It’s a nice printer. A liitle slow warming up and bigger than I envisioned. I like the wireless feature and the fact that it only uses 2 print cartridges as opposed to 4 or 5 like some color printers. Print quality on paper is very good.

The Canon Pixma MG6120 is a remarkable printer. I purchased this printer a few weeks ago and I couldnt be happier. I was really surprised on how easy it was to set up. It linked up with my wireless network on the first try. The printer is fast and is of excellent quality. Ive used the printer to print MS word documents, photos, and scan in documents. I really like the way the printer lights up only the keys that relate to the function that you are performing, i.e scanning, copying, or printing. If youre looking for a quality printer at an afordable price then you cant go wrong with the Canon Pixma MG6120.

The PIXMA MP495 is a fine printer with all-in-one features and WiFi capabilities. The driver and software installation, however, did not go so smoothly Windows 7 x64. I cant imagine a layman going through the difficulty I went through getting WiFi working with this printer. But once its configured, it works quite well.
Document Printing
Funny enough, this is probably the least interesting part of the all-in-one. Theres not much that can be said in this category. The MP495 is a very competent document printer with all the features youd find in any inkjet printer. Paper loads from the back, so its a bit more intuitive which side of the paper will be printed on, but it also means you need more space heightwise.
Photo Printing
As a photo printer, the MP495 is both fast and high quality. I found that the supplied Photo Paper Plus Glossy II sample paper outperformed some HP photo paper I had. And the MP495 outperformed another HP photosmart 385 printer I have in both speed and quality. So I am quite pleased with the performance here as I find this to be one of the major draws of this device. Canon claims about 86 photos from one Color ink cartridge. I have not owned the printer long enough to verify the accuracy of their claim.
Scanning
I dont scan very often, but its a very useful feature to have when you need it. In a scanner I look for speed, image quality and usable software. Im quite pleased with the MP495s scanner capabilities. My test involved a sheet from a notepad that had a light gray watermark-like background. The scanner picked it up no problem. From initialization to scan completion took approx. 20 seconds, which I find adequate. Theres a scan button on the printer, but pressing it doesnt do anything if the printer is hooked up via WiFi.
WiFi
One of the main draws of this printer is its wifi capabilities. But since the printer has no controls on the device itself for configuring the connection to your likely secured WiFi access point, it must be configured through software installed on one of the computers on the network. Configuring the WiFi was a bit tricky. After repeated failed attempts, I figured out that the trick is to plug the USB cable which they call a WiFi configuration cable in at precicely the right point during setup -- during the detection phase. Plugging it in too soon seems to cause it to fail -- and I waited the first few times too. Regardless, this will no doubt be a hurdle for novices trying to configure this printer. I suggest having a competent computer person around while configuring the WiFi connection on this printer. With that being said, not having to have the printer close enough to my computer for the USB cable to reach is fantastic.
Software
The software is not very impressive but adequate. Theres a utility for managing your scans and OCR text conversion and all that good stuff. Canon boasts an automatic scanning feature that automatically detects the type of document being scanned. I tested it out and it seems to work well as far as being convenient. The software however lacks ability to open the file location in Explorer or even open the file using the default application. So thats quite annoying.
Included with the software is MyPrinter utility that allows you to connect to the printer and configure various options. It seems like nothing more than a shortcut to the printer properties utility included with windows. Theres no options for configuring the WiFi connection in this utility. You must use the Setup program to do that -- something I find rather annoying since this is something you should easily be able to access without having to pop in the driver disc or dig up the setup utility.
If you decide to go with the Easy install instead of the custom install, the setup utility will dump some annoying shortcut toolbar application called Menu something or other. I removed it right quick.
Theres also something Canon calls Web Print Ex which allows you to change the layout of web pages to print them out better. I didnt test this software out.
Cost
At around $80, half the cost of this printer is in the ink. The ink for this printer seems to run around $17 for Black and $18 for Color. Canon reveals the following for ink life
Black Ink Tank Life Black 220 pages PG-510, 401 pages optional PG-512¹
Black 2955 photos* PG-510, 7275 photos* optional PG-512²
* Estimated supplemental yield
Colour Ink Tank Life Colour 244 pages CL-511, 349 pages optional CL-513¹
Colour 83 photos CL-511, 122 photos optional CL-513²
Note that I found this info on Canons European site. The actual cartridge models are PG-210 and CL-211.
So even with those numbers, which are probably the upper bound, youre looking at around 19 cents per photo plus cost of paper. While the photo quality is excellent, Ive ordered prints online for around 5 cents per photo. So the ink here is certainly expensive.
Conclusion
Pros
- Wifi
- Quiet and fast scanner
- High quality and fast printing
- Reasonable purchase price
Cons
- Expensive ink
- Clunky software
- Lack of LCD for independent configuration
Rating the device itself on its merits alone, I give it 4 stars. Whether that ink cost is a major deterrent to you is really up to you.

