Design details

The design of the SKW-204 has a lot to do with its ability to play low notes as intensely as it can. This is a forward-facing sub, which sends the sound waves right towards you, allowing you to feel more of your sound without it being dampened by carpet. I bought this sub for a new home theater system on a budget. It was the cheapest piece of equipment I bought but is likely the best thing to come out of this new system. It fills the room Im in perfectly and will scale to a much larger room once I move. This sub is awesome.

I bought this sub to replace an old Infinity that simply died. It is my basement system where my kids play the wii and sometimes I watch TV or movies. The newer components are all from Vanns, Onkyo receiver, Samsung Blue Ray player and a TCL 40 TV, the speakers are old but good, floor standing Advents. The new sub gave new life to this inexpensive but decent sounding system which is light years better than any HTSIAB redardless of price. The sub goes deep, has tight bass without the annoying booming and very powerfull. I did not do any frequences measurments, but to my fairly well trained ears, it sounds very good expecially since I paid a very small price, lucky me! Pricequality is very important when purchasing electronics. Well done Vanns!

My DT supercude III quit on me. Cant do without a sub. I was low on funds so was looking for something cheap to get by with.This sub is not as tight as my old one, but louder and shakes the house better. This sub will more than get me by. Good sounding base that does not overpower low sounds in movieshow settings. Can be tricky to get output and frequency set at a level so that it doesnt enter standby unnecessarily. I like the fact it came with subwoofer wire to connect to receiver, instructions, and has and onoff switch on the back of unit.

My old subwoofer fried because I plugged it in to a wall outlet instead of a power bar. I thought no problem Ill buy another well known name brand subwoofer and hook it up to my stereo which by the way is a surround sound system. Well, the subwoofer makes a rattling sound when turned up somewhat for music and when used for movies the bass was not as exsplosive as it should be even when adjusting the frequency and output levels. So after some time searching for another subwoofer I got the SKW204 and let me tell you the sound is excellent. Lows are cleaner, highs are bassier without the rattling and my whole system sounds amazing again. And the price was pretty good as well. Very happy with this subwoofer.

If you are looking for a great performing sub for a great price, look no further. This sub stands out because its an Onkyothey make great stuff and because of its low price yet high performance.

Initially I set mine to 25Hz just to see how it handled the lowest of lows and the it did well. The cabinet did not rattle as some have noted and definitely outperformed my expectations. I have been tweaking the crossover since and have been nothing but happy.

I currently have this item paired with a soundbar and it gives the fullness you would expect from an entry to mid level sound system. Love it!

The bass performance vs. the low purchase price is what drew my attention to this product. I am happy to say it delivers in that respect. I am also happy with the style and appearance of this speaker. It is a bit tall, but fits well with my other Onkyo components. I cant say that I am happy with the out of box quality of this speaker. The first one I received arrived with the bass tube loose on the inside of the enclosure. Shipping could have caused this or the glue failed. I dont know for sure. The second one had an issue with the power on indicator light. When the speaker would go into stand-by mode, that light would flicker and you could hear the relay flicker as well. This made a sound similar to a rattlesnake. The third speaker I received worked great for a few months, but now it has the same issue with the power on indicator light. It isnt near as bad or as frequent, so I decided to live with it and see what happens. I got tired of exchanging speakers. This subwoofer would be good for anyone looking to add some inexpensive earth shaking bass to their home entertainment experience, but theout of box quality of this speaker is what hurt the Performance rating that I gave this product.

The unit was DOA. I called up Onkyo customer service-- the waiting time was over 20 mins by the way-- and they confirmed that is was indeed DOA. From the reviews I read on Amazon, it seems quite a few people have this problem.

I just recently became interested in adding a subwoofer to my system. Checked out the online reviews, etc., and choose the SKW-204 as a good buy. Found the best deal at Vanns.

Just plugged it in, turned it on and loved the result. It auto powers on when needed. I never realized how much I was missing. I give it a 5 across the board based on its price. There are certainly better units available but at a much higher price.

This is my first sub-woofer. I never needed one before but I purchased used Onkyo Amp., speakers, and equalizer. The speakers produced very good mid-range sound but lacked the bottom end I was used to. The SKW-204s completed my system. Vanns service was great and the product shipped quickly. An idiot like me can connect this sub-woofer. It has plenty of adjustment volume and frequency cut-in.. I highly recommend this product with respect to quality, performance and Vanns service. Now for a pair Fostex FT17H tweeters.

All I can say is....WOW!! I didnt realize what I was missing. Simple hook up to my sub woofer out jack and 110 v power - the only word I can think of is AMAZING!!
Variable gain and volume makes dialing it in a simple task. I like the fact that theres a light to tell me when this speaker is in standby or active although theres no question about whether or not its working.
Vanns shipping and tracking was spot on, as always.
No complaints here.

I have to say that for the price this is a good solid subwoofer. Having said that I have to explain some of the minor issues I had to overcome to get it working and sounding the best it can. First of all there is only one way to hook it up and thats from the LFE line out from a 5.1, 7.1 or 7.2 receiver. This wasnt an issue for me, but if youre looking for a passive sub youll have to look elsewhere. Second, my old sub had a switch that would allow me to keep the sub turned on all the time or allow it to go into standby mode when it isnt receiving a signal. This doesnt have that feature. It will either be in auto standby mode or off. This was tricky for me at first because I have a Sony STR-DH710 receiver that allows me to hook up a mic and auto calibrate the sound settings for my listening environment. While this worked great for my old sub, the levels it set for the new sub were too low and the sub would go into standby mode and not become active again without turning the volume up extremely loud. After increasing the SW out on the receiver by 15 and lowering the output level on the sub I was able to get a good rich balanced sound. There are some local channels on Directv that dont produce enough lows to wake the sub but thats OK with me, the content normally doesnt require it. Im very impressed with the range of lows it will produce, many that my old sub didnt provide... and Blu-Ray movies have come to life much more with the deep thump I wanted. The movies that come to mind that really sound better are the Transformers movies and Twister. The reason Im only giving it a 4 on performance is that I still dont think it will compete with a $600 sub, but it is by far the best for the money. Ill be happy until my kids are out of college and I can afford to buy what I really want.

