Whether stereo or surround . . . Concert performance
There are all sorts of reasons why you might be looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers. One, you might be looking to add a front- or rear-channel pair to a surround sound system you're assembling for your living room or home theater area. Two, maybe you're looking to for a stereo pair to bring full, dynamic sound out of a CD player or turntable in a home office or sitting room. Whatever the case, you're in need of a high-performance bookshelf speaker pair that will deliver serious audio reproduction without hogging space in your living room or gouging your pocket book. You're in need of the C 401 pair from Jamo. Each two-way speaker's combination of a 4.0" woofer and 1.0" tweeter serves up clear, yet robust, sound highlighted by crisp high-frequencies and full mid-range sound. And that's just the beginning. Each speaker also offers something, well, innovative . . . DTT. Decoupled Tweeter Technology mounts the tweeter driver independent of each C 401's speaker cabinet, reducing vibration transmission from the front baffle to the tweeter by more than 20dB. The result is an uncommonly detailed and realistic reproduction of high-frequency audio. No wonder the C 401 is part of Jamo's Concert series.
Room to breathe
Every aspect of a speaker's design — from driver materials to crossover circuitry — plays a critical role in the speaker's ultimate level of performance. One component that often goes overlooked, and yet makes a significant contribution to a speaker's audio reproduction, is the cabinet in which the driver is housed. Chances are, you're aware that it's the movement of air at the front of a speaker's driver that realizes the reproduction of sound. However, you might not have considered the role played by the air moving at driver's rear . . . inside the cabinet. Most speaker enclosures are "closed", meaning that they are completely sealed off. As you might imagine, closed systems often restrict a driver's movement — reducing efficiency and the output range — and congest moving air within the cabinet, ultimately causing unwanted resonance. Ensuring a listening experience free of distortion and enhanced by improved efficiency and dynamic range, each C 401 sports a bass-reflex enclosure. Also known as ported enclosures, bass-reflex cabinets feature openings, or ports, in the cabinet that facilitate the movement of air behind a speaker driver. With room to breathe, each C 401's 4.0" woofer pumps out clear, full sound free of resonance and marked by extended bass-audio performance.

I looked into buying Jamo speakers in the past but went with Definitive Technologies and swore I would never buy another brand. Along came the c401 on sale so I decided to check them out. Wonderful! I was looking for a stereo set for my bedroom and WOW! I listen to alot of metal and look for tight bass. Paired with my Onkyo THX receiver, I couldnt ask for more. Even with TV, especially football games, they are really pleasant to listen to. I will surely Buy Jamo speakers again. Thanks Vanns.

I will recommend it for a small bedroom or so not for a home theatre. But keeping price in mind they are doing OK.

The highlight of these speakers is the tweeter. It is very clean and detailed. The woofers do an admirable job for 4 inches, with bass presence that is excellent for their size. The downside is that the mid-range is somewhat lacking. I would highly recommend these speakers to individuals whose top consideration is speaker size. The cabinets are very small, and produce sound that belies their size. I have many different speakers - Im a bit of a speaker junky - So I compared the C401 to 6 other 2 way speakers models I have - from Polk, Infinity, Klipsch, Paradigm. They came in last place. So, why do I recommend them? They represent a solid sizeprice combination I paid $xx at Vanns. However, I strongly disagree with those who state the C401 a great value at full retail At that price you have many speaker options that I feel would be superior, especially in the current economic environment - read discounts. One caveat Keep in mind that these speakers are 6 Ohms, and below average in efficiency. You dont need massive power to drive them - theyll only sustain 80 Watts continous - but they will open up more when mated with a good high current amp. In summary, Id rank them average for music, due to mid-range, and a solid choice for home theater, if speaker size is a top consideration - a sub-woofer would be an excellent addition in this case.

I received the most impressive assistance from your customer service department in selecting which speakers would best suit my needs. I had purchased a new flat screen TV from Vanns, and was looking for some good speakers for my great room, to use with the TV, DVD and Stereo System. These bookshelf sized speakers pack one heck of a sound for their size! Im completely satisfied with the sound quality, and the volume is more than enough for my living room. As stated in other reviews I did some research, they dont have a tinny or out of balance sound ie. bass, treble, midranges, and have a quite lovely and realistic, warm tone. The wooden boxes are lovely, and I couldnt be more pleased, both with Vanns as a company who offers EXCELLENT customer service, and the product itself. And, the PRICE??? Incredible~

Ive been in the broadcast industry for 43 years and have listened to many speakers during this time. My last speakers were the JBL- L100 studio monitors that have been in my living room since their release.
After purchasing an HDTV, why wife said the JBLs have to go because they are too big and taking up too much room in our living room. I had to compromise sigh.
When she surprised me with an Onkyo HT-S330 system as a Fathers day present, I knew the supplied speakers wouldnt even come close to the JBLs. They had a plastic sound that I couldnt live with.
I looked online and listened to many speakers in various stores and settled on the Jamo C401s after looking at the Vanns reviews. I discovered that Jamo is part of the Klipsch group that every audiophile is familiar with. I couldnt be happier with the quality of these little boxes. The look, sound, and construction are amazing at this price.
Now Im happy again and plan on ordering more C401s for surround and the Jamo C400CEN center channel speaker.

