Purchased Marantz CD5004 for our bed room system. Excellent player love the simplicity
and looks. Sound is warm and and detailed. Using an older model Marantz receiver with Energy FPS speakers, a little over kill for a bedroom system but sounds killer. Have been a Denon fan for many years but slowly replacing all my gear to Marantz. A little more expensive but worth it. You get what you pay for.

Imagine sitting in the center of a high quality concert venue about the 4th or 5th row from the front. Before you on center stage is a vocalist, flanked at even intervals on either side by a 5 piece band. The drums are centered behind the vocalist. You hear every nuance of the singer’s voice as well as the natural voice of each instrument. The stage is wide and the instruments well defined. Thats the sound youll get from the Marantz CD5004. For me, this unit replaced a long-beloved Denon—DCD-910. In side-by-side comparisons, this Marantz blows the Denon away. The Marantz sound stage is much wider the instruments stand individually on that stage and sound very natural, where the Denons stage was much narrower and, while sounding good, were much more smashed together. The Marantz build quality is substantive and well thought out. I also appreciate the fact that the unit plays MP3 files. Along with the usual analog outs, I like the digital audio output capability of this unit. While I dont typically use them, it is rare to find a pitch control included with a player of this nature. The remote is logically arranged. Overall, this unit boasts a nice feature mix and fantastic sound from a respected brand. I recommend it.

I should preface this by saying that I bought the CD5004 exclusively for use with high-end headphones Audio Technica ATH-AD900s, to be exact. I have never used it with speakers.
My choice was strongly influenced by reviews stressing the sound quality and, especially, the quality of the headphone amp. I am not at all disappointed in either regard. The ATs are capable of truly amazing sound when fed by the right source, and there is no doubt that the Marantz is the right source.
Even recordings I have heard thousands of times Dark Side of the Moon, for example, reveal lushness and detail I would never have expected.
The unit is built like a tank, and looks great besides.
Finally, I really like the setting that turns off the display while listening, as I enjoy listening in a dark room.
The sound is a huge improvement over my DVD playerYamaha receiver combination, my Sony MP3 Walkman, and even my Tascam professional CD player, all of which are pretty decent in their own right.
Highly, highly recommended and a steal at the price.

This replaces a beloved Marantz CD63 MkII. It s much more neutral in sound and is noticeably quieter. It does not cast a pall of lifelessness over everything, as did the NAD C-515BEE I tried to replace my 63 with.
I was tempted to write -- It plays CDs and MP3s magnificently -- and call it a day. But you want more, Im sure.
The minimalist buttons on the faceplate have teeny labels that are hard to read. The remote is easier to use ... if you remember where you put it. There is a separate button for each function programming, pitch control, etc. This is good.
Did I mention that I miss the large buttons on my old CD63?
The display is perfectly adequate, but I wish it were larger, as I am an old fart. And I wish it would let me adjust the display brightness like my old CD63 would. Here you only get on or off. Worse, when you choose AUDIO EX2 for better quality sound ... the display turns off. This is pointlessly annoying.
I am not enamored of the half-round half-square design, but it is not ugly or dated. And who looks at a CD player when Martha Argerich is playing Prokofiev?
As a musician I really appreciate the pitch control and A-B REPEAT. Bravo!
For reasons I do not understand, it will play MP3s and WMA files, but not WAV files. If you have WAV files this is annoying. And I have WAV files.
Finally, the manual is bulky, oddly shaped, hard to store, and full of languages I do not speak. The text is rather small, too. Then again, the prose is clear and written in the English that we English-speakers read and understand.

The Marantz has me digging deep into my cd collection, and actually buying the format again!
I love music -- when its my time to leave this world not too soon I hope, itll be to the wonderful accompaniment of The Sound of Philadelphia played on my Marantz cd5004.
Great nuanced reproduction. Quiet operation. Recommended for its perfomance as well as its price.
The 3-year warranty is also unheard of in audio gear.
Thank you, Vanns.

First off, I have to establish that while I am no audiophile, I can tell when a sound system generally sounds good and when one sounds bad. I really dont like to hear bad ones! Ill listen to just about anything musical at least once and I will try to relate to the music I have pretty eclectic tastes in music. I tend to like my sound systems on the bright side, and bass is fine with me as long as it isnt boomy. I think the people who know about this stuff call it tight. See there, I learned from reading all those reviews. Im not into blasting out my neighbors, either. At age 50 something howdidthathappen? I want to be able to hear for the duration! I dont own earphones as I find them physically uncomfortable. So take all that into consideration as you read the following.
Ive had an old single-play cd player for well over 20 years , and Ive always assumed that the sound coming from these things was all about the same, since they are all digital. I thought audio sound quality came from the quality of the actual recording, the receiver quality, and the quality of the speakers. Yamaha receiver and Klipsch speakers...love em! I was content with the old player. I wanted another sound system for another area of my house so I started shopping around for a single-disc player. It turns out that they are fairly rare Rip Van Winkle here was in total shock about that.
I read lots of the online reviews about CD players, and the Marantz read like it would be reliable, sturdy and sound great. A lot of the reviews about these newer machines make them sound like they are real junk! Well, the Marantz audio was such an improvement over the old machine that I ended up ordering another player to replace the ancient one that still works. The new Marantz machine has bells and whistles if you want to fool with them, but it works very simply. Im hoping that it will be reliable, but only time will tell about that. It they feels like it ought to sit here and spin away for 20 years like my old one did, only with much improved sound.
I ordered both machines from Vanns and as a result Ive gotten hooked on digging around on their website in the clearance section. Im having a lot of fun with that. I seriously considered getting an open-box sacd player for a great deal from the clearance section instead of the second Marantz, but I decided to stick with what works. So far, I have no regrets about that decision.