The price was very reasonable and the quality is good. The controllable volume allows me to keep too much base from shaking the house. Understanding which channels send a signal for the sub is the toughest task. Sometimes it displays red not active when I would expect the HD channel to provide it.

Vanns ship fast but forgot send me a tracking number after they sent out. Vanns price is the cheaper one under Google search, so I bought it. No trouble, no damage. Onkyo is one of the famous brand in Japan, I know Bose or JBL are more high class, but compare the price only $110 have 230W output, even Yamaha or Sony couldnt beat it. One thing is this amp is easy control, not like other products built up complicated but not useful. Powered Subwoofer is just a subwoofer, not a subwoofer amplifier.

I needed a compact subwoofer as my space is limited and the Onkyo SKW-204 was perfect. I was really pleased that I found a 10" sub that is compact in size, as most of the other brands with these compact dimensions were only 8. The 230W output is also much better than other subs in this price range. I am very satisfied with the sound output very clear and crisp. I this this is a great sub for the everyday consumer wanting to at a good amount low end to any system. The controls are simple. Its easy to connect. And it sounds great! Deep tight hard hitting boom. clean without a lot of distorting grumbling.
I bought a pair of these just to shake the walls and so far I am not disappointed.

To begin, I have sort of a conglomeration of a surround sound system. I have a few Panasonic speaker and a couple Samsung. What I was lacking, though, was a good sub to power up the low ends. After searching through the net, I finally came upon the ONKYO SKW-204. It seemed like the right fit for what I wanted. Good dimensions, good strength, and the ability to control frequency and gain. Most importantly, this subwoofer didnt break the bank. For the price, this sub definitely performs. I have a living room that is approximately 25 x 25 with 12 vaulted ceilings. This sub shakes it like nobodys business. I like to feel the action, and to test it I put in several movies with various scenes I knew could put it to the test. From thumping helicopters, to subtle bass lines in songs, this sub gets the job done.

This baby really rocks our home theater system! The crossover control and phase in vert switch allowed me to tune the bass output to the rest of the speakers which were pre-installed in the room. Its a very realistic bass and for the price cant be beat!

The Onkyo SKW 204 delivers maximum ouput for the price. If you are looking for a low to medium price range subwoofer, go no farther. I have this hooked up to my onkyo txsr607 receiver. Whether watching movies or listening to music, this subwoofer delivers. Very Happy with my purchase from Vanns. Their customer service is great and shipping time was only a few days. Thanks!

first i would like to thank vanns for the fast shipping
and great price
we were moving and dropped our sub-woofer
i tried to repair it but it had internal damage
went shopping and found this great company with really good prices
i own a onkyo amp and love it. it is ten years old and still kicks ass! this sub is a perfect fit and the sound is deep and clean

The Onkyo subwoofer blows my Yamaha and Sony subwoofers away. I have the subwoofer connected to an Onkyo tx-nr 807. It sounds great. The service at Vanns was excellent. I strongly recommend this speaker.

After putting off buying the Onkyo subwoofer to accompany to go with our mini shelf system, we wonder why we waited. It completes the sound we were looking for, and it is turned down at the half or below. It is bigger than I pictured, but that is my own fault for not looking at its dimensions. Overall, very pleased.

I owned DVD system with a surround sound set of speakers. The subwoofer was a specialized proprietary unit. I replaced the DVD with a Blue Ray and need a good reasonable cost subwoofer. The delivery was great and very carefully packaged. The Onkyo subwoofer looks great and sounds awesome. The installation was fast and easy. I have it connected to a Yamaha receiver. I recommend this model to anyone.

Extra rich lows and a good source of mid to low range sound. I bought this with 6 Mirage sattelite speakers and a Mirage center channel. I was able to fill in the missing low and mid to low end sound with this subwoofer. It takes a little tweaking but it is easy enough with the adjustable crossover. I bought this on sale at Vanns and when you couple the product with free shipping and 0 tax, you cannot beat the price anywhere.

I have an Onkyo 5.1 reciever, 301 Bose front speakers, and a nice center speaker to go along with it. I thought that woud be enough to enjoy movies and music, because my system is now complete, right? Nope, there was something still missing. I didnt have the THUMP, the super lows. LFEs. So I changed the setting on the reciever, kicked up the bass a bit, then a bit more, but that wasnt working, it just made it too bass-ey. I knew I needed a subwoofer. I looked around online like everybody else does. Vanns had the Onkyo powered subwoofer SKW-204, that matched up with my Onkyo receiver. Hooking it up, simple. I have both the volume and the LFEs at half throttle. Perfect audio enjoyment! Now my system IS complete, I even enjoy commercials if you can believe that.

I was drawn to the Onkyo brand because I have several older high-end Onkyo components that have given me years listening satisfaction. I was not disappointed with this Onkyo product either. I am using this subwoofer with a relatively cheap Sony surroundsound system. This subwoofer brought this system to life. I am very happy with the deep, rich bass for both music and movies. The price was very reasonable and Vanns service is second to none!
