I have heard a wide range of equipment in my time. The sales rep highly recommended the Energy VSW-10 since they messed up a previous order .and for the price I am giving it a try. Using decent headphones the fronts havent arrived yet vs. good cables through a decent Yamaha receiver I listen together and also AB switch to verify my reaction after 24 hours of break in. The unit has a disconcerting lag to the rest of the music even though they are tested from a common Y patch. This lag is slightly made better by setting the receiver setting for subwoofer room distance to its max of 80 feet ! and fronts at 1 ft min. Flipping the phase switch has no effect on the lag.The cone looks woven fiberglass probably and coated black, so the cone mass is probably not the issue. I dunno if it is amp or surround slowing it down. It sounds as muddy and rather boomy as a cheaper car sub unit. Lastly, the amp has yet to push it past 111 db even though many fronts can do 115 db and more. At 101 db at 1 meter a good low bass line from Africa by ToTo and You Belong To Me by Carly Simon the speaker sounded like it was bottoming. Bad juju.Turned the amp down. On the good side the amp never got more than a little warm, and the unit is a beautiful deep gloss black, and it does shake things at 111db at satisfyingly low hz if kinda muddy.. Now I know why they didnt continue, lesson learned about hype and inexpensive again.

This is the best powered subwoofer I have ever purchased. I replaced my 12 year old 8 Definitive Technology powered sub that is rated at 300W with this one. Although they are both rated at 300 watts of power the sound from the VSW10 seems to fill more space in the air and do so at more frequencies of bass waves. I believe it is louder than the Definitive Technology sub also. I enjoy the sound it makes so much that I ordered another one. It has a glossy finish which gets a lot of fingerprints on it so it may require a quick wipe down once in a while, and it looks great with or without the grill attachment. There are different standrardized hookups in the back, I use the mono RCA jack. There are also volume control which I never turn up all the way, some switches for turning it to automatically recognize bass signals and turn itself on when needed along with the onoff switch, and a zero and one hundred eighty degree toggle. I used to have to unplug my Definitive Technology sub from the electrical outlet when I didnt want it on.

I called vanns and ordered The VSW10 with 3 v5.2c and all came in separate boxes but all at the same time. The vsw10 is a lovely looking bass. The piano black bass has a nice gloss to them. For the build quality, its like a tank with two air ports in the back to push out that air. The bottom has rubber bottoms to stay put where you want it to stay at. The bass that come out this speaker is amazing. Its strong and accurate. I would recommend these speaker to anyone who loves Booming clear music and movies. Was shipped free with no sales tax, Vanns have out done themselfs again.

First of all, the pricing on this sub is phenomenal!! The same sub at the major electronics chain here in Canada sells for three times the price at Vanns.
Pricing aside, the clarity of the bass and tight response are right up there. I was extatic to find the whole Energy line on special as ive been a huge fan for YEARS but didnt have the money to step into that league.
The build quality is amazing as with all Energy products and the piano black finish and black, almost gunmetal finish of the Kevlar weave cone makes it an instant showpiece. I have it paired up with some Energy RC-70s, an Energy RC-LCR, and some older Acoustic Research surrounds and I really cant find any flaws. Powering this system is a Pioneer VSX-1326-K, which is the Canadian identical version of the Pioneer VSX-53 Elite. Bi-amped for the RC-70s. While the sub really isnt absolutely necessary for these towers, it is nice to add that extra kick!
Ive heard people say that its better to go with a brand that Ionly specializes in building subs, like Velodyne, for example, but getting a 1500 watt 15 sub is literally complete overkill for most applications. Might as well go with something that sounds great, has ample power and matches the rest of your system... At a FRACTION of comparable retail cost. I actually picked this one up as an open box special and it looks and works like its never been touched.
Good job Vanns!
Our room is approximately 16x20.
Altogether this system was a step up from a complete Mission 700 series 5.1 system that I bought 7 years ago, and while that was a great budget system, there is no better speaker set available that can match Energy for the prices that Vanns offers them for. Discontinued product line or not, buy them while you can.. You wont regret it.

I was going to order the energy Take Classic 5.1 system. but then read in some reviews elsewhere that this subwoofer is better than the one that comes in energy 5.1 combo. so I just bought the classic 5 speakers and this subwoofer.... A very good decision. It sounds way much better than the 8 SW that comes with the 5.1 system. it is perfect for my midsized apartment. The bass is not too overwhelming nor too soft... it is Value for money. the only thing is it Does Consume lot of space!!!... i am giving it 4 stars because I compared the energy 5.1 combo and my setup in different rooms though both rooms are the same size just to be fair with the SW that comes with the 5.1 combo.

Well, I thought this was a dog at first. This replaced my Klipsch SW-450 in my entertainment home theater room. After turning it on and playing some music, I noticed the 30-40hz range was extremely lacking. I got frustrated and examined the enclosure to realize the two ports had come out of the outer sleeves and were laying in the bottom of the cabinet. I had to remove the amp to reattach the ports and used silicone to glue them in place. In all fairness, the woofer could have suffered an impact in shipment. There was no cosmetic damage, though. After re-assembly and trying the music again, wow! I heard notes in my music BELOW the normal base notes that I was used to hearing! The transient response and overall sound quality seems very high to me. The finish and quality of materials is way up there. The value from Vanns pricing is pretty amazing on this one. This is the nicest sub I have ever owned.

