Keepin' It Real
So, you're considering a subwoofer because you know that adding volume at sub frequencies is like adding a third dimension to your music. Well, this DPS12 subwoofer will be an excellent addition if you meet any or all of the following conditions: 1) You only have small, or shelf-mounted speakers. 2) You have, or want to get, a home theater system. 3) You love that deep bass only a subwoofer can deliver. 4) You want realistic sound, especially in a larger room. Because they aren't specifically designed to handle lower channels, most speakers can't produce the deep resounding frequencies a separate subwoofer can. Simply adding a little bass will make a huge improvement in sound quality-even with the simplest system. A subwoofer is an important component of any good sound system because it lets you engage another one of your five senses-so that you can more fully experience music and movies. A subwoofer will let you hear more, as well as let you physically FEEL sound for an emotional and physical experience. Imagine being able to fully engage three of your five senses; you'll be able to watch, hear, and feel movies for a R-E-A-L enveloping "virtual/sonic reality" experience!
DSP-Controlled
As part of Velodyne's DPS series (Digital Power Slot), the DPS12 brings you Digital Signal Processing (DSP), which has never before been so affordably available in a subwoofer. The slot-loading is tuned to deliver maximum bass in the deep frequencies (as opposed to slot-loading found in full range speakers). Embedded computer chips in this subwoofer control all audio functions with digital accuracy as it analyzes and controls the audible audio signals. In conventional speaker systems, the manipulation of the audio signal is done in the analog domain where all the electronic parts have the signal pass through them, and as a result, they alter (or even degrade) that signal in their own way. Additionally, each electronic part has some natural variation, and the sum of those variations can cause the performance of each woofer to be slightly different. But, with DSP since control is done in the digital domain there is much less variance in parts and sound. The signal is run through an analog-to-digital converter, then immediately fed into a DSP chip where it is processed and converted back to analog for delivery to the amplifier. Because there is only one part to digital processing there can't be any inconsistency between parts. This makes DSP controlled subwoofers faithful to the original input signal and play with less distortion. Another benefit of digital control is that it lets you manage and tune all parts of the signal. For example, all the presets, volume control, night mode, low-pass crossover/slope, subsonic frequency/slope and overdrive protection are controlled by this high-speed computer technology so you get the cleanest, deepest and highest bass output while maintaining a flat, detailed and accurate frequency response.
Won't Leave You Hanging
This subwoofer incorporates anti-clipping and over excursion protection to maximize usable amp power and provide maximum available cone travel-without overdriving. When driven hard, many amplifiers clip the output, distort the signal, and don't drive the cone to full excursion, or the distance a driver travels to create an audio frequency. The extra strength of the driver is basically wasted. This results in a subwoofer that is pushed beyond its limits and won't play up to its potential. And, what output the unit DOES have is distorted or otherwise sub-par. The weakest link of the chain brings the quality of the whole system down to that level. However, because the anti-clipping circuitry it is possible to achieve the maximum allowable performance without overdriving. This means you get deeper bass extension, bigger impact, and cleaner sound. Utilizing this exclusive technology, the DPS12 subwoofer reproduces music and home theater with less audible distortion found in competitive products. You don't have to sacrifice output or dynamics for precise music and special effects.
Flexible Crossover With "Subwoofer Direct"
These powered subwoofers will seamlessly integrate with the rest of your audio system. The amplifier panel has both line-level input jacks for connecting to the subwoofer output jack on the receiver, and speaker level input connectors for connecting to the speaker output posts. Their adjustable 40Hz-120 Hz low-pass crossover allows the sub to match ideally with any main speaker and the acoustics of a room and divides the incoming electrical signals into the appropriate frequency ranges. The bass goes to the subwoofer and everything else goes to the other speakers. The low-pass adjustment of 40Hz lets you reproduce the lower frequencies, while setting it to 120 Hz will limit it to 120 Hz and below. There's no hard and fast rule about which frequencies are best, and part of the fun of owning hi-fi stereo equipment is experimenting to find your own unique audio taste. There's also the exclusive Subwoofer Direct feature that lets the subwoofer receive and play unaltered output of the Low Frequency Effect (that ".1" channel) of a receiver or processor. Because it doesn't pass the signal through a second crossover, there is no loss of impact or accuracy that can often be created in competitive models. Subwoofer Direct allows highest levels of performance and full compatibility with all digital surround processors, for today and tomorrow.
Customized Listening With Preset Modes
Use the four presets to effortlessly experience maximum impact for each type of music. Enjoy your bass heavy beats with R&B-Rock mode, but switch to the Jazz-Classical to get purely accurate bass reproductions when you want to fully experience those favorite masterpieces with wide-range dynamics. And then, when it's time for games or movie theater replication, the Game and Movie presets will let you experience resounding special effects, which are especially exhilarating during the big action soundtracks. Imagine not only being able to deeply hear those deeply authoritative explosions, but literally feel them as well! And because you want to get carried away in sound, but don't necessarily want to keep everyone else engaged in action, the exclusive Night Mode allows polite, late-night listening that won't disturb sleeping kids, or the neighbors. With the auto/on feature and volume control that allow you to balance the output from the subwoofer to the main speakers in your system you'll be able to easily operate this amp. And, many of these features are easily accessible with the unique front-touch panel control, which allows single-button operation.
