If you could only shop at one bookstore the rest of your life . . .
Electronic readers are becoming popular, but it pays to be selective when it comes to sourcing options for downloadable reading material. Readers that source book titles from one place leave few options &mdash especially when copyright infringements prevent downloading certain titles or preclude keeping a title you already downloaded. By supporting both industry standard formats &mdash ePub and PDF &mdash you can access books at ebookstore.sony.com, check out books from public libraries, access over one million free public domain titles from Google Books, and cull good reads from sharing sites, online aggregators and personal publishers. Additionally your Reader Pocket Edition supports Adobe PDF5, Microsoft Word, BBeB Book and other text file formats, as well as ePub / ACS4 and connection with Adobe Digital Editions 4.
Your home bookshelf can't even hold 350 titles
Your vacation to the tropics means you'll have nothing but time on your hands to catch up on all of the books you've been promising to read these last two years. Worried your Pocket Edition won't go the distance with battery? Try 7,500 quick page turns that allow you to read at a natural pace &mdash in a single charge. With 512MB of onboard memory, you'll carry 350 of your all-time favorite books with you at any given time, so you can easily skip between reads or refer to favorite literary passages. When you tell your husband you're going on that "all-girls trip," he'll never suspect that your favorite girls "Anna Karenina," "Jane Eyre," "Emma" and "Anne of Green Gables" are literary giants. On-the-go reading was never this much fun.
Paper-like display for easy-on-the-eyes readability
The Sony PRS300 pocket reader features a large 5" screen with "E Ink" Vizplex technology to make reading from your Pocket Edition digital reader more like reading the page of a book than you might imagine. A high-contrast ratio means this paper-like display delivers amazing book print quality you can read in direct sunlight, or in low lights, without eye strain. Adjustable font sizes on the PRS300 means your Reader Pocket Edition offers you the ability to re-size text. Choose from three adjustable font sizes to improve readability. Lightweight design means you can slip your digital pocket reader into your purse, or jacket pocket, and carry it just about anywhere. Easy side-button navigation on either side means turning pages quickly with left or right hands.
Library management on your own terms
Compatible with PC or Mac, intuitive eBook Library 3.0 software makes it easy to download eBooks, manage your collection and transfer titles to your Read Pocket Edition. A simple USB 2.0 cable transfers eBooks and charges your reader. Your own internet connection means you won't ever be limited in sourcing reading material, and you choose which companies get your business.

My husband and I are downsizing from a large home to a condo. We look forward to less stuff and maintenance concerns. I wasnt ready to let go of my library, but realized most of it can be replaced with eBooks! I received my eBook Reader a few weeks ago and have begun replacing my library. I just love the size and ease of reading on the Pocket eBook Reader. Its just like reading a paperback novel, but lighter and easier to carry in my purse. Now we dont have to pack, move and store my little library...I can store my books on my eBook, or my hard drive. So very easy and convenient!

I also have a Kindle, but I use this Sony most of the time now. It does use some different formats than the Kindle. Along with the Calibre free ebook application, this is a fantastic reader. Top quality! I wish it came with a charger optional, but top quality, will charge well on a computer via mini-usb. The charger has a different connection.
Book organization is OUTSTANDING, and far superior to Kindle.
Battery life is great, usability is great, quality is great.
I am a hardware geek and the build and features of this little reader are top notch.
There are plenty of souces for ebooks online. But good ones are not free!
I dont use the built in PC software.
Getting the Adobe encrypted books on the Sony requires a free Adobe bookreader application.
There are a lot of free old books on the net, and for the reasonable price of this unit, you get thousands of titles!
This model does not have wireless cellphone data 3g connection, or wifi capability.. Load from PC only. You can get books from the Sony Store with software built into the reader, which can install on your PC. But these wireless features on other units mean you can only BUY books in the format of the sellers.
Love it!