Couldnt wait to hook-up my VSW 10 to my current Home Theater setup. I was adding a second subwoofer and the Energy was to be used from 100htz down to 50Htz and then I would have my Paradigm PS 1000 kick in for that added rumble of bass.
Once I got the Energy setup, I flipped the switch to Auto and waited for my system to truly come alive. Nothing. No lights, no rumble. Silence from the Sub. I flipped the switch to ON. Still nothing. Wiggled the power cord....and I get a DEEP BUMP and then a Loud PoP. Then I got the bass sounds I was expecting. Ran the system for about 3 hours the first day and no problems. Next day I turn on the receiver, and notice the Energy Sub is not on. I was watching a Dolby Digital Program...so I should have gotten something from the bass channel. Flipped the switches to On, Auto, Off. Nothing. Wiggled the power cord....same thing Deep Bump and then a POP. Watched TV for about 3-4 hours. Noticed as I was turning off the system the Energy Sub had cut off sometime during this viewing. No green Light, No deep bass. Went to Best Buy to buy a new subwoofer cable. Thought that might help!
Next day turned the system on and No Problems. Watched THor and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Got some good bass during both movies. Or so I thought. Noticed that when I got up to power off my system. The Energy Sub had turned itself off no green light. This was the last straw. Called Vanns for an RMA number and UPS label for a Return. Waiting for my credit card to be Credited.
Still shopping for a 2nd Sub!

I recently purchased an Energy V-SW10 to supplement a 5,1 array of Mirage OMD-5s I use primarly for Super Audio CD listening, powered by my vererable Sony DA5ES. This speaker array is replacing a previous 5.1 array of Mirage Omnisats supplemented with a Polk PSW404 I am now using as a HT array for an Epson 3010 projector. Given the considerable outlay for my new theatre, I was motivated by cost in my choice of the Energy V-SW10. Given the choice, I would have preferred to purchase a Mirage Prestige S10. but Vanns no longer carries it, and I couldnt find it elsewhere except Mirages site at full MSRP. After doing considerable research, however, it seems there is precious little difference between this Energy model and the Mirage. It seems both companies are now owned by Klipsch, and close visual inspection, along with analysis if promotional copy reveals that the two models in question share many identical parts, not the least of which, the actual driver, featuring the proprietary Ribbed Elliptical Surround. Additionally, the two feature exactly the same performance specifications and the proprietary BASH amplification. I mention all of this because I havent been particularly impressed with Energys reputation in the past. Apparently Energys Veritas is their flagship line and borrows heavily from sister company Mirages technology. Were it not for what I consider Mirages classier spike feet, the units are nearly indistinguishable. With this background out of the way, let me say that I am extremely happy with my choice of the V-SW10. Having an Infinity SS-10 and the Polk PSW404 for comparison, I can say that the Energy easily bests them both. In terms of sheer volume of air moved there is no comparison. In terms of musicality, the Energy plays 10-20 Hz lower than my references. Although this is considerably more important in a HT installation, I easily notice the bass extension in music as well. My preference for electric blues brings out this strength in everyday listening. Unfortunately, I allow asthetic constraints to influence placement options, but the variety of controls has enabled me to get satisfactory performance while placing the unit in an inconspicuous location. It blends rather seamlessly with the OMD5s, aided by the satellites relatively low 60 Hz lower threshold. This greatly helps in preventing one from pinpointing the location of the sub-woofer as lower frequencies are theoretically less easily localized. From a build quality perspective, this is about as attractive and sturdily built as a black box can be. The piano black lacquer is flawless. My only beef would be the feet, which are heavy, but pedestrian injection-molded plastic. Again, the Mirage version has classier looking spikes with matching pads for use on wood floors. Bottom line You cant go wrong with the V-SW10, especially given Vanns current pricing. Additionally, Energys Veritas line shines in comparison to their other product lines. Another note. This has been my first experience with Vanns and I couldnt be more pleased. The sales representative was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Shipping was prompt and the items carefully packaged. I look forward to dealing with Vanns again in the future.

Excellent sub for Music and Movies!!
Pros Very Clean, Deep, powerful bass for music and movies. Performs much better than more expensive units. Looks great and blended well with my def-tech speakers and Yamaha RX-V663.
Cons Nothing major. Definitely needs time to break in. Seemed underpowered until it ran for a while 10 hours and I got the placement in the room perfect. Some distortion at very high volumes but really no different than other brands.
I listened at my local retailers to a lot of other high end subs such as def-tech, martin logan, B&W, Polk, velodyne and klipsch. I brought the same music and movies with me to each listening session and quickly found out that most subs could perform reasonably well for movies but would fail horribly when listening to music. I liked the sound of the Energy ESW-C10 the best by far. Only complaint about the ESW-C10 was that it seemed a little under powered and started distorting around 12 to 34 volume . I decided to try the VSW10 since it was much more powerful and currently is considered Energys top of the line.
Placement of the sub in the room was critical and it took longer that I expected to find the right place. I have the sub facing the seating area about 20 inches away from the wall and away from all corners. I ran the receiver cal without any issues. Last sub was in the corner but this one over powered the room even at low volumes.
I listened to a bunch of different music and at different volumes and loved the way it sounded. Very clean and accurate without any boomy noise or distortion. At extremely high volumes there is some distortion so I will not run the volume on the sub higher than 34. I am guessing this may get better as the sub breaks in some more. Certainly nothing different than I heard on other subs.
For movies I was equally impressed. I did notice that you tend to feel it more than you hear it because it is so clean. It is easily able to fill the room and shake the couch from 15 feet away.
