Samsung's new UN46B8500 LCD features LED lighting with local dimming. This is a huge improvement over standard LCD and plasma televisions, which use fluorescent or halogen-based backlighting technology. Innovate LED local dimming technology selectively turns blocks of LEDs off to render perfectly true blacks while others are left on to produce more light. The deeper the black level on a television, the more realistic and vibrant the picture will be. As compared to edge-lit LED TV's, local dimming is an even more precise way to generate the appropriate colors and black levels throughout the entire TV, so the picture is more uniform. Local dimming also eliminates distracting fluctuations in color that you might see with other technology. A more consistent picture is easier to watch. Playing the numbers game — Auto Motion Plus 240Hz™

The Samsung LED 8500 series is fully equipped with the newest video technology to make your viewing experience near perfect. The biggest news in TVs this year is 240Hz processing. Proven to be one of the most effective and sophisticated anti-blur tools, you're in for a treat. The system analyzes the motion of specific on-screen objects as well as overall movement in each scene, adjusting the amount of enhancement to create smooth, sharp pictures. For 60Hz (60i) video signals, Auto Motion Plus 240Hz adds three newly created frames that are inserted between the original 60 frames. That totals out to 240 frames per second (60 x 4) or quadruple the frame rate over 60Hz. The benefits are clearer, sharper images in fast action sports and video games.
