Integrating a subwoofer into your home theater system is a great way to add a new dimension to your audio tracks for a more immersive experience. But the hassle and eyesore of running a cable across the room can be a huge bother. But with the PSWi225 from Polk, that's not a problem anymore. This impressive subwoofer uses a 2.4GHz wireless transmitter to remove the need to run valuable speaker cable across the room. Simply plug in the subwoofer's power cord and connect the wireless transmitter to your sound source and you're ready to go. The transmitter even uses Polk Digital Logic to detect whether you're using an LFE or Line Level connection, and then sends the correct data to your sub. Without a signal wire, your placement options aren't limited by the length of your cable, so you can place it anywhere in the room, even underneath furniture! And, for people who prefer a more old-school approach to home audio, the PSWi225 features cable connections on the back of the subwoofer in addition to its wireless ability.

The other half

Being wireless allows you to place your new subwoofer without worrying about the length of your cable. But that's only half the equation for convenient placement. At only 12.5" W x 13.0" H x 12.5" D, the PSWi225 takes up little more than a cubic foot of space, so this compact sub really can be placed almost anywhere.

Let's talk numbers

At such a small size, you might expect the sound of this subwoofer to pale in comparison to larger models. However, this is not the case at all. The PSWi225 puts out some pretty impressive numbers. It has a dynamic power rating of 200W. The continuous power rating is a solid 100W. The frequency response range is 34Hz on the low end to 250Hz on the upper end to faithfully reproduce the entire bass track from your favorite shows and music. The crossover frequency, where the subwoofer takes over from your other speakers can be set anywhere from 40Hz to 180Hz. These stats give the small-statured PSWi225 all the punch it needs to compete with bigger bass boxes.

Low and Loud

Perhaps the most impressive numbers the PSWi225 has to show are its CEA 2010 ratings. The CEA 2010, or Low and Loud ratings essentially put a value on how loud a subwoofer can play at low frequencies, and at ultra-low frequencies without getting distorted significantly. This number allows people to compare a subwoofers performance in terms more relative to actually listening than inches and Watts. In its tests, the PSWi225 scored an eardrum-threatening 110.2 dB rating in the low category (40-63Hz). In the ultra-low area (20-31.5Hz) it pulled off a core-shaking 88.0 dB. Not only can it hit the low notes, it can hit them hard.

It's all in the design

At this point you may find yourself wondering how an 8", 100W subwoofer could actually pull off ratings on the same level as models inches bigger with hundreds more Watts. It's gotta be a misprint, or maybe that's just the manufacturer padding their numbers to sound better, right? Actually, no. Watts and inches are both factors in the output of a speaker, but far from the only things that count. Just like with higher-frequency speakers, efficiency plays a huge part in the intensity, range, and accuracy of sound. Fortunately, Polk didn't mess around with the design of the PSWi225. Let's start with the cabinet design. It's made of a heavy-duty, non-resonant MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) and has internal braces to maintain its exact shape over time. The PSWi225 also makes use of a flared J-port design for optimal acoustics without taking up extra space. The woofer itself was optimized through testing on a state-of-the-art Klippel Distortion Analyzer to get the ideal motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension. Polk's engineers also used laser interferometry to perfect the speaker's design. They consider every detail carefully, right down to the materials they use. This attention to details is what allows such an unimposing subwoofer to hit you like a much larger model.

This powered sub woofer has great sound for the money. It is wireless which gives it flexibility for placement. The only problem we had was the speaker would malfunction every time we used our microwave oven. There was no correcting the problem so we had to return the speaker. This sub woofer would work well if its not close to a kitchen or appliances.

I purchased the subwoofer since I did not have a method to hide a physical wire. After I figured out which port to use on my Yamaha receiver, the unit was a charm. Like the compliment to my Polk speaker system.

Vanns price was excellent and they shipped the sub very quickly. It took longer to get the sub out of the box than it did to set it up. Due to space constraints, the sub needed to be placed on the opposite side of the room from the rest of the the electronics but there was no way to run a sub cable. The wireless function is wonderful. Just plug your cable into the small unit and you can place the sub anywhere. It is not the most powerful sub Ive ever heard but the wireless functionality easily makes up for it.

I purchased this sub-woofer a couple of months ago and could not be more pleased. Even though it is a relatively new product, the professional review that Vanns posted on their website, plus Polk quality, convinced me to give it a try. I have a 5.1 system with a Yamaha receiver and Boston speakers. The sound is spectacular. Very musical and enjoyable to listen to. Im a bass guitarist and know what good live bass should sound like. The bass from this speaker is very accurate, tight and clean. For movies this little giant can shake the house! I did not believe that so much great sound could come from such s small sub-woofer, even at low volume! The wireless feature is flawless. Ive hidden this sub in a corner in the back of the theater area out of sight. The materials and quality of construction are top notch. In summary WOW!

Ive had this subwoofer for about 6-8 months. It has now started to hum off and on after being on for an hour. The humming then proceeded to get quite loud. I tried unconnecting and reconnecting but that did not correct the problem. I have to grab the receiver and shake it to get the humming to stop. Im currently looking into what else could be done to correct this.
