Who Needs A Woofer?
So, what's the deal with getting a woofer? Well, woofers add volume at sub frequencies; they're like adding another dimension to your music and you should consider a powered subwoofer for several reasons: 1) You only have small, or shelf-mounted speakers. 2) You have, or want to get, a home theater system. 3) You love that deep bass only a subwoofer can deliver. 4) You want realistic sound, especially in a larger room. Because they aren't specifically designed to handle lower channels, most speakers can't produce the deep, resounding frequencies a separate subwoofer can. Simply adding a little bass will make a huge improvement in sound quality-even with the simplest system. A subwoofer is an important component of any good sound system because it lets you engage another one of your five senses-so that you can more fully experience music and movies. A subwoofer will let you hear more, as well as let you physically FEEL sound for an emotional and physical experience. Imagine being able to fully engage three of your five senses; you'll be able to watch, hear, and feel movies for a R-E-A-L enveloping "virtual/sonic reality" experience!
DSP-Controlled
As part of Velodyne's new DLS-R series, the DLS3750R brings you Digital Signal Processing, which has never before been available in a powered subwoofer with such affordability. Embedded computer chips in this subwoofer control all audio functions with digital accuracy as it analyzes and controls the audible audio signals. In conventional speaker systems, the manipulation of the audio signal is done in the analog domain where all the electronic parts have the signal pass through them, and as a result, they alter (or even degrade) that signal in their own way. Additionally, each electronic part has some natural variation, and the sum of those variations can cause the performance of each woofer to be slightly different. But, with DSP since control is done in the digital domain, there is much less variance in parts, thus also less distortion in sound. The signal is run through an analog-to-digital converter, then immediately fed into a DSP chip where it is processed and converted back to analog for delivery to the amplifier. Because there is only one part to digital processing there can't be any inconsistency between parts. This makes DSP controlled subwoofers faithful to the original input signal and play with less distortion. Another benefit of digital control is that it lets you manage and tune all parts of the signal. Fore example, all the remote functions, low-bass crossover, phase, anti-clipping and overdrive protection are controlled by this high-speed computer technology so you get the cleanest, deepest and highest bass output while maintaining a flat, detailed and accurate frequency response.
Best-In-Class With Distortion Limiting System
DLS is programmed into each unit's DSP to maximize usable amp power and provide maximum available cone travel without overdriving. When driven hard, the amplifier clips the output, distorts the signal to the subwoofer, and doesn't drive the cone to full excursion, or the distance a driver travels to create an audio frequency. The extra strength of the driver is basically wasted. This results in a subwoofer that is pushed beyond its limits and won't play up to its potential. And, what output the unit DOES have is distorted or otherwise sub-par. The weakest link of the chain brings the quality of the whole system down to that level. However, because the DLS software perimeters of each amp in this series are customized for digital precision it is possible to achieve the maximum allowable performance from both the amplifier and woofer motor structure without overdriving either one. This means you get deeper bass extension, bigger impact, and cleaner sound. Utilizing this exclusive technology, the DLS-R subwoofers reproduce music and home theater with a fraction of the audible distortion found in competitive products and you don't have to sacrifice output or dynamics for precise music and special effects.
Maximum Dynamic Power (MDP) Amplifiers
Lots of continuous (185 watts) and reserve dynamic (375 watts) power of these high-performance Class A/B amplifiers give you those exploding special effects, pulsing percussion, or low sustained notes for dramatic impact. These classy subwoofers are able to accurately reproduce the wide spectrum of low frequency material. In addition, you get custom-designed Extended Excursion Slot-loaded Bass Reflex drivers that are engineered with vented pole-pieces to increase power handling and assure long-term reliability. Quadruple layer, large 2" copper-wound voice coils are specifically matched with massive 2.5 magnets to provide that dynamic bass you can feel right down to your bones! The sensitive, 10" front-firing bass-reflect design of this speaker minimizes the distortion created in port cabinets, while maximizing bass impact. This front-forward energy also makes them great for custom installation so you can make them work with your system however you want.
Flexible Crossover With "Subwoofer Direct"
These powered subwoofers will seamlessly integrate with the rest of your audio system. The amplifier panel has both line-level input jacks for connecting to the subwoofer output jack on the receiver, and speaker level input connectors for connecting to the speaker output posts. Their adjustable 40Hz-120 Hz low-pass crossover allows the sub to match ideally with any main speaker and the acoustics of a room and divides the incoming electrical signals into the appropriate frequency ranges. The bass goes to the subwoofer and everything else goes to the other speakers. The low-pass adjustment of 40Hz lets you reproduce the lower frequencies, while setting it to 120 Hz will limit it to 120 Hz and below. There's no hard and fast rule about which frequencies are best, and part of the fun of owning hi-fi stereo equipment is experimenting to find your own unique audio taste. There's also the exclusive Subwoofer Direct feature that lets the subwoofer receive and play unaltered output of the Low Frequency Effect (that ".1" channel) of a receiver or processor. Because it doesn't pass the signal through a second crossover, there is no loss of impact or accuracy that can often be created in competitive models. Subwoofer Direct allows highest levels of performance and full compatibility with all digital surround processors, for today and tomorrow.
This Remote Keeps Bass Control Handy
With the full-featured remote control, enjoy convenience and adjustable bass from the comfort of your chair. To begin with, this remote lets you balance the subwoofer's output for a seamless interface and timber match with your system's main speakers for a great, compatible sound. Then, it furthermore lets you customize the bass for individual tastes, or you can use the four presets to effortlessly experience maximum impact for each type of music. Enjoy your bass heavy beats with Rock mode, but switch to the Jazz or Classical to get purely accurate bass reproductions when you want to fully experience those favorite masterpieces with wide-range dynamics. And then, when it's time for movie theater replication, the Movie preset will let you experience resounding special effects, which are especially exhilarating on action movie soundtracks. Imagine not only being able to deeply hear those deeply authoritative explosions, but literally feel them as well! And because you want to get carried away in sound, but don't necessarily want to keep everyone else engaged in action, the Night Mode allows polite, late-night listening that won't disturb sleeping kids, or the neighbors. And, if you have really light sleepers, the mute option makes it easy to turn the bass off, without having to disturb your comfy groove by getting up. Another feature that makes late-night movies even more engrossing is the Light Control. It lets you turn off the front light panel so it won't interrupt your night viewing with bright lights in the perimeters of the dark.