I have had a couple of other brands over the past decade or so and even when you get the latest item, it doesnt seem to live up to the hype. I bought this because of the price and the features, but I had no idea how wonderful this printer truly was until I really started using it. Love the duplex feature and the speedy printing as well as the software which came with it. I use an iMac with Parallels and the software works excellent with both systems. Also, having the two paper slots is great for doing special printing including envelopes.
I have to say I am very impressed by Canon and if this printer lasts for a while, they will have a loyal customer and I will tell my friends and family about how awesome they are!

I am SO happy with my new Selphy ES40. I am an avid scrapbooker and have never been pleased with the quality of the photos that I have printed at home, until I purchased this printer. It is especially helpful when I want to print a few photos for a scrapbook without running out to the drugstore. It has its limitations maximum print size 4 x 6 and I likely wont use it to print large batches of photos, but it is perfect for scrapbooking or printing out photos to share.

I have to say I was very frustrated with the HP all-in-one I owned prior to this one. I had constant jams and had to reinstall it several times when it constantly failed to print, and would never scan.
I have only had this printer for 3 weeks, but have had no problems. Very easy install. Quick response to print prompts, and speedy printing.
As you can tell I am very pleased with this printer!!!

1. Could someone tell the product designers that raised black plastic letters on a black background are not visible to the eye of a human being over age 30?
2. The paper feed is inconveniently located at the rear so I have to stand up from my pc and lean way over to put the paper in, and it has so little tolerance thats its like threading a needle to get the paper properly placed.
3. This printer is a loud whiner. Ask it for one black and white copy, it grumbles loudly for 8 to 10 seconds, prints taking another 10 to 12 seconds, is quiet for 15 to 30 seconds, then complains again for 10 to 12 seconds I timed this with my kitchen timers. It makes this huge production number out of every copy, not just while its warming up for the first one. Same with printing a page print copy quality is fine.
4. And this is a nit Why do I have to push multiple buttons to make one photocopy?
5. The printer this one replaced is an old HP all-in-one, and it still leaves this Canon in the dust.
6. We have not yet asked it to fax or scan. Boy, I cant wait to see how many hoops it makes me jump through to do those things.
7. Executive summary hard to use and noisy.
8. Bah, humbug!

The Canon Mx870 is a good value for the price.
Nice design and easy to set up and use. Very good quality prints and scans. Great features.
I have owned Canon printersOffice multi function machines for the last 15 years. My complaint would be the downsize of the ink cartridges. The MX-870 carts are 30 smaller than the MX-850 carts. This means you run out of ink faster, and buy more ink more often. The set of 5 Canon carts will cost about $60 to replace, generic brands will cost about half that much.
Canon builds into their design a Cannot recognize ink cart. warning with the use of most generic ink carts, which stops your print job.
Canon printers use to have ink tanks for each color and they held several ounces of ink each. The MX-870 ink carts each hold less than one ounce - be prepared to buy much ink, it will run out often.