I agree with the previous reviews here. Ive had mine for several months now, and Im quite happy with its performance and features. Especially for what is an entry level player.
I use both the internal dac, and the toslink out to a Peachtree audio Dacit.
They have different personalities that favor different types of music. Its the best of two worlds for my applications.
The operation is simple, solid, and quiet. The display is soft on my eyes and easy to read.
The owners manual is detailed, and written in an understandable manner.
I added better quality interconnects, and nothing more.
I would definitely buy the 5004 again!

The first thing that I noticed is the first class look of this item. Its a great looking piece. And that is just the begining. I had it hooked up in ten minutes and then took a few minutes to look through the manual. I have a fairly high end system set up just for 2-channel music so I turned off the digital circuits very easy to do by the way and went through a few CDs. The clarity is amazing. The highs are high and the definition of the bass is good also. The controls are plain and simple to use. The quality is just amazing for the price. Would highly reccomend.

I purchased this CD player after reading a number of reviews in audiophile magazines. Obviously the quality of the sound can’t be compared with that of a SACD player, but for about a quarter the price the sound quality is quite good. Setup was easy, and the controls are well laid out. I wish Marantz made a version of this unit that played more than a single CD, but overall it’s hard to beat this unit without spending considerably more.

I bought this Marantz 5004CD Player,my 1st highend cd player, with only the product details and customer reviews to go by. I went to several sites to get all the other reviews and prices before I decided to buy from Vanns and am very HAPPY with my decision. I was satisfied when I talked to and ordered from Joshua. Your price on sale was the final clincher. Now the reason I wanted to get a CD only player is the less than satisfying cd sound from my Blu-ray and HD DVD players. The are great for movies, but have left me wanting for musical details, as something was always missing. I am running the Marantz through my Carver receiver, with the wonderful Magnetic-field amplifier. that has a very open sound, into Sansui SPL 800 speakers,a great dual woofer and horn tweeter, limited edition speakers from 1979, using the analog connections and all I can say is WOW, as the deep solid bass, great clear vocals and crystal highs are all I could want. I am very impressed with the EX2 for analog output, along with the solid weight, feel and look of this unit. I can now listen at high volume levels with no distorsion. No need to want vinyl anymore as this unit really makes cds sound better. I have not tried the digital outputs yet as the Cirrus Logic CS4392 DAC in the player is as good as advertised. I listen a wide variety of music from jazz, classic rock, classical, country, disco and anything that stirs my soul and cannot say enough about this unit, as it sounds so good at everything I through at it. Blood Sweat & Tears, Herb Alpert, Chuck Mangione, the re-mastered Beatles, Billy Joel, Enrique Iglesias, and all sound Just GREAT! Yes 2 speakers can sound very good with this HIGHEND player. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Thankyou,Don.

I was looking for a cd player that was flexible enough to play mp3s, cd- r and have a high quality sound processor and still have a reasonable price. I weighed the options by reading other more professional reviews. I was deciding between this Marantz, NAD, Denon and Teac. I choose the Marantz and Vanns sold it at very competitive price with fast shipping. I believe I made the best choice. Highs and midrange certainly project a warmer timbre with much less ear fatigue! I bought this unit to replace a decent Harman Kardon CD player and use with a Marantz integrated amp. I play a range of music, classical, rock, blues, and jazz. The music is more detailed than what I was getting from my old unit - definitely an improvement in performance and at a very reasonable price. The unit has a nice clean front, and while the controls are small and a little difficult to read they are quickly learned. I consider this unit to be an excellent value and would definitely purchase again.

For years Ive been listening to my cds on a sony 5 disc changer which finally died. So when researching for a new cd player I came across the Marantz 5004. Now Ive been familiar with the name Marantz from back in the seventies when they produced top quality stereo receivers, but since seemed to have dropped off the radar. In my research I came to find that in the early days of cd technology Marantz developed some quality high end cd players. The price on this cd player was at top of my budget but I didnt want a cheap piece of equipment so I went ahead and made the purchase.I am completely satisfied with this product and it really compliments my stereo system ,Luxman R1120 reciever, Luxman EQ,Quadraflex turntable,Infinity Q5 & ESS AMT1 speakers. I would highly reccomend this cd player to anyone with an ear for music!