Buy it you will like it. This is an excellent sub, and you won’t be disappointed. I wanted a sub woofer designed to deliver room filling bass for the primary purpose of listening to music cd’s and vinyl, and not bass designed for movies, already have a theater setup but can’t imagine that I won’t be disappointed hooking this sub up to an additional theater environment. Wish I had discovered Velodyne when setting up my original theater room. I listen to all types of music. I recently purchased an Onkyo tx 8555 receiver from Vann’s, and wanted more bass.great receiver BTW. I own a pair of Klipsch tower speakers. A Vann’s rep suggested I look at and consider a Velodyne, although pricey, you get what you pay for, and the Vanns rep was right on target. Velodyne has a ‘what are you looking for’ and ‘room sizing chart’ on their website, which was very helpful for me to choose the right size sub for the size of my listening environment. My living room is 13’ wide by 23’ long, with a ceiling height of 8’ and very open, so roughly 2, 392 cubic feet. This is important to consider when you are buying a sub woofer. The sub has to work to fill the room and drive your speakers. This sub has awesome sound and capability. The bass is ‘natural’, best way I can describe it. Placed and tweaked properly, one cannot pinpoint where the sub is in the room, and the sound is incredible, for all types of music. The remote is an awesome feature, allowing tweaking for first time set up a breeze without running to the back of the sub, and after tweaking, can change the phase control, volume, settings, or preselects at the touch of a button, again, without going back and forth to the sub. The remote is also a plus when listening to all genres of music. One can switch from presets of rock and roll to jazz, or ‘dial’ the sub in to suit your needs from across the room. If you want, you can feel the sound through the floor, or rattle the windows, walls, and shelves like a concert, or use the ‘night mode’ for a quieter sound. The cabinet is black, sleek, wood grain look and good solid construction. What sold me on the Velodyne was the sound in my living room and features offered in the remote. Buy it you will like it! Velodyne has a great product.

Replacing an all in one home theater system, with a sound bar and the DLS 3750, for my basement theater room. The bass is deep, booming and rich. It complements the highs of the sound bar perfrectly. The subwoofer is clean smooth lows, unlike my all in one subwoofer I had previously. The remote is very handy and the numerous connections make it easy for any application.

As an audiophile, I've been spoiled for years by my MK1200 series reference Sub. I listen to all types of music, from classical to world music to driving rock and alternative. So when my girlfriend needed a full spectrum sound for her dance studio, I wanted to help her get the most out of her 2.1 system. Choosing a good Sub for the base was critical decision for this medium sized room and came down to a few options. The specs on the Velodyne 3750 R, along with the Velodyne reputation for outstanding Subs was enough to tilt the decision their way. This baby didn't disappoint in any way! The bottom was rich and full with a sensitive crossover accessible from 4 different presets. I was concerned about the potential distortion of a bass reflux Sub, but the DLS Distortion Limiting System yielded clear voicings throughout the bottom on all settings. The remote makes adjusting to different musical genres easy from across the room. Buy this Sub! It is a REAL contender. -DJA

The sub silver looked really good to me when I unpacked it and fits my surround system quite nicely. The silver complements my silver DVD player and new Panasonic SA-XR55 receiver. So how does it sound? It replaced a Paradigm PS-1000 that had died on me after 7 years or so use really well. The silver box is smaller so it pleases me and my wife in color and takes up less room than the Paradigm. I would say there is possibly less low end impact, but the price was great from Vanns and no shipping cost was nice too. I would recommend the sub after about a months listening with no doubts about it adding the low impact we all desire for movies.

This sub is being used as part of a Klipsch 5.1 SF-3 system, and it is absolutely wonderful. I can really only describe it as unobtrusive and at the same time extremely powerful.
It blends well with the Klipsch system and would blend well with any system. It has the power to irritate neighbors, shake walls, scare off cats, and thoroughly anger wives - at least mine. At the same time, it never sounds 'boomy' or flat and has an enormous dynamic range - it can be dialed in with the remote from 'barely hear it' to 'oh my God'.
Before I purchased the sub, I went over to a local store and gave several subs a listen test. The store didn't have a 3750 but carried a 3500. In my opinion, it blew away the comparable JBL, Infinity, and Polk subs and gave the Martin Logan a run for its money - and this was the 8 inch Velodyne. Bottom Line I highly recommend it, and I highly recommend dealing with Vanns.