This is a wonderful little book. We have been looking at getting an ebook reader for some time and wasnt sure if it was the right move for my wife and I. We each only read a book or two a month and we werent sure we were going to get our value. We also were unsure about how well the book would look on the screen and found it difficult to find working samples in the store. I researched many other eReaders and thought I was going to get the Kindle when I started. For me, it came down to usable features. The Kindle is great for the 3G features to download anywhere you want and reading news papers, but realistically, I wouldnt use much of either feature. The Sony eReader allows you to download from multiple formats with the biggest seller being that you can download books from the library for free. There are hundreds of libraries in my area that do this unfortunately, my library hasnt hit it yet, but Im in a smaller town.
I must admit that we were pleasantly surprised with how easy it is to operate and the space it saves. One feature we didnt expect is how light it is. My wife loves putting it in her purse when she goes to work. She couldnt always do this with other books. It is so nice to hold the book without getting our fingers cramped holding the pages back. It is also very easy to read. Many times you find yourself reaching to turn the page because it looks so real. The only time we had a difficult time with it is when it gets dark, but hey, who can read a regular book in the dark?
The user interface on the computer was a piece of cake also. Just plug it into the computer and follow the instructions! It was also very easy to search books and add them to the reader. It works very similarly to an iPod. It did take a few minutes to realize that after you download a book it doesnt go to the reader automatically, but you just need to drag and drop it to your reader.
You can list your books alphabetically by title or Author, which is helpful. When you read a book, it remembers where you left off so that you can continue later. You can also bookmark any page you want for future reference which was also a nice touch. My only real complaint is that it is a bit slow. When you pick an item or turn a page it takes a second to respond, but you get used to this easily.

Before I got my book reader, Id borrowed a book from the library. Im currently reading that book and find it not as enjoyable to read a bulky real book as it is using the book reader.

I purchased this digital reader after doing research on various digital readers. I like the size of the screen and the portability of the reader. I can stick it in my purse and read anytime I have some downtime without lugging around a thick, bulky book. The print is easy on the eyes and you have 3 different sizes to choose from. I am going to be doing some traveling this summer and am looking forward to having my book in my purse for easy access. I purchased the rose color and before I got it I was concerned that it might be too bright, but its just right. You can bookmark the page you left off reading, however, when you start reading again it always picks up from where you left off even if you dont use the bookmark feature. The only things I see that could be improved on is the page turning could be faster and a backlight added for nighttime viewing. Overall I am very happy with my digital reader and would highly recommend it to everyone.

Sure, this reader doesnt have 3G, cant play Mp3s and cant connect to an online store and get a book in 60 seconds, but those are the advantages! With the Sony Reader you arent shackled to any online store ie, Amazon or iTunes. This means I can download books from anywhere, ePubs, lrfs, pdfs...and many other formats are supported by this reader, and well to. I have to say that the Sony Readers renders everything I throw at it better than any other reader on the market. So if youre big on obtaining your own book collection this ereader, along with the Calibre software will put you in ebook heaven.

I weighed the Sony Reader at 7.5 ounces, which is 3 ounces less than the Kindle and far lighter than the Nook as well. This means its portable, small enough to hold in one hand without fatigue and feels like a real book when you purchase the Sony leather cover for it.
You cant go wrong with this reader for $169. Vanns delivered it in 2 days and their customer service is amazing as well.
Go for it, buy the Sony Reader. We purchased 2, one in blue and one in pink. Youll love these things!

Bought this PRS-300 for my wife as a birthday gift, having purchased one for myself several months ago. Received the PRS-300 as promised, and it worked perfectly as promised! She had it loaded up with about 15 books from the Sony E-reader store the afternoon she received it, and we took off on vacation. She loves it.
The PRS-300 is the most compact E-reader available just about the size of a paperback but much thinner. The screen is great, with excellent contrast and no problems with glare. I can typically 2-3 books before I have to even think about recharging the battery.
If youre looking for a pocket size reader that competently provides the basic function of a book without a lot of extra bells and whistles, this is the one to buy.