Got C401 to replace desktop 2.1 PC speakers this is day and night. They are small enough to fit on the desk and have nice sound. I do like clear midrange and seemingly omnidirectional highs unlike cheap PC speakers which are rather directional. Bass is not as strong - though that is expected from rather small speakers. Case has good finish and seems to be very strong good for dumping vibrations. According to my calculations bass reflex port is tuned for ~70Hz I think that is a little low and might create some drop at 80-90Hz. Though its been ~15 years since I made speakers and things have changed. Terminals seem to be worthy of $400 speakers and are very nice for $70. BTW, in case you wondering as I was theres no mounting hardware at the bottom, so no bolting these to speaker stands.

These are great book shelf speakers, guitar and string instruments are exquisitely crisp and mid range is more than adequate. The only thing you should know is that this is 6 ohms and do require a more powerful receiver. I tried this with an old school stereo amp 325 marantz and the sound was barely audible for my taste, if you try to crank it up with a low powered amp sound will be distorted. Switched it to Harman Kardon HK3480 and it made a world of difference.

Being a professional audio engineer, I wasnt expecting much from a passive pair of speakers costing less than $100. But the component quality is very high the individual woofer and tweeter appear to be very high quality, and the enclosure and crossover look to be of a good standard, too.
Pro engineers tend to use active monitors speakers that have the amplification built in and so expect a high degree of accuracy for monitoring applications. What impressed me with the C401s was even when connected to a low-cost amplifier they sounded quite rich, with a nice smooth midrange reproduction and crisp highs.
Of course, you cannot expect deep bass reproduction from these, but a small subwoofer, teamed with these, would be ideal Jamo makes budget-conscious ones such as the SUB550, available from Vanns at httpbit.lySUB550 which would work well.
Lastly, the finish quality is high, and the speakers look very good even with their grille covers removed preferred for better audio performance.

Coupling them to my computer via a 2 x 40 watt stereo amplifier made listening to music on YouTube a joy. Although only 6 x 9 x 8 inch deep, even organ music sounds real and voices are uncolored.
At 6 ohm impedance they are easy to drive and are sensitive enough to go loud with smaller amps than the one I had available. I really must get a Hi Fi sound card to do them justice. They have been a wonderful purchase. Grab a pair while the offer lasts, they are just too good to pass up.

Okay , words like solid, excellent fit and finish come immediately to mind. . These speakers strike me as solid, with quality construction. When I bought them they were to be a gift. That fell through but these little boogers sound so good that I am going to keep them and use them in a 7.2 setup within the next six months. They are sweet, with uncommon precision on the tweeter sound. Voices are a wee bit subdued but mid range as with any new speaker takes some getting used to. They have good depth and a wide soundstage. I tested them by pairing them up with a yamaha yst sw216, they are very close in response. They sound great, with excellent blending between the sub and the satellites themselves. You will need power to drive them as they are 88db and it shows. but with the proper amplification they sound superb. Nothing wrong here and dont let the price drive you away . This is caviar at bean dip prices. BUY THESE SPEAKERS, FOOL!

First time purchase of Jamo speakers and I am very pleased. The apple cabinets give these speakers a bold look. The build quality of these speakers are excellent and they are quite heavy for such a small footprint.
The depth allows for easy placement on smaller bookshelves. The sound is excellent for a smaller 4 cone. It definitely lacks in lower mid-range and bass, but I use a sub to pick up the lack in bass. Highs are crisp but not piercing like horn drivers.
These Jamo speakers are an excellent value & performance when on sale.
Ultimately I think I will upgrade to some PSB bookshelves with a bigger 6.5 inch driver because I need a bit more mid-range. But you still cannot go wrong with these Jamos. They are great for smaller rooms!

What can I say second round of Jamo and big thanks to Vanns for being instrumental in a speedy delivery, Now these little pistols, zip, bang, boom, throw at them what you will but the sound is ever so pleasing, bit of advice, break them in 16 hours and they shine, the speakers softens up and the treble and mids get more clear as well youll get more of the clear hights, and they are getting beter and better each day I play them, Im quite amazed at the sound coming form these speakers, and while sound is subjective, I consider myself an audiophile, trust me I could sit for days doing A B tests between speakers, and good for you because I did just that with my DCM Time Windows 1a, now these are not a Hall of Fame speaker as my beloved DCM Time Windows but even in comparison to the ever so famous Time Windows they are quite good, however where the TImewindows shine is in the holographic imaging and few other apects of clarity, but as one previous reveiver stated they do image quite well and verging on excellence, BTW the usual motto is you get what you pay for, well guess what, you get more than your bargained for literally in these beauties, a little add on would be a good sub which will make them even better and at that point you can get a tower like sound from these small gems, however these have plenty of bass with the ports and are adequate, but the sub makes them come alive, they have quite handsome cabinets which are solidly constructed with decent weight to boot. Get them while they are available because this a great speaker, and for the price I fall over backwards everytime I listen. Overall Im quite pleased, give them a go and youll soon be singing Jamo be there, cheers!

