HOP Woofers

In order for a speaker to produce sound, it needs to move air. In some cases, like today's multichannel movie soundtracks, speakers need to move a lot of air. The dual 5 1/4" woofers in this center channel speaker use a mineral filled injection molded Highly Oriented Polyolefin (HOP) material that improves the strength of the driver cone, minimizing distortion and providing better bass and mid-range reproduction.

Nano-Fine Tweeter

Not forgetting the higher end of the spectrum, Sony uses a ferro fluid cooled tweeter design that transforms voice coil heat to magnetic circuits for better high power reproduction. The dome style tweeter is constructed of a special Nano composite that produces a tighter, smoother surface that decreases resistance and therefore creates less heat than traditional pulp compound tweeters. With broad frequency band and a wide operating temperature range, Nano composite is clearly superior, providing virtually flat response all the way up to 50kHz while low loss in the ultra high frequency above 20kHz is held to a minimum. Everything within your range of hearing is accurately reproduced to help you enjoy the soundtrack the way the director intended.

Magnetic Shielding

You want to position your center channel speaker above your TV, so dialog seems to come from the screen as in a movie theater. This may mean the most convenient location is directly on top of your television, or at least in very close proximity. With this in mind, this speaker is magnetically shielded to prevent magnetic fields within the speaker from interfering with the picture on the screen. Operating a non-shielded speaker too close to your TV and other sensitive components can actually cause damage (much like these same magnetic fields can damage the magnetic strips on credit cards). Be kind to your components, make sure your speakers are shielded.

My 1st time delving into the world of home theatre...wanted to keep price low...so far I love this speaker, especially because it was cheaper online than at Best Buy where I tested it out. Learning that home theatre is a slippery slope, so appreciated the high valuelow cost.
