Big Bass Is A Good Thing
When it comes to subwoofers, there's no reason to mess around: bigger is definitely better. But, with this subwoofer, bigger no longer means size, it only refers to power. As part of the Small Plays Loud (SPL) series, this amazingly compact amp is designed to save you space, while maximizing bass potential.
Let Sound Fill Your Space, Not The Subwoofer
This SPL II subwoofer is one of the big brothers in Velodyne's Small Plays Loud series. Even though this bad boy isn't actually "bigger" in size, it does pack a big punch and will really knock your socks off with its incredible sound. This woofer delivers gigantic bass that won't overpower the sound, or take the room over either as it occupies less than one cubic foot. In addition to being so small, it has a nicely polished finish that is quite elegant and flattering. Despite its musical weight, this woofer is very sleek and will cosmetically compliment, instead of contradict, the inconspicuous design of your modern flat TV and other audio equipment. It also easily builds into a cabinet for an even more seamless fit with your room's d?cor while still delivering all that dynamic bass. Some improvements on this design include a thin front cover and instead of plastic pressure pins, it has the more durable metal pins for attachment. The blue power LED light on the front is quite intoxicating and adds to the impressive modern manner of this subwoofer. Overall, this subwoofer just looks really good.
Monstrous Little Woofer
Don't less this bad boy's nice appearance deceive you, however. This little monster still has a big bite. It's a musical sounding subwoofer that isn't limited in tone and blends well with your reference speakers. It gives sound to those extra harmonics that are inherently eliminated by a servo-controlled driver. It also provides great quality to low frequency content and won't leave you with a 'thump" or limited definition, even below 80 Hz. The bass of this subwoofer is crisp, accurate, and deep. It's perfect for casual musical listening, but, as part of the SPL series, it also does justice to movies. It will have you totally immersed in the feeling and sound of heavy impacts and blast explosions from your home theater. Lots of subwoofers that are this small in size really can't equally serve both movies and music; this one can. It can shake the room with sound effects, extend the lowest organ bass pedal notes, provide detail and definition of rich string jazz, AND give you good beats to your hard driving music. And, the inside mechanics of this subwoofer are just as impressive as what it delivers. It is built like a brick. It has a super still, multi-layer Kevlar-reinforced Resin Cone. Yes, Kevlar. Its driver is so absolutely stiff that you'll be able to see why it takes 1000 watts RMS to drive this thing home! It has excellent corner bracing and thick EPDM rubber surround padding to make it as inert as possible. This subwoofer is very tight and lacks audible resonance. It is going to rock your world.
Class "D" For Dandy
Velodyne has given this amp an upgrade. It has 33-40% more power, bringing it to 2000 watts (Dynamic) to provide Class D Digital amplification. The patented Energy Recovery System (ERS) of this digital amplifier makes it 95% efficient, with only 5% of the remaining power generating heat. In order to be titled Class D an amp must be highly efficient, with at least 90% of the delivered power being transferred to the load and no more than 10% being transformed into heat. For comparison, Class A/B amplifiers rarely achieve efficiency ratings beyond 60%. This amp incorporates Velodyne's exclusive Dynamic Driver Control System (DDSC), which uses impedance feedback rather than the solid state servo, to keep distortion low. It retains a large, powerful amplifier and large 8", forward firing excursion driver that is designed with low distortion in mind (<5%) and can give you sufficient bass for the home theater experience you want. DDCS assures the tight, accurate, musical bass for which Velodyne is famous. This active signal-based system incorporates technology that assures linear cone movement, and controls the driver's frequency and distortion characteristics, without overdriving. When driven hard, other amplifiers clip the output, distort the signal to the subwoofer, and don't drive the cone to full excursion, or the distance a driver travels to create an audio frequency. The extra strength of the driver is basically wasted. This results in a subwoofer that is pushed beyond its limits and won't play up to its potential. And, what output the unit DOES have is distorted or otherwise sub-par. The weakest link of the chain brings the quality of the whole system down to that level. However, because this amp's technology is customized for digital precision it is possible to achieve the maximum allowable performance from both the amplifier and woofer motor structure without overdriving either one. This means you get deeper bass extension, bigger impact, and cleaner sound. Utilizing this exclusive technology, the SPL II subwoofer reproduces music and home theater with 1/6th of the audible distortion found in competitive products. You don't have to sacrifice output or dynamics for precise music and special effects. Class D sounds good, right, but, what's the catch? Well, the added efficiency of Class D amplifiers does come at a price; the linearity is slightly compromised and the distortion is minimally increased. Fortunately, this isn't really perceivable in low frequency applications and thus, the added efficiency and size reduction of these subwoofers make it a REALLY good trade off. Now, not only is this subwoofer extremely reliable and won't cut out, but it's also more flexible in placement possibilities.
Flexible Crossover With Subwoofer Direct
This powered subwoofer will seamlessly integrate with the rest of your audio system because it has a full array of gold-plated RCA inputs, plus setting options that make it work with any subwoofer output that you need to use. The amplifier panel has both line-level input jacks for connecting to the subwoofer output jack on the receiver, and speaker level input connectors for connecting to the speaker output posts. This Velodyne subwoofer is designed to operate using the full range audio signal for input when using the built-in crossover. Low pass crossover sums the left and right channel inputs together, with the resulting signal passing thorough adjustable low-pass crossover before being amplified. The crossover control allows you to adjust the upper limit of the subwoofer's frequency response from 40 to 120Hz so you can achieve a smooth and seamless transition from the subwoofer to the main speakers in your system. It will match ideally with any main speaker (larger and smaller speakers alike) and the acoustics of a room. It divides the incoming electrical signals into the appropriate frequency ranges with the bass going to the subwoofer and everything else going to the other speakers. The low-pass adjustment of 40Hz lets you reproduce the lower frequencies, while setting it to 120 Hz will limit it to 120 Hz and below. There's no hard and fast rule about which frequencies are best, and part of the fun of owning hi-fi stereo equipment is experimenting to find your own unique audio taste. There's also the exclusive Subwoofer Direct feature that lets the subwoofer receive and play unaltered output of the Low Frequency Effect (that ".1" channel) of a receiver or processor. Because it doesn't pass the signal through a second crossover, there is no loss of impact or accuracy that can often be created in competitive models. Subwoofer Direct allows highest levels of performance and full compatibility with all digital surround processors, for today and tomorrow. There's also an easy phase control function that allows you to reverse the phase of the subwoofer's output signal 180 degrees to correct any possible mismatching that cancels sound between the subwoofer and main speakers.
Get The WOW Factor
This classy subwoofer is able to accurately reproduce the wide frequency response of 28 to 120 Hz. In addition, you get a custom-designed Extended Excursion Slot-loaded Bass Reflex driver that is engineered with Kevlar and mounted in a die-cast aluminum basket to increase power handling and assure long-term reliability. Large, dual-layer 2.5" inner/outer wound voice coils are specifically matched with a massive 12.7 lb. magnet to provide that dynamic bass you can feel right down to your bones! This also assures linear travel and allows for the heat dissipation needed to handle the enormous amount of power delivered by the ERS amp. The sensitive, 8" front-firing bass-reflect design of this speaker minimizes the distortion created in port cabinets, while maximizing bass impact. The front-forward energy also makes it great for custom installation so you can make it work with your system however you want. This woofer is designed with incredible excursion ability that many rival 10" and 12" lesser-designed subwoofers could only dream about. It is among the best out there.