These are very pretty speakers which seem solidly constructed. I would not use them without a separate woofer subwoofer but their midrange and treble seem to be very good. An earlier reviewer compared them to the AR2ax since my AR2s are still in good shape I compared and the AR2axthese make a pretty good combination, but they two really shouldnt be used in the same sentence otherwise.

I have been trying to find a pair of stereo speakers for my flat screen TV in the last two years. I do not watch TV at high volume so I want something sounds good at low volume in particular during quiet nights. Many high-end speakers do not shine until they are driven at a volume beyond my ears tolerance.
The all-in-one home theater packages in the market with a DVD player all have cheap speakers for their price, plus I do not need a five-speaker surround configuration. After many disappointment I eventually decided to build my own system. I got a Yamaha RX-V365 as the receiver. Then I tried different speakers from the high-end B&W 685, 686, and CM1, to the mid-end Paradigm Atom V6, to my 15-year old Aiwa NSX-V70 speakers. At the sound volume I watch TV -27db to -10db, they all sound very alike but with a huge price difference. At one time I even tried to get a pair of Energy RC-10. All these speakers have woofers of 5 or larger, I do not like the slightly bass-colored vocal from them. Finally I decided to try the Jamo C401 after talking to a sales person at Vanns.com.
The initial impression of the Jamo C401 speakers was that the mid range was not bright enough to my taste, and the overall sound was not as fuller when compared to the other aforementioned speakers with a 5 or larger woofers. Then last night I tried to configure the Yamaha receiver with two speaker settings, 8db treble, and set the front speakers to Large, suddenly I can hear people breathe in the TV show with fuller and sweet sound of great clarity coming out of these speakers. No listening fatigue has been encountered.
In summary, with the sound and build quality for the price, you can not go wrong with them. Did I mention they also look great with the grille off ?

....but only if you have a niche for them. They are too small for mains unless you have a decent sub-woofer to accompany them or your room is small 250 SQft. They are not really a bookshelf speaker either. These speakers need some breathing room around the sides and back of them to sound their best. And speaking of sounding their best, youll need a decent amp to drive these, as they are inefficient and low impedance to boot. Now the good...construction is first rate, midrange and treble are smooth and non fatiguing. Bass is good, there is only so much a 4 inch driver can do, but whats there is controlled. Imaging is excellent, probably its greatest strength.

Once upon a time my quest for sound started as a teenager.
My first set of speakers was a fully closed acoustic suspension pair, around 1982, 3 way with 10 inch ? woofer, and a silk dome tweeter, made by Quadral. Perfect! I still regret having sold them to this day!
I always loathed bass reflex designs at the time, because of some funny phase shift and resonance effects that actually plugged my ears and really hurt and gave me a headache. Meaning I am, due to physical design of my over sensitive body, one of those audiophile cranks who is picky!
Nowadays, with this outright insane emphasis on bloated bass from often poorly designed ported systems and a thoroughly missing selection of acoustic suspension speakers, a good set of speakers, especially for a smaller room is tough to find in mass market stores!
Enter this pair of Jamo c401 speakers!
They do everything right!
Nice, flat response, all the instruments and voices are present, they draw a nice perspective view of a stage, and there is absolutely no funny resonance effects that hurts my ears!
For those who are crazy for bass they have enough of it, without being boomy though!
The tweeters open a lot of detail and cymbals and triangles are well audible, but never edgy, never hissy, and never metallic - just plain neat all around!
The bottom and midrange are well defined and, while not having annoying hardness, are punchy and crisp enough for some fun with Hard Rock and Jazz.
For classic and voice I still prefer a single driver design using 3inch Tang Band wide range drivers in my own custom modified cabinets, but I actually am starting to catch myself forgetting to switch to them, because these Jamo c401 speakers are plain that good - and they do something that is most important - they make you forget you are listening to some system and let you just listen to the music! They simply are!
For a VERY low priced pair of speakers, especially bought through a sales channel at only about a quarter of suggested retail price, these are EXCELLENT and certainly on par with the famed Epos ELS-3 no longer made - so GET these Jamos while they are around!
Comparisons
Epos ELS 3 - they are both quite similar - as the ELS 3 is gone, I have to work from memory from a friends hifi store here, but I suspect the Jamo delivers a bit more and deeper bass, while mid and upper end are very much similar.
Compare to currently similar priced to this insane super sale on the Jamo c401 Sony SS1000 compacts, and the Sonys lose big time - had a pair, dumped them. Boomy bass, odd mushiness in some ranges - ok if you are hurting for a pair on a no money budget, but for a few dollars more the Jamo c401 will be much easier listening.
Wharfedale Diamond 7.2 Anniversary Edition, which I like a LOT - the Jamo is better at handling a bigger variety of rooms and behave better with a larger range of amps, from 5 Wchannel vintage and tube gear to a 70 Wchannel Marantz 4270. The Wharfedales had trouble with my smaller vintage amps, the Jamos are very tolerant and deliver the goods in a most well behaved manner - EXCELLENT!
You will have to spend a LOT more money to get better.
I routinely listen to some 3000 dollarair speakers at a friends store, and they are not often that impressive for their high cost!
Build is nice, the wood cover looks nice, sound is excellent.
You cannot go wrong - and my pair is not even fully broken in, but sounded sweet straight of the box - a rare feat! After 100 hours or so, I am really happy I got them!