My wife loves the Sony Digital Reader Pocket Edition [PRS300RC] that I recently got for her. She had been using an old Palm TX of mine that she loaded up with books from the local library. At first I explored getting her a smartphone that included ebook reader software, such as my own iPhone. My wife didnt want something complicated she just wanted to be able to make a call or read a book. At first I struggled to find a device to do both, but then started exploring the possibility of getting her a dedicated ebook reader.
My research narrowed down to three devices
Amazon Kindle 2
Cool-er ebook Reader
Sony Reader Pocket Edition
Although the Kindle was compelling, I opted to go with the less expensive Sony product. The things that brought the Sony Reader to the forefront were [1] its small size, for portability, [2] its Epub capability, for Library loaners, and [3] the sexy pink color [my wife still grins at it]. Other pluses were the extensive Google Books library [over 1 million] and the surprisingly well done Sony eBook Library.
Of course after its arrival, I had to thoroughly test out the new digital reader - being in IT for many decades, I just love that part of the job. After charging and getting familiar with the fairly simple and straightforward menu system, I began the process of downloading an ebook. Nothing could have been simpler. Within just a few moments I had a starter set of free ebooks I though my wife would enjoy and presented the new Sony ebook reader to her as a surprise. She was leery at first, as she is with all technical devices, but soon started smiling as I showed how easy it was to operate and to download books - now she cant put it down. She used to gripe at me when I had my nose stuck in an interesting ebook, now its my turn - Uh, honey when are we having dinner?
Yes, there are certain limitations on this ebook reader, the most prominent [for my wife] is the lack of a backlight for reading in bed. Also, its not as feature-laden as other more expensive alternatives, but again for my wife that was a plus - she didnt want complicated - she just wanted to read.
Ultimately my wife wanted something easy to carry, easy to operate, and fun to read. The Sony Digital Reader Pocket Edition was the perfect solution. So far she couldnt be happier.
Well done Sony...dj

Overall, Ive been very happy with this compact little e-reader. Three things that could have been either clearer in the literature or actually present in the literature 1 How to turn it off, 2 How to down load books, and 3 How to take the marked page off.
If those three things are the worst things to wrestle with, then I really have nothing to complain about! Its very user friendly and intuitive except for the previously mentioned issues.
Anyone who wishes to try an e-reader, I suggest this model, having looked and physically held and tried to operate some of the others. I only wanted to use my e-reader as just a reader. I dont need more bells and whistles to distract my reading experience.
I cant recommend this highly enough. Ive enjoyed it, and use it daily with no problems.

Almost a year ago, I started collecting books in PDF format, and have been reading them off a computer screen, which is not very convenient except at work, during a slow day! . My friend mentioned the idea of a digital book reader, and after reading lots of reviews and doing some online research, I opted for the Sony Pocket Reader, and I havent regretted it since. Its incredibly simple--quick to figure out, fast and easy to load. It is fully charged in less than 3 hours, and holds the charge very well---my battery indicator just finally went from a full 4 notches down to 3...and that was after over a week of heavy reading. A review I read on Amazon claimed it doesnt format PDFs very well, which made me wary, but I feel they work just fine. The page numbers are not exact because you just have to flip about 5 small pages on the reader to equal one large page of PDF so you can be on page 10 for a couple flips, but I dont have any issue with that. I wish the pages could flip a little faster, and without the flash at each page, but I understand that is due to e-ink technology, and not specific to Sony. The biggest problem that I have is that its just fueled my reading-addictiong...Ive got 70 books on my reader, and I want to read them all, right away! Looks like Ill have to take up speed-reading....
Overall, I absolutely love my Sony reader, and would happily recommend it to anyone considering purchasing a reader.

Big Pros for the Sony
1. It is small and fits in a top or side pocketbiggest pro
2. It can get books from our public library
3. Battery life is longer than Kindle
4. It comes on almost instantly instead of loading like a computer
Cons
It requires a computer to sync
Not as many books as on Amazon but still a lot of books

I am very happy with my Sony E-reader PRS300BC. It is so compact and easy to use easy to read. Only issue I have is you cant download a PDF & EPUB from the library at the same time to your reader, one format will show as page protected...seems like it could be an easy software fix for Sony but....they dont seem to be moving on it too fast - I have contacted them. Other than that, I love it!!!!!! So much easier than carrying a book around. One of the best purchases Ive ever made!

