and sound stage is very good. Transition is faster, especially noticeable when listening to snare drum. Vocals are clear. Bass is surprisingly strong for the size but it doesnt go low enough to play bass solo line. So I connected an 8inch powered sub, which made music sounds fuller. Some people think these speakers are bright, but with my Jolida hybrid, it is not bright . Maybe crisp. At least not any brighter than older Energy. Sometimes mid bass gets a bit boomy, but it may be my room. The speaker placement may help, but I cant really move them any further from the back wall, so I may try some tweak on the room and the port. One potential downside is you cant use a banana plug to hook them up. But overall it was a great purchase.

Sound Quality Ive spent the last few months looking to buy new speakers. Ive listened to B&W, Kef, and more brands than I can remember. The only speakers that come close to these were the B&W CM series. These are a bit crisper at the top end giving you a Klipsch style sound but with all the smoothness of a B&W. WOW! what a difference! Dialog is crystal clear at low volumes, and music sounds great. We bought the piano rosewood finish - it is beautiful. The subwoofer may be overkill, as the Veritas puts out plenty of bass for normal use. Vanns had a fantastic deal on these speakers - $150 - $200 off anywhere else. The delivery fulfillment was through Amazon, and worked just like Amazon prime. The order process on Vanns site was very smooth. The bottom line I am hearing things I never heard before. I am pretty much a classical music listener and listening to chamber music and baroque music has taken on a new pleasure. The crispness and definition make listening to period performances even more enjoyable. The finish on these speakers is so pristine that you will want to keep the enclosed white gloves nearby in the event you have to move them. They look good and they sound good.

For $399 each, you cant buy a better bookshelf speaker. You could pay more but the build and soyund quality are best in class. I am using as Front Width speakers with a Denon receive. The detail is astounding with these Energy speakers.