These are very easy speakers to live with. They have accurate, clean sound that has a little warmth, but no pronounced attenuation to the treble or bass. I think theyre a fairly accurate sounding speaker and considering their size, the bass response is excellent, even provides a little kick drum punch you wouldnt expect from this size speaker, but not boomy at all. Really good deal for someone looking for small bookshelf speakers. In a bedroom or den sized room, sub would not be necessary. Some speakers are a little hot in the treble or bass heavy, but these have nice balance. I think these are a speaker you could listen to for a long time without tiring of them. Theyre pretty heavy for their size and the build quality is nice.

Even though they are rated down to only 70 Hz, I swear that I could hear bass of much lower frequency. Maybe like 47 - 50 Hz. Right out of the box, these sounded very nice. I didnt expect them to sound this good out of the box but they did! In my room 14 x 14 x 10 and for their small size, bass was quite unexpectedly tight and full for music. I could not believe a 4 woofer could produce this much bass. However, for movies you may need a sub. The tweeters are the best part of these C401s. Clean and smooth.
I just dont know with mere $80 you could get anything this nice in this world! Even at $400 MSRP, they are still worth it.
Im confident that you will love these little speakers.

First I want to say how happy I was with the speed which Vanns shipped my product and getting me the tracking number in under 48 hours from my purchase through Amazon. I used these speakers to replace my Infiniti bookshelf speakers since they were blown. They still worked but there would be no bass. Im not an audio expert and I was going to buy a pair of Sony speakers. I then listened to a pair of Polk Audio bookshelf speakers next to the Sony and refused to ever buy a pair of Sony speakers even though they were half the price of the Polk speakers. Then I listened to another pair of Polk Audio speakers that were 4x the price of the Sony. These Tsi100 speakers sounded better than the Bose and Definitive Technology speakers also so I was hooked on those. But I didnt want to pay full price and started looking around on the net. Thats when I found these speakers. They are smaller than the Tsi 100. I truly cannot compare the sounds against each other, but I am very satisfied with these speakers. Construction wise they are better built than both my Infiniti and the Tsi 100 speakers. They also sound very good. These are very good speakers for the price.

I needed to find smallish main speakers for my 5.1 home theater system, in order to attain a sufficiently high WAF -wife acceptance factor-, and my research led me to these little Jamos.
I had never heard of the brand before, but a little Google time showed that they were well thought of, and are especially well-known in Europe. Also, Jamo also had intriguing speakers for the center and rear channels, so I took the plunge and bought them.
With only 4-inch drivers you cant really expect big-cabinet performance, but with a subwoofer in the mix these little guys are outstanding performers. I have them mounted on the wall, on aim-able mounts, so I have a fairly large sweet spot in the listening room.
I have now been listening to these speakers for about 3 weeks. My very first impression was that they lacked punch at normal volume, but after listening to them for a while I can also say that they are not at all fatiguing, I have listened to them for hours on end now and I am liking them more and more every day. Of course, there are 4 other speakers playing at the same time -center channel, rear surround pair, & subwoofer-, so it is really the whole system that shines. I suspect that as stand-alone speakers they would be at their best in a bedroom or a den.
One disappointment, there are no factory-installed threaded inserts for mounting these speakers, only a couple of metal V-tabs on the back that can be wall-hung on a couple of screws or nails. I removed the binding post plate on the back, carefully drilled holes, and installed 14-20 T-nuts from the inside of the cabinets so I could bolt the speakers to an articulating mount, and now I can aim them in any direction I want.
The quality is outstanding they are HEAVY for their size, the cherry finish will blend nicely with a variety of environments, and the warranty is generous.