I have had this now for a bit over 2 weeks and I just love it! My husband has the Barnes and Noble Nook and he actually likes mine better. It is light and thin. It fits in my purse perfectly and the sleeve it comes with keeps the screen clean and unscratched. There really isnt a need to buy a new cover. This reader is very easy to use and the e-ink really makes it seem like you are reading a real book.

Background im buying 4 ebooks to keep my family in reading material over a long trip abroad.
The Pocket reader is quite cool. Surprisingly small - i can put it in my front jeans pocket. Screen is fine - comparable to its Amazonian competitor. Controls are intuitive enough. The page-flash on changing pages is disconcerting at first but then so was turning pages on books at one point. Bring back scrolls, yeah!
The Reader software is lacklustre at best Calibre is a considerable improvement for managing non-DRM content.
The claims about gazillions of books are a bit weak - yeah, lots of public domain texts but Id say on balance that theres less current material available. Moreover, you really need to go to multiple ebook sites to pull a good current library together.
I ordered 2 more of them, but my spouse wants a K-word instead. So, final score Sony - 3 other guys - 1.
The thing that tipped the balance - which is important to consider - is the support for non-DRMd content e.g. EPUB. If I buy an ebook, i should be able to use it on future devices. The K-word reader doesnt allow for that the Sony does.

This a great reader very easy to use, supports a great number of formats, including epub, lrf, txt, doc, and pdf. Easy on the eyes, great one handed use, and super light weight. Overall awesome product. Even with the fixed memory it takes a lot to fill it up ant to go though that many books is almost unreasonable. You want to get this reader.

For a voracious reader, this is a real bargain, particularly if purchased from discount sellers. This is a rather simple device to operate and is very easy to manipulate and enjoy.
However and its a big however, Sonys elibrary is mediocre and somewhat clunky and the autoload function which can be disabled is very annoying. To fully enjoy the Sony, you must juggle between the Sony library, Adobe Digital Editions and Calibre. Personally, I only use Digital Editions and Calibre. I suspect that many of the returns of this item have to do with the unnerving software conflicts, not the device itself.
Nonetheless, the print is very clear and the fonts are easily adjustable. Downloading once the software conflicts are resolved is simple and deleting books is also a no brainer. Bookmarking works fine as well.
My favorite feature is the units capacity to download free books from the public library. This feature will allow me to pay for the device in three months or less. Public domain books are also readily available from Feedbooks and other sites and this access is allowing me to read classics I havent perused since college. The free periodicals from Calibre are also terrific. And you can always buy titles from several online booksellers.
If you are reasonably computer savvy and can get past Sonys lame attempts to get you to buy books exclusively from them, this is well worth your time and investment.
Highly recommended for those who simply like to read and want variety and portability. I liked it so much I gave three of these units to friends as gifts they love the reader.

I received my Sony Pocket reader from Vanns and was pleasantly surprised by the exceptional quality and style of the unit. I had been researching e-readers for over several months, not quite sure if it was going to be just another expensive toy, and might end up in a bottom drawer, never to be seen again that is until I saw the Sony Pocket e-reader, it is smaller than most other readers, 4 and a quarter inches wide x 6 and a quarter inches tall x less than one-half inch thick and weighs approx. 5 ounces and was just what I was looking for, an e-reader that would fit perfectly in any one of my shirt or jacket pockets. The reader has been in my shirt pockets daily, since the day I got it since Im an older guy I love the fact that I dont have to carry it in my hand or in some kind of a inconvenient tote. I can and have enjoyed reading at a moments notice - just reach in my pocket and not have to go looking for where I left it or that I forgot it at home. The screen clarity is top of the line, just like reading a paper novel, no glare and no eye strain also I can change the size of the font, instantly, for my reading comfort. Everyone that enjoys reading novels and short stories could benefit by owning a handy Sony pocket e-reader even if they own one of the larger more expensive readers that are on the market - the Sony e-reader, because of its design, size and weight is truly portable.
The e-reader is simple and quick to set up, and very simple to operate, the installed rechargeable battery lasts me approximately 2 to 3 weeks and charges by plugging it into my PCs USB slot no need for an additional adapter, very, very convenient.
Sonys software is top of the line, installs fast and had me up and reading quickly. The Sony software allows for downloading EPUB format books, and also quite a few other formats, which gives me the opportunity to utilize my towns library, without having to go there and best of all is that there are many sites offering free downloads of novels both current and classics. Within 2 days I had installed 325 novels on my reader, of which only 2 are classics all of them for FREE! The Sony e-reader comes with a soft case for storage, when not in my pocket, keeps the dust off. There is no need to buy anything additional for the reader as it is self-contained and as the name implies, it should be kept in your pocket so that you are able to do what it was designed for and that is, to READ books and ENJOY!!!
As an added note I do use a free program Calibre just google search it to manage my new library, others online had recommended it and I also did install a camera wrist strap there is a special place for it on the Sony reader, I did this as a safety precaution so I dont drop my reader when Im using it and also the strap does not interfere with it going in my pocket. Sony truly, in my mind, has a winner with this e-reader product and Vanns lower pricing of the product made my purchase a no brainer, its priced right and with the immediate download of 325 FREE novels which I am enjoying immensely, and thousands more available, once I finish these, for FREE, there is no reason or excuse on earth why someone should not own a Sony Pocket e-reader.

