Big news
Nintendo captured the hearts of people of all ages when they released the DS. Then with the release of the DSi, they raised the bar further by adding features like a camera and web browsing. Now, they've upped the ante again. The DSi XL features two 4.2" ultra-bright LCD screens, both with wide viewing angles. At 93% larger than the DS Lite, DSi XL is truly a treat for the eyes. It's still got all the fun features of the "normal-sized" DSi, but it looks better than ever, and the XL version even includes a couple extra programs pre-installed. And now in addition to the standard stylus, you get a pen-sized stylus for additional ease in using the touchscreen. Oh, and before you get to worrying about how much of a bother it will be to pack the thing around, think about this: the XL version weighs less than four ounces more than the the last version.
Photo op
It's fairly standard for mobile devices today to have a camera. But the photo capabilities of the DSi XL are anything but standard. For starters, standard handhelds have a camera; this DSi has two. One is conveniently located on the front of the device so you can use the viewscreen to operate it like a standard camera, or camera phone. The other is neatly hidden on the product's hinge so that when you have your portable plaything open you can perfectly capture self-portraits. But the differences don't end there. With most pocket-sized cameras, you can take a picture. If you want to do any creative editing at all, get ready to transport your pic to a computer and use expensive software to make simple changes to your photos. The DSi XL, on the other hand, has built-in photo effects so you can make all sort of fun changes to your photos. With additional software, you can even load pictures from your computer onto a separate SD card, then edit them on your DS! But the fun doesn't stop there — once you're happy with your work, you can make photo albums, tag them with stickers, choose your favorite, view slideshows, share photos and frames with your buddy across the room (using Wi-Fi), keep a record of what days your pictures were taken on, or even share them on Facebook. It's safe to say that this is no standard mobile camera.
Listen up
The DSi XL doesn't just appeal to the eyes, though. In addition to the better picture from the larger screens, the sound has been improved on the new models. But the audio capabilities of the XL aren't limited to game soundtracks, not by a long shot. For starters, there's a built-in microphone and — you guessed it — plenty of audio effects for you to mess around with. Of course, we doubt the only thing you listen to is your own voice. With some extra software, you can convert the MP3 files on your computer to AAC files. From there, you can load them onto an additional SD card, pop the card in your DS, and start creating your own mixes of your favorite tracks. Adjust the tempo, pitch, sound effects, instrumentation, and much more. Or, use your DS as a handy device for listening to your favorite tunes on the go.
The world is waiting
While it might be tempting to play with the photo and audio functions of the DSi XL all day, there's a whole other world out there. It's called the world wide web, and with the built-in Wi-Fi of the DSi XL, it's all just a few taps away. Of course, browsing the net isn't the only worthwhile use of the web connection. It's also great for gaming, sharing your custom picture creations, and downloading new games and apps from the DSiWare service. Like we said — there's a whole other world out there — so what are you waiting for?