The reason one buy these eReader devices over a laptop or LCD-based device is because of the display technology its very much like paper and the batteries last very long as it does not need to be constantly refreshed. This particular model is pretty small - but not small enough to be carried in a pocket like iPod Touch or iPhone. You would still be carrying it in your bag. The 5 display is a bit too small. It works fine with native ePub files but if you are reading a PDF that is basically a scan of pages from a book most google books then it is just not readable - you have to zoom and then have to keep scrolling the page. All that would be fine if the device had snappier response but it is slow to refresh pages - either to scroll same page or to turn page. For a native format document that is mainly text, it took a more reasonable 1 second to refresh. But once you move onto a scanned text document or images - this time increases to 5 seconds! Since the display can be refreshed in about a second, it must be the slow processor that is taking this long to render an image. If you can find a model with a faster processor, that would be much more useful. I think the touch screen model has a faster processor.

Ive not yet tried the other readers but the reason I love this one is because it is simple enough to where I can give it to my mother and shed not have issues using it.
It has exactly what id ask for an ereader. Of course, one supposed to be used to read books. The display is too small for magazines.
Pros
Its simple and it works. Some people compain theres no wireless card. Why would you want that? You connect once, you load several books, and youre done for a long while. And without it the battery life is very long. Really long.
The fact that there is no backlight. Some people have this as a con. Believe me, its a pro. Your eyes wont suffer from reading from this device. And you can purchase a carrying case with a light attached to it for night reading.
Portable, light and straight to the point.
The actual cons are
Sonys book site wont allow the sharing of books.
Sonys book site is quite expensive.

I had been looking to buy an ebook reader for quite a while and finally decided on the Sony at Vanns. The price was very good and I was even more pleased when I recieved the reader. I have always loved to read, but didnt have time to go to the library and didnt have the space to store books if I bought them. This solves both of those problems. My state library offers ebooks to borrow and the device takes the space of one book. The available storage on the device means that I can have quite a selection available to me without having to find a place to put the books. I am very pleased with this purchase!

I received the Sony Reader Pocket Edition as a gift... thanks Dad! I am an avid reader who generally plows through at least two books a week, and I was not sure how the digital reading experience would compare to physical paper books. I was pleased to find that I enjoyed using the Sony Reader. The screen has a very paper-like look with no distracting glare, and the device itself is lightweight enough to hold up for long periods of time.
Setup was very simple, as was learning how to use it. The Reader Pocket Edition holds a charge through several days of regular reading with no trouble. I am looking forward to bringing it with me on vacation in a couple of weeks, instead of packing four or five books in my luggage as I usually do.

What convinced me to buy this item was the wonderful reviews it received from several specialty magazines. Specially about the long lasting power supply from its battery. I am extremely please with the fact that weeks go by before a charge is needed! Besides reading is a pleasure given the extreme resolution of the screen which makes reading fun again even for people like me who use pretty strong corrective lenses.
I was also very please by the vendor who supplied the item as it arrived in a very timely manner and just as described .

The good news is the product is exactly as advertised. And I suppose thats the bad news as well. This is a bare bones version of the robust Sony products. Not a bad thing, its what my wife was looking for in a reader. Downloading from the store as well as our local library is a breeze, the screen is eminently readable, and the controls are easy to use. The only quibble I have is that there is no built in dictionary to use for checking the meaning of words. On balance, were very happy with the product.

Also this device supports the free ePub format which Kindle doesnt, thats the main reason I purchased this and it was definitely the right move.

It is smaller than most of the readers and because of that I do flip the pages a little more but I dont mind and prefer that to have something bigger it is like having a paper back book in my hand and any bigger would annoy me.

This Sony pocket reader is the best e-reader Ive owned so far. While the color is described as pink, it is more of a dark ruby-pink, very attractive color - a guy would not be weirded out by carrying one of these around. It does not have a lot of bells and whistles on it, but the best thing about it is...it just works. Theres no fooling around, plug it in, charge it up, download your books and your are ready to go. The screen clarity is much better than previous gen Sony e-readers, and the battery seems to last a bit longer. It lasts up to about 7-10 days with everyday reading. You will want to charge it fully if you havent used it in a week or so. You can read in landscape or regular. Buttons are quick to respond, you can bookmark pages, jump back and forth within a book or between books. The size is perfect for female, smaller hands, but doesnt get lost in your boyfriends big paws either. And, it is not cutting board size, or ugly like some other e-readers out there. No, it doesnt have a touch screen or wireless downloads or a pointless mini color screen, but I dont find that I miss those things. They are readily available to buy, the selection of books you will be able to buy for this reader is expanding and you can borrow e-books for downloading from your public library. The reader software has improved a lot, is faster and makes it easy to find your books, whether you are looking for them on your computer or e-reader. Definitely worth a look and worth its price

I received the Sony Reader for Christmas and some coworkers received the Kindle and the Sony Reader Touch. We all compared each others readers and found that this one is the best! The touch screen on the Sony Touch is glossy and therefore gives a glare, and the Kindle was bigger so not as easy to store in a purse. Also, the fact that you have to buy every book for the Kindle can get costly. I have been using it for two months and have yet to buy a book. I borrow books from the public library or load classics for free from Google Books. The only thing I need to get for it is the light, so I can read it when the lighting is low around me like when I am sitting at soccer practice at night!

Previously I used a laptop to read my e-books, but this was less than optimal for several reasons
1 laptops have a poor battery life
2 laptops are bulky
3 laptops screens are illegible in direct sunlight
I chose the Sony Reader over its competitors mainly due to the compact size and reasonable price, and have been using it for a little over two months. Here are my impressions
The Good
1 Excellent display very clear, legible, and very readable outside.
2 Excellent battery life unlike common electronic devices, lasts for weeks instead of hours.
3 Very compact size
4 Can be synced with Linux, Mac, or Windows PCs
The Bad
1 The unit does not come with a charger, only a USB cable. Furthermore, Sony deliberately crippled it to make it impossible to use a standard mini-USB charger. They would prefer to make the user buy a separate Sony charger for $30.
2 The internal battery is not removable once it dies, thats it.
3 No expansion slots for flash memory.
4 Very slow screen refresh, but this may be an inherent limitation of e-ink displays.
In summary, Sony chose to deliberately cripple what could have been an excellent product. I am sufficiently annoyed that I will never buy a Sony product again.

I just returned from dinner at Maxs Cafe, where the lighting is fairly low. I was accompanied by my sons Sony Reader, which was easy to read, flipped pages quickly, and is light enough to hold comfortably without resting against something, which is typical when I read a real book. The download process is relatively painless and very quick. We are able to load purchased books and free library books, which you cant do with a Kindle. No wireless, but again, fairly painless download.
This is my first business trip without a book to hold in my hand. I appreciate very much the ability to take a lot of reading material with me without the added weight of additional backup books.
